Pursuing a career in nutrition is not what I have always wanted to do, to be honest; until very recently I had not even realized how much this field of study intrigues me. Growing up with a Venezuelan and Arabic food culture, I was never taught to be mindful of nourishment. I always viewed the act of eating just as another regular task of my life, like breathing or studying. I used to classify food in two groups: the bad (made up of sugary and fatty produce) and the good. Likewise, I believed that the only way to achieve a healthy physique and a “fitness” lifestyle was to live by a very restrictive diet and perform hours running on a treadmill at the gym. After several years I began to understand the complexity of proper nourishment, and I …show more content…
I will passionately dedicate my career to assist the dietary needs of my patients and provide them with the best nutritional counseling possible. I also hope to devote my life to spreading my knowledge and ongoing research with everyone I am able to reach. My ultimate career goal is to positively impact the food culture in Latin America, and if possible, the entire world. With the help of today's advanced technological networks and growing connections I aspire to educate people about the different food groups and how they complement each other, about their daily dietary requirements and how to meet them, and the important role that nutrition plays in our lives and the changes we can make in order to live a healthier …show more content…
As the economy in Venezuela continues to worsen, the quality of nourishment of the overall population has suffered severely. The country currently has become a place where it is largely impossible for most citizens to obtain basic products to meet their dietary requirements, and even more difficult to afford the services of a certified nutritionist. My goal is to dedicate part of my career to provide guidance and assistance to these communities through volunteering for free service or by broadcasting profitable nutritional
Keyla Negron is a first generation college student at the University of Connecticut, better known as UConn. She states that being a first generation college student was an accomplishment, but that it brought “all the challenges of trying to succeed”. She started college just like many other new students, not knowing exactly what to study or what to do after graduating. This made Keyla realize that is “one of the positive things” of college because “you have the opportunity to take different classes and discover your likes and dislikes”. In her case, it took her just about three years to discover a passion in nutrition, an area she never had imagined herself studying, although Keyla does realize that she was always “questioning how certain foods affect our body and what defined a healthy food and an unhealthy food”.
To emphasize his point as well as help readers understand his arguments, analogies are often used to compare diets to an activity or a way of thinking. This use of language guides readers to understand the complex names nutritionism has given the nutrients inside of food. Readers therefor...
I think this project was a great opportunity for me to learn how to educate and guide patient’s in making better nutritional decisions with the help of my using MyFitness Pal. I think MyFitness Pal is an excellent resource for any patient that is interested in improving their nutrition. Nutrition is often neglected by patient 's, therefore, as dental professionals it is important to use the latest technology to attract our patient’s to become more interested in their nutrition. The positive impact of this project has encouraged me to recommend using MyFitness Pal to my patient 's as a hands on activity to help correlate nutrition and the patient’s overall health. This project also allowed me to become aware of the poor food choices I made, which will help to benefit my patient’s that have a similar diet.
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
“As I work every day”, she started, “even though this is a job that I do in a repetitive fashion, I am moved every time by the fact that I can treat and improve people’s lives through food: what we might sometimes care less.” “I am able to help people with what they choose to eat, which in the end will help them walk the paths of healthy lives. And this is the driving force that strengthens my life as well.” And she added, “But compared to the amount and intensity of education one has to attain in becoming a dietitian, I don’t think this profession gets paid enough.” “And I devote plethora of my time in counseling my patients to reshape their nutritional practices. But I realized that these practices are really tough to break. This is when the negative aspects of being a dietitian come into
The late Nineteenth Century saw increased industrial growth in the United States. One of the major developments that led to the increased industrial growth was the expansion of the railroad. The railroad provided infrastructure that made it cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Investors could now build industries in different parts of the country and transport products fast and to a wide network of consumers. Another resource that fostered industrial growth was the influx of immigrants into the United States. During this time, many foreigners were able to come into the country and provide cheap labor for building industries thus reducing the cost of industrialization. In addition, the country was in need of vigorous development to cater for the needs of the growing population at that time.
A healthy diet may help to prevent certain chronic long-term conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and may reduce the risk of developing certain cancers. Nutrition information offers a public health tool that could be used to promote informed consumer choice and aid consumption of a healthy diet. However millions of women chose to take dietary supplements to maintain good health, ease illnesses and defy ageing. Supplements are also used as a medication in women with decreased iron stores, because of menses and pregnancies (Anderson & Fitzgerald, 2010). The main aim of the research project is to explore the motivations surrounding the use of nutritional information among young women and relate this information to the choice to use supplements. This is important to women’s health and the topic of nutrition as a large amount of money is spent on both food and supplements. When nursing patients with a wide range of different conditions nutrition is the foundation of all treatment. It also reduces mortality, relapses and subsequent hospital admissions. The complexity of this subjective person and objective body aligned philosophically as interpretivism and positivism respectively reinforces the importance of both qualitative and quantitative approaches contributing to understanding of this (Gerrish and Lacey 2006). Nutrition is also crucial in health and social policy financially through reduction in readmissions which will reduce costs for practice as obesity and poor diet cost the NHS billions of pounds every year (Department Of Health, 2013).
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. Even so, its recommendations are considered almost “holy” by physicians, nutritionists, and dieters, but in reality, they are the root cause of the problem. A single visit to our local public school cafeteria and it will become clear that they do not have the best interests of the children at heart. What they are feeding our innocent children is preposterous. Doctors, the people we trust and expect to be “the experts”, do not know much about the subject of nutrition. A vast majority of medical schools in the U.S. require just 25-30 hours or less of nutrition training, and some do not require at all. So doctors must rely on the ...
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should be exclusively breastfed for about the first 6 months of life, meaning no additional foods or fluids unless medically indicated. Babies should then continue to breastfeed for a year, or however long the mother or baby desire. Most people do not understand the importance of breastfeeding mainly because they are unaware of the benefits of breast milk. Research shows a significant correlation between breastfeeding and intelligence, such as a higher IQ. Researchers are not sure whether breastfeeding causes a higher intelligence or if it is just an association.
It is day one of your weight lifting program and you are ready to start your body transformation. It is the best workout out there, but with all of this searching for a workout plan, do you have a solid nutrition plan? Nutrition is not only 90% of the battle when it comes to improving all the aspects of health and fitness. It can be the ultimate reason why you may not be seeing any results. Trust me, when I say that iit has taken me years to figure out what foods, how much to eat, and how often to eat. What makes this challenging is everybody is different. What may work for you may not work for me. Some people can get away with eating crap and not gain an ounce but with me if I have a piece of cake, I will gain 5 lbs. I am a creature
Based on a variety of personal experiences, I became very interested in the role of foods and nutrition. During my last year of highschool, my favorite who had a successful business succumbed to a strange alliment. He was tired all the time and was diagnosed to live only 1 year. While he didn't have cancer, his bloodwork had many abnormalites the doctors couldn't diagnose. He began to seek out other doctors who ultimately recommended that his see a dietitian. This changed his life. He started to eat low fat foods thats packed in vitamins, quit smoking and drinking and started to exercise regular bases. One year later, he could get out of bed, live as an full energetic person as he had before. This made him inspired to study nutrition in America. I was overwhelmed after I knew his history and never looked at food the same way again. It is clear to me now that how people eat and what people eat is an important factor in acheving optimum health, that just exercise isn't enough.
Although the treatment process was often frustrating and challenging, I actually came to enjoy my appointments with the nutritionist in her tiny, cozy office, cluttered with food models and recipes. She taught me the basics of nutrition and helped me form a healthier relationship with food. It took time and quite a few tearful sessions, but I slowly started to view food in terms of the nutrients and benefits it could offer me instead of thinking of food as the enemy. During my recovery, I experienced the powerful impact that proper nutrition could have on overall health. I gained back all the weight I had lost, and my hair stopped falling out. However, the biggest changes were the ones most people could not see just by looking at me; they were the emotional and mental changes that came from properly nourishing my body again. I could concentrate on schoolwork instead of planning out my next meal, and I ...
I fell in love with nutrition and dietetics prior to knowing it was a field of study. I grew up as the only child and cite that as the cause for my poor food choices and oversized portions. My parents were like any other parents; they spoiled me and allowed me to eat McDonald’s, Burger King, and other fast foods. My obsession began at a very young age, but it was not until several events transpired. I can remember it like yesterday.
Nutrition should be an important part of everyone’s lives. It is the process of obtaining the food necessary for health and growth, meaning everyone in the world needs to pay attention to their personal nutrition, in order to live their best possible lives. Good nutrition contains the proper amounts of the six food groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, meat and beans, dairy, and oil; each and every day.
“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” -Thomas Edison This quote summarizes my motivation to enter the field of dietetics. Eating healthy will always be the foundation of my beliefs, both personally and professionally. Born into a family that always reminisced how the food they brought to the table was grown down the road from our home; that table was always filled with fresh meats, vegetables, and heart healthy oils, while seeing others destroy their health by following the wrong diet as a lifestyle.
