The purpose of this test is to establish how the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a reliable predictor of treatment outcomes in substance abuse programs in correctional facilities.The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a self-inventory assessment test. The MBTI was originally published in 1962 CITATION Luc14 l 1033 (Luciano, et al., 2014)the test instrument version consist of a 166-item form F and a 126-item version form G. The form F is primarily where concentration is given because it is the most widely used CITATION Gre07 l 1033 (Gregory, 2007). The MBTI test is a useful instrument with understanding individual’s commonalities and differences with other people. The MBTI is a tool to help the individual with finding his/her own individuality and uniqueness in an effort to comprehend that each individual has their own uniqueness, it is this phenomena that makes this instrument prevail and popular in careers, career counseling, learning, relationships and personal growth.
While choosing a career can be a very stressful process the importance of knowing your personality type can be a great benefit in helping one get focused on his/her career. The more understanding that one has of their personality type helps the individual with the culture of their work environment, enhancing and developing new skills and coping with change in the workplace (The Myers & Briggs Foundation, 2014).
In education it is important to provide learners with the best possible tools needed in order to succeed. Understanding that educators are a key component to providing the necessary tools to helping learners became successful. The MBTI provides a bridge that identifies types that enhances the progress of a learner’s ability to perform successfully (The Myers & Briggs Foundation, 2014).
Accordingly to the MBTI foundation many of the pioneering studies of the (MBTI) instrument were done with high school and college students. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test, otherwise known as the MBTI test, is a questionnaire intended to measure and evaluates the psychological preferences of individuals in relation to their perception of the world, and generally their decision making ability. This was developed and got form typological theories that were deduced by Cal Gustav Jung. He categorized them into four psychological functions, which each unique individual uses to experience the world. They include feeling, sensation, intuition and thinking (Myers I. B., 1987).

The Myers-Briggs profile was based on the test developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers (“The History of the MTBI assessment”, 2017). There are eight letters that can make up your profile E, N, F, P, I, S, T, and J. “E” stands for extrovert, meaning someone outgoing or social. “N” stands for intuitive, meaning the person goes off of their reasoning or feelings about something. “F” is for feelings, which represent an emotional state or belief about something. “P” is the symbol for perceiving, which means the way you process or take in a certain situation. “I” is for introvert, someone who keeps to themselves. “S” is for sensing, meaning you use common sense. “T” is for thinking, meaning you use your intellect. By being an INTP, I have interpreted why some things work in my favor. Being a perceiver allows me to embrace change while keeping any ill-thoughts (regarding changes I do not agree with) to myself. This personality blend, also, allows me to participate in group settings when brainstorming is needed, and having a lower preference in introversion grants me just enough patience to play along with the extroverts to complete the task. When putting two letters together, I have better understood my temperament. “Temperament arises from the regulation of arousal and emotion reliably producing characteristic, habitual responses to experience”, and mine is Intuitive Thinking (NT), so I create many options in my head (Blandin, K., February 2013, para. 4). On the other hand, my personality leads me to situations where I make irrational decisions because I’m not granted enough time to think everything through. When I took the MBTI, some of the things I knew about myself were reinforced, and I also learned some new things about myself and my personality. The four letter code that I received was ISTJ, representing introversion, sensing, thinking, and judging. I expected each of these preferences, and when I read the definition of each, it further strengthened my understanding of what my personality really means in “technical terms.” My four letter code came with titles such as the Duty Fulfiller, the Responsible Realist and the Inspector, names I also agree that pertain to myself. Some of the attributes of an ISTJ personality type include serious and quiet, dependable, well-organized, hard-working, goal-striving, determined, logic-based, orderly, and traditional. If I were asked to describe myself, I would more than likely use nearly all of these terms to do so, which goes to show how accurate this test was, for me at least. But, I also can pick out some challenges that may arise because of the personality type that I am. One example relates to being an introvert, who prefer to focus on one thing at a time.
The MBTI assessments relate to Jung's theory of personality development because the purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung, (1921/1971)”Understandable and useful in people's lives. The core of the theory is that much apparently random disparity in behavior is actually quite orderly and dependable, being due to basic differences in the way individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.” (CAPT, 2014) This information will enable me to be successful as a counselor because I can incorporate the MBTI assessment as a part of my observations from a client to better understand my clients. I feel the test is accurate enough and can lead me to many answers based on my client’s results.
Personality types stems from Carl Jung spend time observing personality preferences, which he later on published in his in 1921. Carl’s discovery of the two major typical differences in human psychology such as extrovert and introvert influenced Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers theories and lead them to experiment during World War II. Myers and Briggs worked on methods that would help women, who heretofore had no prior workplace experience, find those types of jobs that were most comfortable and effective (Myers & Myers, 1996). The three learning styles I have chosen to write about would meet the needs of the learners and provide an effective learner/teacher experience. The Myers and Briggs Analysis is a series of questions that when answered are examined and grouped together in order to determine the personalities of those taking this test. This particular test can result in sixteen different outcomes or types of personalities, which is determined by four different categories that judge if you are introverted or extroverted, use your senses or your intuition, your choice to think or use your feelings, and finally if you are judgmental or perceptive. These series of questions are designed to judge our personalities and help us to determine which career pathways we will be most suited for based on our personality traits and abilities to work well with others, which is important for our future decisions.
The bases of this paper will be based on the results that I had obtained when I took the Myers-Briggs personality test. The results that I had obtained was that I was determined to be an ENFJ. I will go into depth about letter and how each represents that a specific aspect of my personality. The results that I had received were not what I had expected, but the more I read about the trait the more I realized how it suited me. I will also talk about the information that I had found useful from the book, Type Talk at Work: How the 16 Personalities Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger, which gave me insight on how to interact with other personality types especially in the work environment. The information that I absorbed from the personality test and from the book will go into use in my personal and work life so that both environments will be cohesive and peaceful.
Earth is populated by billions of people – one person different from the next. While physical traits like fingerprints and DNA give people their individual identity, there is more to identity than physical traits. The experience of tragedy and joy also plays a critical role in giving people their individual identity. Personality is the other factor that separates one person from others, and the personality of an individual depends heavily on his or her beliefs, culture, and the environment in which he or she is raised. There are several different types of personality tests that one can take to identify certain traits of his or her identity, and one of them is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). According to MBTI and my life experience, as an ISTP I possess an inquisitive mind, an adventuresome spirit, and a desire to be active.
The following information can be found in the “Results and discussion” section: “The analyses reported above show that MBTI items fail to form the factors hypothesized by the test’s authors” (Saggino, Cooper, & Kline, 2001). The information I found in this study complimented the conclusion of the other article I reviewed. They both concluded that the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator had many faults and was not reliable nor valid as far as solid science is concerned.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has recognized my profile as Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking and Judgment (INTJ). As an introvert, I can get nervous among other people. It does not pose a problem for an individual. On the other hand, in order to be an effective leader, it is important for me to keep a profound communicational relationship with my subordinates. Without proper communication skills, it is not possible to establish a functional relationship with my subordinates. This may jeopardize the success of any activity that we are involved in. The introvert part is perhaps the major barrier which may keep me away from being an effective leader.
