. A job well done is the goal of every Coast Guardsman. We seldom agree on how that goal is best achieved and we have different levels of motivation for achieving the goal in a given timeframe but we all still feel good when we get there. A good leader knows that he must work with the tools he has. The tools in this case being the personnel he is leading. Every unit is different and every unit is staffed with a unique crew of individuals which all have their own strengths and weaknesses, skills and personalities. A good leader will quickly recognize the self starters and those who require more direction; those who work well alone and those who work best in a team. A good leader also understands that everyone has value and its okay if some have more value than others. Nothing in life is fair and some members are going to work harder than others. Unfortunately, in my career, I have had more poor leaders than good …show more content…
Working well with others is an invaluable tool in a leader’s tool bag. Just as diverse personalities are an asset to a mission they can also present challenges to a leader. A good leader will invariably have myriad personalities to contend with and quite often will have to manage difficult personalities. Respect feeds into making these situations work. Every member wants to know that their contribution is valuable and every member wants to feel respected. This becomes challenging when a diverse team of conflicting personalities works together. Effective leadership requires the ability to ply these personalities into a cooperative team. Setting an example is useful. When the members of the team see their leader treating each and every member, even the difficult members, with equal respect the team tends to emulate that behavior. If personalities conflict a leader has to shift to one on one mentoring to draw out the appropriate conduct. Conflict can be toxic and there are times when members simply have to be professional and act
In order to better understand my leadership philosophy, you must first understand who I am. I spent 8 years active duty in the Marine Corps. Afterwards, I did a multitude of different civilian jobs while pursuing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership from Friends University. I have been married for almost 20 years and have two awesome boys, ages 1 and 5. I think family is imperative in keeping Soldiers grounded and in a good state of mental health.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Natural born leaders are almost nonexistent in today’s military. Military members have to complete numerous leadership classes as you progress through the military ranks whether you are an enlisted or as an officer. There are many attributes that people would have to possess to be considered a great leader. Some of those attributes include honesty, respect, trustworthy, and enthusiasm just to name a few. There have been many leaders I have worked with or for over my past 19 years in the Army. One of the most important one would have to be honesty. Honesty is important because if the people that work for you cannot believe what you tell them, they will never trust you or support you. Employees can make or break their supervisor. If they do not like or trust the manager they will not respect them and they will only do the least amount possible. When your employees believe that, you value their opinion and their work ethic. Like you and trust, you they will do anything you ask of them. Whether the decision is right or wrong it is a decision, a leader never want to leave their subordinat...
“In order to be a good leader, there are two things to remember. Lead from the Front and always set the Example. From these two leadership principles, everything else will fall into place.”
Much research has been done in order to comprehend the answer to the question “Do Leaders Matter?” In order to decipher this dilemma we will have to distinguish the fine and horrible rationale for leaders. Furthermore, we would have to recognize what it is to be a leader, and give the impression on how people view leaders. Are all leaders instinctive to lead, or do they have to discover the technique? There are many inquiries that can be solicited, but first we need to comprehend some of the dynamics that make up a good leader. Understanding how a good leader maneuvers will allow us to scrutinize some of the biases that revolve around a leader. I will strive to leave no uncertainty in your mind that leader’s do not have an immense influence on performance.

Leadership transforms potential into reality. Leadership acts as the catalyst that makes all other elements work together; without leadership, all other business resources lie dormant. Savvy business leaders are in tune with the needs and issues of their subordinates, and keep up to date on new developments in leadership theory and methodology to maximize their effectiveness.
What makes a good leader? It depends. Most organizations look for individuals that have something to offer when they look at credentials or a great interview but looks can be deceiving does a good manager necessarily mean that a good leader I do not think so.
Leadership. Most people think of it as one person who has the loudest voice and leads everyone to a common goal (as seen during a Google image search for “leadership”). Northouse describes a leader as someone who “may have a high profile or a low profile, but in every situation there are leadership demands placed on the individual who is the leader. Being a leader is challenging, exciting, and rewarding, and carries with it many responsibilities (pg. 1).” The common dictionary defines a leader as “the action of leading a group of people or an organization” and a leader as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country.” There are many connotations leadership gives off to people and some people may be intimidated by it and may never want to pursue any kind of leadership role. But what those people fail to consider is the reality that you are a leader of your own life. Everyone has the capability to make their own decisions, like attending college, or choosing to have a different belief system than what they have been raised with. For myself, I chose to attend MCLA though I had 6 other options of colleges I could’ve attended. Now that I am here, I have to fend for myself and make my time here worthwhile. MCLA has many
Quality leadership is essential today to achieve organizational excellence, stability, and success. According to Blades (2006), a good leader can drive an organization to ultimate success, while a bad leader can potentially run a business into the ground. Quality leaders are good role models that exhibit honorable character, and value an organizations most important asset, which is it’s collection of people that possess different skills, and talents necessary to achieve goals effectively. The intent of this paper is to share a negative leadership experience, and to make recommendations to rectify the negative leadership.
There are multiple definitions of leadership. In a way snow can be described by words “cold”, “white”, “water”, leadership may have many facets. My definitions stem from understanding the role and responsibilities of senior enlisted members (the Chiefs) in the Coast Guard as defined by our history and policies. One of the most important aspects of leadership is being a bridge between the enlisted members and the Command. We support and enforce the Command policies and assure the needs, wellbeing, and expectations of the crew. The second set of definitions can be derived from the senior enlisted evaluations: Directing others, Working with others, Developing subordinates, Responsibility, Evaluations, Work-life sensitivity, Setting an example. To be a good leader I have to excel in these categories.
A society with the absence of leadership will lead to chaos. Recently, the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat died and this has caused his followers to be in disarray. Currently in Palestine the followers are trying to ameliorate life and figure who will replace Arafat. For when there is an absence of leadership it causes followers to panic. The panic of the people leads to the confusion of their everyday life. Leadership implies that a person must posses certain qualities. There are many traits that must be shown to be a good leader. If a leader is noncommittal and callow then a society will fail. However when trying to restore order in a society one person may try to accomplish it by themselves but this rarely works. When working alone or in a small group, three things can happen and lead to more disarray. These things are isolation, too much authority, and control.
What is a leader? When thinking of this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position. –Brian Tracy. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills come from life experiences, education and employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other leaders. Having a title or high above power does not make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs, knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these great leadership skills, there are
Leadership is one of the most important facets in organizations. In most cases, leaders act with respect to organizational culture as well as the codes of conduct that determine the manner in which leaders relate with subordinates. Leadership entails the use of effective communication skills to get activities done in the workplace and to ensure that employees shelve their individual interests for the sake of their organizations’ shared targets. It is the role of leaders to ensure that consumers attain high quality products and services by making certain that members of their firms’ workforce are fully motivated to work effectively and utilize resources in an efficient manner (Bass, 22). With the increasingly sophisticated nature of the corporate world, leadership should not be based solely on the desire to control and coordinate affairs within the workplace, but leaders should also exhibit positive examples and continually monitor the changing trends in corporate governance to initiate the most relevant guidelines. Competitiveness can only be attained when leaders are in a position to set the right standards in their firms and coordinate affairs appropriately by understanding consumer and employee needs.
Organizations cannot effectively operate without proper roles of leadership and management. Management is defined as the process used to accomplish organizational goals through planning, leading, and controlling people and other organizational resources. As mentioned in the definition of management, leadership and management are interconnected in that efficient managers must embody and be able to practice the skill of leadership. Leadership is the creating of a vision for the organization and guiding training, coaching, and motivating others to work effectively to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives. Organizations would undoubtedly fail without the hard work and dedication of qualified managers, and managers would be dubbed unqualified without the required characteristic of leadership.
