Four years of my life have passed away in a blink! I remember entering freshmen year of high school feeling utterly nervous; now as a senior, I have been accepted into college! Oh my. In high school, I have taken both AP and IB classes. Along with rigorous school work, I have participated in extracurricular activities like Track & Field, Biomedical Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Key Club, Journalism, and National Social Studies Honor Society. By extensively being involved in high school, I have learnt the most important thing in life: the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule states “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Thus, the rule has driven me to unconditionally give service to my community. Two major …show more content…
My responsibility was to tutor the underclassmen in world history one and world history two. Though I committed most of my time to the two organizations, my service did not stop there. I was also involved in several other clubs and activities where I provided service to others. For example, through Track & Field I helped raise money for the team by selling Christmas trees during the holiday season; in Biomedical Club my club members and I picked up the trash in our school’s football, soccer, and baseball fields during our study hall hour; in Journalism I interviewed students and teachers and also helped in the production of my school’s newspaper; lastly, I helped make posters for a medical camp for Bhutanese refugees, ran by my mother and her co-workers, which is affiliated to Towson University. My involvement in all of the activities mentioned above has taught me to be concerned for social justice and to live in an ethically responsible way. I am a Black and White type of person. I see things in right and wrong, and for me it is really good to make that gray happen.
Serving for the community and the school without compensation or recognition is a defining characteristic of the National Honor Society. I believe that I provide plenteous hours of service to my school and community. In my school, I am a member of Interact Club- a club that encourages volunteer work regarding the school and the community. I have participated in many Interact activities such as Make a Difference Day- cleaning trash at the Wildlife Refuge, Martin Luther King Day at Stockton University- helping organizations such as Circle K, and Project Green- cleaning trash and planting at the Atlantic City beach. In addition to these activities, I have volunteered at Seashore Gardens over the summer before my junior year. There, I was able to engage and interact with the elderly by coloring with them, distributing their lunches, and getting to know them. During my first day volunteering there, I had made a friend instantly as we bonded over gossiping and each other’s daytime activities. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. In addition, I volunteered my time by bagging groceries at ShopRite and washing cars to help fundraise for the Absegami girls soccer team as well as making Valentine's Day cards for the elderly, decorating classroom doors for Christmas, and helping my class with a cookie fundraiser. Helping the environment, aiding the elderly, bagging groceries, helping my class, and being
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
1. History is the study of human recorded past. ECCO stands for expectations, constraints, choices, and outcomes.
In 10th grade, I made a club with my sister called "TPF Rangers Club" to support the Theodore Payne Foundation. Like I mentioned in the previous response, TPF is a non-profit organization that serves to preserve California native plants and I have been volunteering there since 9th grade. One time I saw an article that they are seeking funds to build a new nursery because the current nursery was too small to hold all types of native plants. I was depressed that they barely have any support. As the president of the TPF Rangers Club, I believed that we should give financial support and thus planned a fundraiser for the foundation that will at least help them to buy more plants or new tools to use for gardening. The club as a whole designed a tote bag and sold them in school, Ralph's, and even at churches. As a result, we made a total of $280 and we donated all the money to the foundation. I as a leader participated in all the
1.High-Rank Countries – Countries positioning high in sexual orientation advancement incorporate Greenland, a large portion of the European nations, South Korea, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Greece, and a few nations in the Middle East. In any case, ladies and men are not completely measure up to in these nations. Some of these nations have positive qualities, for example, high female proficiency rates, low maternal death rates, and high rates of female college understudies, however abusive behavior at home is still across the board.
American History X is an American film released in 1998, directed by Tony Kaye (his first feature film) starring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong in the leading roles. The film tells the story of the two Vinyard brothers, Derek and Danny and their family living in Venice Beach, California. Derek is a member of a neo-Nazi group and is very involved in the defense of the white race he calls '' higher '' while Danny, younger, admires his brother and just wants to behave like him. Sentenced to three years in prison for the murder of two black criminals trying to steal his car, Derek leaves Danny alone with no marks and under the influence of the neo-Nazi group and its founder Cameron Alexander. Although intelligent but young, Danny seems lost and falls into racist ideas that the milieu he frequents keeps hammering him. It begins to affect his school work where, one day, he writes an essay praising Mein Kampf. Dr. Sweeney, the black Principal of the Venice Beach High School, is almost paternal to Danny and tries to help him despite his xenophobic and dangerous behavior. The film's title is actually the name Dr. Sweeney gives private lessons he decided to teach himself to the young Danny, his first duty being to write a new essay about his brother, which will serve as a guideline to the film. The Principal aims at preventing Danny from having the same fate as his brother and eventually ending up in jail, because he has hope in him and does not want to abandon him in this unhealthy environment, starting with Seth, the former obese friend of Derek, deeply racist and hateful toward African-Americans. After his release from prison, Derek realizes the consequences of his behavior on Danny and in what situation he has left his family. Follows...
My community service has inspired me to help others through the field of nursing. I volunteer after school with my high school's Athletic Trainer at games, practices and other sporting events to help prevent and diagnose injuries for student athletes so there is less need to spend money on an E.R. or doctor visit for a simple sprain.
Appiah, Makau and Marty believe that the Golden Rule is important in understanding another person’s point of view. Makua and Marty’s interpretation of the Golden Rule is that it “encourage us to hear others as we wish to be heard” (19). On the other hand, Appiah interprets it as “we should take other people’s interests seriously” (63), because what we would wish to be done us, sometimes might not be the same as what another person would wish to be done to them. We all have different beliefs and values, so we should understand other people’s values and put ourselves in their shoes then decide what they would want done to
I have participated in various community service projects; for example one in which as a class
Throughout my years attending Woodside, I joined the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Being involved with these two clubs so far has provided me with the astonishing lessons that I will need in life to have a successful future for myself. Also, I am planning to go very far in life after high school due to these two important clubs because of the many ways they have helped me as an individual. Not only did I participate in clubs but I have also volunteered at Greenwood Elementary School. Being a volunteer at this school involved me working with kindergarteners and 1st graders. My duties included reading to the children, helping with any assigned classwork or homework, making sure they are safe, and assisting the teachers with anything they needed help with. I have always had a passion of helping others and volunteering at Greenwood was a very enjoyable experience for
In community service I some things I’ve done have been work in restoring Evergreen Cemetery and working in The Ronald McDonald House. In working in Evergreen we mostly work to clear the overgrown cemetery. There are many groups that participate in this, such as ASPiRE, Into The Streets, off campus groups and even military groups so you meet a lot of people doing this. It’s pretty straight forward work, clearing the vines and plants from the cemetery and gravesites. But sometimes we need help clearing some particularly tough or difficult piece of the vegetation and we had to work together and far as leadership, for the most part there
For example, when I was in high school, I was a member of Beta Club, an organization where students volunteer for different service opportunities in the community. The group I was a part of would volunteer monthly at a local nursing home. We would meet and visit with the residents, play bingo with them, and help organize different events at the home. Another way I’ve been engaged is through participating in a service project called “Operation Christmas Child” with the organization Samaritan’s Purse. A couple of years ago, my mother and I travelled to their warehouse in Lawrenceville to help pack shoeboxes full of gifts and toys, that then get sent to children living outside the United States, in areas that have been affected by various unfortunate circumstances such as poverty, natural disasters, or war. As volunteers, we could also track the shipments and be notified that the children had received their shoeboxes. Being a part of this incredible project was an experience I will never forget. I consider myself very fortunate to have had these opportunities to volunteer, as they gave me a great sense of joy to be a part of and inspired me to continue to take part in further engagement opportunities in my community. Now attending the University of Georgia, I am a member of University Union, where we put on events to both entertain students and
This report goes into detail about the reasons social studies is a core subject in the New Zealand curriculum, how social studies has a unique role in preparing children to be active and critical participants in a changing society, defines and explains what ‘powerful social studies’ is and lastly it will explain what qualities are required of a successful Social Studies teacher. For the purpose of this report “social studies is the systematic study of an integrated body of content from the social sciences and humanities to develop socially informed and effective citizens who are empowered with knowledge and skills in a changing society” (Barr, H., Graham, J., Hunter, P., Keown, P., & McGee, J. 1997, p. 5).
Social Studies education is a subject in today’s schools that is undervalued. The study of social studies in schools help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world (Seefeldt, Castle, & Falconer, 2010). When participating in social studies class children are learning so much about who they are, where they came from, how to succeed in the world, and more. Most of what we teach daily includes an aspect of social studies. But, since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 de-emphasis or nonexistence of elementary social studies is the national focus because of high stakes testing (Sunal, & Sunal, 2008).
