I perceive leadership as when someone decides to take action and lead a group of people to do many different things in life. It can be something simple or it can be something that can change the world. I think that leadership is something that helps to empower people to do good for their world and help set a good example for the others around them as well. Leaders are also considerate of others opinions and ideas and do not try to just over power everyone else. They become a leader for the sole purpose of creating good in their community.
Leadership is something that has always been of interest to me. I love to help others in need or be involved in anything that will help benefit someone else. I have been involved in a variety of leadership

The cause that I have seen the most positive overall outcome is with an organization I am involved in as a leader called LEGIT, which stands for Leaders Encouraging Good Intentions Together. Through this group, I have been able to utilize my leadership, faithfulness, reliability, and loyalty by completing tasks I am given to do with hard work and dependability. I feel that I can relate well with not just students my age but engaging with younger students as well. The main objective of this small group is to provide a safe place for students in high school to go to after Friday night sports events to help them make better decisions than going to do activities that can lead to bad consequences.
This is something that we try to do after every Friday night sporting event that is played at home in Sedgwick, KS. We named these events “Overtime”. The leadership that I have with this group includes coming up with ideas for activities at the event, planning and asking others to help to provide tasty food for students and writing a positive message that is discussed for a few minutes at the beginning of each Overtime. I do my best to promote and encourage other students to participate in these. It is something that I try and encourage more student participation by explaining to students in all high school grades about it so they understand what LEGIT stands for. It is a group where you can feel comfortable about yourself and can be with others who want to live above the influence as well. This is something that has been progressively growing in my home town for many years. I have been in this group for four years and have put forth my best effort to make LEGIT something even
better. I also feel it is important to lead by example. LEGIT has helped me grow as a young woman and become more confident in my abilities and choices that I make in my life. I believe that this can also influence others when they see that they are not alone in their beliefs and actions.
Leadership is contagious throughout the world and most importantly in the Army. It is not just my view, but of all leaders, at all levels, that organizations are responsible for setting conditions that lead to long-term organizational success. As I reflect on my experiences, through experience and observation, I realize how my values, beliefs, and perspectives about leadership continuously evolve over time. Recognizing these changes over time helps me better understand that people in organizations have different perspectives in life. This leadership narrative serve as important guiding principles for how I will lead at the organizational level and represents my thought, values and beliefs.

It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
At the beginning of this quarter we were informed that we would be required to define and describe our philosophy of leadership by the end of August. I thought to myself- that there are two types of leaders which include the good ones and the bad ones. As today is the last day of class in Foundations of Leadership- I am proud to say that my view has most definitely changed and there are definitely many different types of leaders that originally thought. Throughout this short presentation I would like to define my beliefs and thoughts regarding leadership and describe my learnings and benefits from taking this course by describing my philosophy.
What Leadership Means Leadership is 'the behaviour of an individual when he is directing the activities of a group towards a shared goal'. (Hemphill and Coons, 1957, p.7) A leader is interpreted as someone who sets direction in an effort and influences people to follow that direction. How they set that direction and influence people depends on a variety of factors. To really comprehend the 'territory' of leadership, one should briefly scan some of the major theories, notice various styles of leadership and review some of the suggested traits and characteristics that leaders should have. There are many leadership theories.
When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. My leadership style is defined as a personal and interpersonal skill sets developed through the life experiences and professional growth during my tenure within a structured organized environment and/or organization. 1. I have had known many leaders since beginning my career in the Coast Guard. The leaders I remembered varied within the ranks from junior enlisted to senior officer. A couple of my influences succeeded through their career while a couple experienced tribulations along the way, but always recovered. The leaders that had the most influence were those that had a good balance between positional and personal power. My leadership influences were introduced to me during my first and nineteenth year in the Coast Guard.
Leadership is one of the major values that I have within myself because it is a position which lets someone direct people to a certain destination. I enjoy being a leadership because with in leadership responsibility also tags along. When I am being a leader it does not mean that I will tell people what to do, it means that I will guide people to a certain purpose by being proactive with everyone of my followers, meaning that no one is left behind. The insufficiencies of effective leadership that exist in today’s organizations have led me to pursue my journey into leadership. I have experienced first-hand the devastation the lack of leadership can bring to a company, from micro-managers to in-group favoritism and toxic leadership.
