Quality leadership is essential today to achieve organizational excellence, stability, and success. According to Blades (2006), a good leader can drive an organization to ultimate success, while a bad leader can potentially run a business into the ground. Quality leaders are good role models that exhibit honorable character, and value an organizations most important asset, which is it’s collection of people that possess different skills, and talents necessary to achieve goals effectively. The intent of this paper is to share a negative leadership experience, and to make recommendations to rectify the negative leadership.
In the position of staff accountant, I worked for an organization in the health care industry. This non-profit organization employs over one hundred and thirty people, and operates with twenty-one different departments. The top leaders of the organization consist of a board of directors, the president, and the chief executive officer. The CEO is valued for his strong experience, and skill in micromanaging people. Top leaders of this organization believe that the micromanaging style of leadership will improve performance, and achieve organization excellence. However, micromanaging has had a very negative effect.
Managers of each department struggle with effectively leading and micromanaging employees. “Micromanaging damages engagement, saps the initiative of even motivated team members, undermines confidence, quashes innovation, and drives way top talent” (Earley, 2009, p. 5). The organization has too many chiefs, and the close monitoring of employees makes them feel discouraged and unimportant, which promotes low productivity. Quality leadership begins with an effective leader that leads by example with a strategic focus, and determination that enables them to connect with employees effectively, to build excellence, and to achieve organizational stability, and success.

Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
The emphasis on leaders being not just executives and managers, and that not all executives and managers are leaders, is extremely vital. Anyone can strive to be a leader in whatever organization in which they are involved. Bennis and Nanus claim that leadership is about character, setting the example for how team members treat one other (and in a corporate setting, their clients as well), being truthful and sustaining organizational trust, and encouraging themselves and others to learn. On one hand, it can be easy to see how many people in leadership positions do no match up to these standards of leadership. On the other, it seems a bit like common sense to be truthful to others and to effectively communicate with people who work together everyday. Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. With the increasingly sophisticated nature of the corporate world, leadership should not be based solely on the desire to control and coordinate affairs within the workplace, but leaders should also exhibit positive examples and continually monitor the changing trends in corporate governance to initiate the most relevant guidelines. Competitiveness can only be attained when leaders are in a position to set the right standards in their firms and coordinate affairs appropriately by understanding consumer and employee needs.
Leadership and management are two fundamental concepts which are involved in the effective management of organizations. Leadership in my opinion is a complex concept, which includes association of human qualities and the result of their activities. To be a great leader means not only following own visions, but also work towards company’s goals.
