Before taking this Asian American class, I only knew that this class is an academic discipline about history, experience, culture, and policies relevant to Asian American. However, the professor, Stohler used interesting teaching style to talk about how this class relates to Asian American’s history, such as providing the PowerPoint and let every students discussing in the class or online. I found out that students could pay more attentions on this teaching style. Owing to this quarter almost ended, there are some reflections and ideas in my mind. I really learned a lot from this class, such as the first time Chinese immigrants moved to the United States facing lots of racial discrimination, struggling but keeping their own cultures and identity, and eventually successful in some aspects and achieve the triumphs. Nevertheless, the most interesting thing I learned in this course in that professor Stohler posted lots of articles and videos assisted us to learn more about the transnational history of Chinese in the United States from the nineteenth century to the present. He also created the discussion forum to let all his students discuss important issue every week. I think he showed consideration to those students who are really shy to talk in class, just like me. I read so many articles he provided to us every week and I believed that it is a good way to give my own opinions and also comment to other students …show more content…
At the beginning I was really afraid to express my opinion about my team project, but all my team members are really friendly and willing to listen to my opinions. I really had good time while doing this project, as a communicator in my group, I made Google doc to let every member give their own opinions and that is also a good method to discuss our project online. Moreover, I designed the PowerPoint and provided lots of pictures to make our project wonderful. For our presentation, even though I felt so nervous and could not speak well on my presentation, my team members are really nice and encourage me a lot. For the team paper, I divided into four parts to discuss more details about our main points of the topic; at first I thought that it would be difficult to do this part, yet one of my team members used interesting way, Rock-paper-scissors, it is a fair way to do it, and every members are willing to do this. In short, I really enjoyed doing this project and had great time with all of my team
Despite their being of the same culture, Asian American, the authors of the two texts have contrasting viewpoints. Elizabeth Wong, author of "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl", looks upon Asian culture with eyes full of contempt and sees America culture as far superior. However, The author of "Notes for a Poem on Being Asian American", Dwight Okita, recognizes how the two cultures blend together, going hand-in-hand with one another. Wong's perception of her Asian culture as shameful is evident throughout the text. She wrote that her mother "forcibly" sent her and her brother to Chinese school (Wong 1).

The authors are both Asian Americans themselves and their words bear fruit from a lifetime of personal experiences of being a viewed upon as an alien in their own land.
In this article, Eric Liu presents his life as a native immigrant to an Asian American individual. He shares his experience through his reflection of ideas and emotions. Along with his story, it relates to the ideas of people’s journey from adolescence to adulthood. Eric’s inspirational experience is directed towards minority groups who try to adapt to the American culture and lifestyle. His parents emigrated from China to America, before he was born which he later became exposed to the freedom and diverse society. The Asian American history is the history of the ethnic and racial groups in the United States who are of Asian descent. Spickard (2007) shows that the "'Asian American' was an idea created in the 1960s to bring together the Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino Americans for a strategic and political purposes.
In this paper I will be sharing information I had gathered involving two students that were interviewed regarding education and their racial status of being an Asian-American. I will examine these subjects’ experiences as an Asian-American through the education they had experienced throughout their entire lives. I will also be relating and analyzing their experiences through the various concepts we had learned and discussed in class so far. Both of these individuals have experiences regarding their education that have similarities and differences.
Then one day when he was twenty, he suddenly felt that he had the wrath of God on him. He realized that his sin was not forgiven, he was just doing good works and religious things to make up the difference. Even though he realized this, he still thought that his good works would still account for his good. He prayed and prayed but could not get anywhere. He even set a time to fast, but still God did not seem to work. All the while God was softening David's heart, David was having a problem with self-confidence. He was confident that the works and the religious things which he did were going to help him.5
They eventually found a building that was full of garbage and trash that someone had been putting in there for their own keeping, and they got the building for $42,000, but they had to come up with a way to make a down payment of $4,200. David and the others on his committee prayed day in and day out for this amount of money to come in, and they finally got that amount plus an extra $200 dollars. They ended up getting the building and fixing it up and calling it Teen Challenge Center. They eventually got people to come and work with them to help bring in the kids from all these broken situations, so they could help them. David continues to tell of how much prayer and faith that it took to run this kind of operation. David said “before September tenth, the money will be in our hands, I’m sure. By that Date, I’ll have a check for $15,000 to show you. I just thought we ought to than God ahead of time” (Wilkerson 212). Through out the book one can see that David is just like any other human being. He has his doubts, but he has one constant thing that keeps him going with this project and that is the complete and total trust in God and his provision over what he felt lead to do in by looking a page in a magazine of seven teens with a troubled
The air would always be humid and stuffy while riding the bus to school, and the slightest bump in the road would result in tossing up the kids like salad. The backseat would provide carriage for all the popular and tough kids shouting out at pedestrians on the street or flipping off a middle finger to the bus driver that would shout for them to calm down. I despised those kids in the back. They were the same people that made my life a living hell, while growing up and attending an American school.
The focus of our group project is on Chinese Americans. We studied various aspects of their lives and the preservation of their culture in America. The Chinese American population is continually growing. In fact, in 1990, they were the largest group of Asians in the United States (Min 58). But living in America and adjusting to a new way of life is not easy. Many Chinese Americans have faced and continue to face much conflict between their Chinese and American identities. But many times, as they adapt to this new life, they are also able to preserve their Chinese culture and identity through various ways. We studied these things through the viewing of a movie called Joy Luck Club, conducting interviews with Chinese Americans, and doing outside research.
For those Asian Americans who make known their discontent with the injustice and discrimination that they feel, in the white culture, this translates to attacking American superiority and initiating insecurities. For Mura, a writer who dared to question why an Asian American was not allowed to audition for an Asian American role, his punishment was “the ostracism and demonization that ensued. In essence, he was shunned” (Hongo 4) by the white people who could not believe that he would attack their superior American ways. According to writers such as Frank Chin and the rest of the “Aiiieeeee!” group, the Americans have dictated Asian culture and created a perception as “nice and quiet” (Chin 1972, 18), “mama’s boys and crybabies” without “a man in all [the] males.” (Chin 1972, 24). This has become the belief of the proceeding generations of Asian Americans and therefore manifested these stereotypes.

There are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture as an individual versus culture in your family, or even within your community. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs.
