Personal Career Assessment Reflection
Personal Career Path As a child, I can remember several careers that I dreamed of pursuing, an author and artist, an astronaut, a veterinarian and even an archaeologist. Growing up, I can remember being told “you can be whatever you want to be” or “the sky is the limit.” Now, that I’m in adulthood, I have come to realize these statements may mean well, but isn’t necessarily attainable for all. Growing up in central Appalachian, I wasn’t born with unlimited choices; poverty and the lack of resources made it difficult to reach the dreams I had as a child. (Dugger, 2016). The lack of resources, such as education, jobs, finances, and other resources, held my elders from stepping out of their trades that were passed on from generation to generation. I was the first in my family to successfully obtain a high school degree and pursue a higher education. This became my decision after witnessing the struggle of obtaining employment after, the children had all moved out, or the crops were no longer profiting. After seeking out knowledge from her and the assistance from the health science program, I had decided on a college and a degree. So then I began feeling out applications, completing any scholarship I could find and hoping for the best. I was accepted and granted scholarships for Morehead State University, my closest university at around an hour away from my home town. After becoming an official member of the Eagle nation, my next step was to attend Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) program. During SOAR is where I learned about a student oriented program that offered, tutorial services, peer mentoring, academic, financial and personal counseling to first generation college students. This program was called Student Support Services (SSS). Once being accepted to the program you are provided with an advisor and counselor. My advisor/counselor that was provided is still someone I look to for guidance
