“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” -Thomas Edison This quote summarizes my motivation to enter the field of dietetics. Eating healthy will always be the foundation of my beliefs, both personally and professionally. Born into a family that always reminisced how the food they brought to the table was grown down the road from our home; that table was always filled with fresh meats, vegetables, and heart healthy oils, while seeing others destroy their health by following the wrong diet as a lifestyle. I find it disappointing that the majority of food choices available to modern consumers lack proper nutrition, since a large percentage of elements that plague western society stem from poor diet. I feel that it is my personal call and duty to educate people on more nutritious diet choices to ultimately live healthier.

For me, I found peace in practicing healthy food habits. That passion had led me to being part of the first graduating class in the newly established nutrition science major at Al-Baath University in the city of Homs, Syria. Wanting to utilize my skills to help refugees, I began volunteering for the Red Cross. As a Red Cross volunteer, I spent six months preparing food for Syria’s homeless and poverty stricken. It was there that I gained an interest in world hunger by seeing firsthand the effects of starvation on human beings. Along with the experience I gained helping to provide nutritious meals to refugees in neighboring cities, I completed an internship at a local endocrinologist’s office.
