An example would be, when an elderly patient presents to the emergency room with confusion, the health care team will do what is necessary to diagnosis this patient. The Certified Nurse Assistant may take the patients vital signs, the Registered Nurse will obtain the urine specimen to assess for a urinary tract infection (UTI), and the physician will determine if it is an UTI, what antibiotic, and treatment will be needed.
The necessary resources included technology and space for the Nursing Student to collect data and the expertise of the various stakeholders. The space for the student was readily available, and communication between the student and clinic staff was excellent throughout the duration of the project. The resources necessary to meet the long-term outcomes of the project include the extended clinic space and an increased number of providers to form healthcare teams and meet the increasing needs of the growing patient population.
Nursing is a demanding career that requires proficiency in many types of skills to ensure patient safety and wellbeing as well as timely efficient care. One important attribute that a nurse must have is to be effective at teamwork and collaboration. This semester I had the opportunity to practice working in a group, and it was a rewarding experience. The benefits of teamwork, such as, creating a group of support and splitting a large task into smaller manageable sections, cannot be understated. Teamwork in any organization in this case health care is an essential element when it comes to sharing of workload and efficient patient care. Most units in any hospital setting have professionals with different experiences and coming from deferent backgrounds including training and culture. All these individuals with different ideas need to work to getter to achieve the organizational goal, it is a prerogative of the Manager in ensuring that this teamwork is achieve.
The most recent example of interdisciplinary teamwork that I have learned about is a policy that was explained to me during my preceptorship. The policy calls for weekly interdisciplinary rounds where nurses talk about their patients to a team that includes a physician, respiratory therapist, dietitian, and any other member of the healthcare team. The purpose of the weekly rounds is to evaluate the patient 's progress and to adjust and coordinate their care accordingly. This practice is beneficial because it allows all members of the healthcare team to stay up to date on all aspects of care. I believe that being familiar with all aspects of care can aid in making better decisions for the patients. The only negative things I can think of with this practice are the possible increase in paperwork and on a personal note, increased anxiety for the health care worker leading the rounds.
