While reading the book Mindset by Carol S. Dweck I learned much about my personal learning style, the realization about how I work with others, and how much an attitude or preconceived idea can influence how I live my life. This also directly impacts my thoughts as an aspiring teacher. All of which have made me come to the realization that as a teacher I will need to be aware of not only my mindset but also be aware of how students can be influenced by their mindsets.
My communication style tends to float between two very distinct classifications found in the Forbes’ Communication Styles PowerPoint and the DISC Personality Profile descriptions. This assignment has allowed me the opportunity to further reflect upon my own communication styles in varying environments, as well as identify and hopefully minimize the weaknesses that I need to improve upon before I become the sole administrator of a site. Who would have ever thought taking a college course would require one to learn how to learn? It is a good concept we normally undergo at a very young age. At the pre-school age one will find children learning their strength and weakness through their playtime. Since I am an introvert, I cannot use the avoidance as it relies on punishment but I can use approach which utilizes reward to get a response. Learning style is the way we tend to learn best. It involves our preferred methods and combination of various learning models. There are several learning style models. Assessment is the primary step in the process to determining the characteristics of the learner and identifying learning needs. (Edelman 222)
Methods like experiments, field trips or role play are rarely used. Because of that, labs and tutorials are more essential for these learners. Among the methods that can help these learners are by trying to use all the senses in the learning process because the more senses you use the higher recall will be, as you have many clues. In addition, make notes with several examples for each concept and use your own examples, the more personal examples you create, the better you remember. A very important thing to note is that this questionnaire is not designed to predict the ability of someone to make the diagnosis.
The reason for doing this report is to try and discover which is my best and worst way to learn and then to come up with a strategy for improving my ability to learn. The first thing that I need to do is research what different learning styles there is, after I have done this I can determine what are my preferred learning styles.
For this task I am going to assess my own communication skills and evaluate the factors that influenced how effective both my one-to-one and group interactions were. I am going to discuss my use of verbal, non-verbal, pace, tone, body language and language used.

These interactions are essential to how we display ourselves to others, and our intended perception in the minds of our fellow acquaintances, friends, and family. Although a large part of our communication is nonverbal, it cannot be forgotten that what you say and how you say it, dictates a significant portion of the direction of these interactions. Wow! I have a personal learning style! If I had given any thought to my learning style prior to this course, I would have said simply, “Some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not.” Now I can say, “I am a grouper, a top-down learner, an owl, in the C-D quadrants, and my strong intelligences are linguistic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal”. What all this means, still, is some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not. But there I go again, simplifying the matter.
“Speak only if it improves upon the silence” (Mahatma Ghandi). Depending on the person and their opinion, silence is a very envied trait. In moments of fury and frustration, it often helps to step back and think everything through before blurting out the wrong thing. In Outdoor Leadership, I have been subject to many moments where it was best for me to not voice my opinion in certain situations. Through the program, I discovered that I have a great sense of the right and wrong moments to speak. Though voicing my opinion in certain situations could be very helpful to my wellbeing, there are moments I see it fit to stay quiet.
I realized that my speech should flow back and forth between the discussions of effective vs. ineffective communication. This strategy will better illustrate to my audience how to successfully get their ideas across.
