A controversial issue in today’s society is Miley Cyrus and her recent statements and appearances. As soon as her Hannah Montana contract with Disney ended, Miley went a little crazy not considering the consequences once due to how long she had to be the face of Disney. She had so many young fans who idolized her and wanted to be just like her. Now, parents everywhere are trying to keep their children discovering her and wanting to do the actions she does. Miley Cyrus recently hosted the MTV Video Music Awards. This lead to the majority of the viewers to react negatively to statements she made during the awards show. For this assignment I will listen to the song “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus and describe it in detail. I will then analyze the song with Parasocial Contact Hypothesis and Regret Theories in mind and find two factors that would predict why other people might choose to listen to “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus.
First, in Robert Ebert’s movie review, he admires the acting, but describes the film as being unbelievable and silly. When The Last Song comes to mind, one draws their attention to the main character, Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus plays a rebellious teenager named Ronnie, who has pure hatred for her father, played by Greg Kinnear. Although this is her first movie not acting as Hanna Montana, “she does a good job of making her character Ronnie engaging and lovable” (1). She acts as an alienated teen by being distant from her father and the world, showing no emotional features toward situations that face her, including the “Meet Cute” between her and Will.
For instance Farrah Abraham, who in the show is usually seen boy hunting, fighting with her mom and sister, and nearly neglecting her responsibilities as a mother (find specifics). She lets her daughter “do her own thing while she does hers” Her life after 16 & Pregnant isn’t much different. . “Over the past year-and-a-half, former Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham has released two adult films, been booted from ‘Teen Mom’, appeared on Couples Therapy (solo), hawked a line of sex toys, and been criticized for not taking care of her daughter, among other things”. (Majesk) But the thing about Farrah is that she doesn’t regret it at all. Farrah can be seen as the antithesis to Maci. In recent years she has used her popularity to make a name for herself instead of helping other teen girls. Recently she debuted as a singer at the 340 Nightclub in Pomona, California, and was cast in the movie “Axeman II: Overkill’’, and is currently working on her “porn career”. It can be said that Farrah aka “the most irresponsible 16 & pregnant star”, and others like her, are one of the main reasons that 16 & Pregnant has such a bad name and a reputation for being the show that generates some of the most undeserving teen stars

Cyrus believes in self-expression and the ability to be who you are. This claim has allowed Miley to sell by exploiting her body. She loves being an exhibitionist, often seen in her public appearances. These acts have allowed Miley to move from one end of the spectrum to the other, from traditional to non-traditional values. She is able to rid herself of her childhood filters and now portrays herself in a more personal and scandalous light. She uses her new image as a technique to sell herself and stay relevant in pop culture. One of the most popular teenage entertainers ever is warping the minds of our youth. Appearing on television commercials, MTV videos, many magazine covers, and the radio, Britney Spears is taking control of raising today’s children. Her perfect looks and sexual appeal have mesmerized young viewers. Children and teens strive to be just like her. Although some people allow their children to idolize Britney Spears, I now see that she is an inappropriate role model for her targeted audience of five to thirteen-year-olds.
Unlike myself and many others, child stars have no playtime because they already have a career and an image to maintain and focus on. As children, we often act out our feelings rather than oppress them, but child stars aren't really allowed to act out or throw “tantrums” because it will bring tougher consequences to them than it would to you and me. By having to grow up in front of cameras and in front of the world, many child stars miss the benefits of having a happy childhood and some make up for it by delaying their adolescence until later in life causing them to mentally act as children but in reality they are adults. Furthermore, it causes them to make foolish decisions which leads to heavy consequences. Drugs and alcohol provides a release from all the stresses of growing up in the spotlight and Hollywood basically doesn’t shun upon the use of these things as much as the public does. Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan both have faced many legal problems and drug addictions that have kept them in the public eye or the topic of many conversations when addressing child stardom. Bynes has been known recently for her twitter outbursts, DUI’s and traffic accidents, and her drastically altering her appearance. More than a handful of people believe that when Miley Cyrus ended the show that she had formally starred in, Hannah Montana, she lost all control and abandoned all her moral values! She was a role model for numerous children and pre-teens, including myself, but many people’s opinions were changed. However, I think the exact opposite! She had just merely won her own voice and matured. Cyrus may not be a role model for younger girls and children anymore, but with her new views and actions she can now be seen as a role model for older teens and adults. She sets a good example for many by working with countless charities, working to fight for an AIDS free world, and she is also a role model for being who you are and want to be, in spite of others’ criticism. She inspires me and many others to go out, to get involved, to be yourself, and most of all to be proud of yourself!

Miley Cyrus is a cultural icon. Since the time she was fourteen the media has been scrutinizing every move she makes. From whom she is dating, to what roles she chooses and what she says. But nothing is scrutinized more than her performances; most specifically Miley’s performance at the MTV VMA’s. Miley preformed her song We Can’t Stop and along with Robin Thicke preformed his song Blurred Lines. This performance led to a huge backlash in the media. Every major new station covered it. CTV even brought in psychiatrists and experts on the media to analyze her performance. The next morning Miley’s news story had even beaten out the Syrian war crimes. The experts all came to the same conclusion that she was out of control, and a slut. Miley was most heavily criticized on her attire, and her interactions with Robin Thicke. Everyone was claiming that she was setting a bad example for young girls; CNN even went so far as to claim her “performance sets girls and women back” (Wallace 2013)
When it comes to the topic of the private lives of famous people, some of us will readily agree that the private lives of celebrities should be off limits to the media. Where this agreement usually ends, however, some would agree that the private lives of the famous people should not be off limits to the media. This argument doesn’t have a simple resolution because both arguments have valid points. In my point of view I agree and disagree that the private lives of the celebrity should be off limits to the media because celebrities have the right to have a private and not open it up to the world, but then I disagree that the private lives of famous people should be on the media because they are famous for a reason and it keeps the fans entertained.
