For my group presentation of the act of courage I feel as I did the most I could with the the act we did. Throughout the whole process there were many good and bad things done. But overall, I as an individual did not to bad of a job in working in a group. Besides the little mistakes here and there the group and myself did a great job presenting kids and the class with the act of courage we had to offer. As we prepared a presentation I participated in making my own slide to present and adding all the information that was being taught to the children. Since we were talking about mental disorders and educating younger kids on what that means and how to act I put time into carefully considering correct words to use so the kids of younger ages would easily understand. So the girls in my group got together at my house while we created the powerpoint to show the 2nd graders. I put a lot of work into the slides however, I could not make it to do the first presentation. The only time some group members could go was during plc time. During that time I have to attend online class on every monday. But from the looks of things and pictures it seems as all the kids loved it and learned a lot from the presentation. The last thing that went very well is after my group members left the oak grove school the kids wrote very unique letters explaining what they learned. In the powerpoint created to present to our own class was also information that myself as well as others participated in. In my Teaching Professions with Field Experience class, we were to create two lesson plans throughout the semester; one that involved the use of technology and the other without. The rules that went along with the lesson plans were as follows: the speaker is supposed to act out the lesson that they have prepared and their classmates were supposed to act accordingly to what grade level the lesson pertained to. Lastly, during the presentations, the students were to write three good qualities the speaker or the presentation had. In addition, they had to write one wish which was something a student thinks would make the lesson better. For the first project lesson I constructed, I incorporated the use of technology to discuss the identification and use of monochromatic colors for the sixth grade level.

Corey, Corey, and Corey (2010) identify courage and inventiveness as two helpful characteristics towards being an effective group leader. Courage is defined as a willingness to be vulnerable, to be honest, and to be "emotionally affected by others and to draw on your own experiences to identify with them" (Corey, et al., 2010, p. 31). I feel that courage is something I have been able to utilize while leading and developing groups in the past. I have also received feedback from patients at the end of their inpatient treatment that supports my ability to be "emotionally affected" in a positive way. I was often told that, "I could see you experiencing the feelings I was talking about." These patient's were mainly from a corrections population and considered to be anti-social. They often presented with a flat-affect and an inability to be connected to their own emotional experience. It was very difficult work and extremely emotionally taxing. At the beginning I was really afraid to express my opinion about my team project, but all my team members are really friendly and willing to listen to my opinions. I really had good time while doing this project, as a communicator in my group, I made Google doc to let every member give their own opinions and that is also a good method to discuss our project online. Moreover, I designed the PowerPoint and provided lots of pictures to make our project wonderful. For our presentation, even though I felt so nervous and could not speak well on my presentation, my team members are really nice and encourage me a lot. For the team paper, I divided into four parts to discuss more details about our main points of the topic; at first I thought that it would be difficult to do this part, yet one of my team members used interesting way, Rock-paper-scissors, it is a fair way to do it, and every members are willing to do this. In short, I really enjoyed doing this project and had great time with all of my team
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. Tim Koegel, author of The Exceptional Presenter, explains that there are two essential facets of organizing a presentation: developing a structure that allows you to frame your objective and cover your material smoothly, and looking organized to your audience (Koegel, 31-32). I structured my slides and content in a manner that made the goal of my presentation clear and allowed me to cover the information in a smooth, logical manner. I also continually attempted to reengage my audience with key words and examples in my presentation. The mind of an audience member is constantly darting in multiple directions (Koegel, 33). My key words and personal examples gave the audience a reason to refocus on what I was saying. I was also successful in following the five components of a great presentation outlined by Koegel. I began with a purpose when I explained, “I am here to answer the question ‘What in the world is Google Wave?’” I followed this with an objective statement by explaining my agenda. The group couldn't seem to find time for us to meet and plan our presentation, the first and only time all group members were present to work on the presentation was on the morning of the presentation. We worked on it and at the time I believed we had agreed on our final product, I personally felt all the slides needed at this point was editing and final touches to make it visually appealing for the audience. I went online to the google presentation we were using as a group to prepare our presentation and was surprised to see a different layout, additional slides, and contents which were different from what we as a group had worked on and approved as the final work we were going to present. I gave the kids activities, provided the children with crayons and blank papers to look at the list of food and draw a picture of the healthy foods choices. The class was provided a copy of my power point presentation and resources. I needed the class, adults as well as children, to have a copy of the presentation so they can follow along. Overall this was a great experience for me, even though I must admit that I was a little nervous because teaching in public is not really my area of expertise, but it was a great experience and this experience will really help me moving forward. Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
I have learned several valuable things from this project experience. First, it’s okay to not know how to do something right away. Ask, observe and experiment. Doing so will greatly enhance my ability to do it correctly and continue to learn. Second, I learned that this can be an experience in frustration if I always try to not make waves. Sometimes waves need to be made to better the project. And third, watch for similar frustrations with my students and intervene before it gets too serious.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
Throughout the semester I became a more confident public speaker. The first assignment that we had to do for our education class was to introduce our self. I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it that weekend. However, when I got up to present my mind went completely blank. Throughout the course of the semester I learned what I need to have up with me when I present do that I do not blank on what I wanted to say. In the beginning when I got up to present my heart was racing and my hands were shaking. Now I make sure I breathe and tell myself that I know what I am going to talk about. So I still don’t talking in public but I feel more comfortable doing it. I need to work on being more confident when I have to present a topic. Talking to Mrs. Nealy after my mini lesson I have more confidence when I am talking about a math concept than any other topic. Throughout the semester my writing skills have greatly improved. The thing I need to work on is managing my time better so that I have more time to edit my papers.
