Britney Spears: An Inappropriate Role Model

One of the most popular teenage entertainers ever is warping the minds of our youth. Appearing on television commercials, MTV videos, many magazine covers, and the radio, Britney Spears is taking control of raising today’s children. Her perfect looks and sexual appeal have mesmerized young viewers. Children and teens strive to be just like her. Although some people allow their children to idolize Britney Spears, I now see that she is an inappropriate role model for her targeted audience of five to thirteen-year-olds.

Always seen in stylish clothing, flawless skin, make-up, and perfect hair, Britney’s image is an unrealistic goal for young children between five and thirteen years of age to strive for. Britney’s wardrobe consists of extremely revealing shirts and skin-tight pants. She is continually communicating sexual implications to her audience through her dress (Schulman sc.3). In September 2001 she appeared on the front page of both New York newspapers. As usual, she was wearing very little and was dancing seductively on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. There was no news accompanying these photos because that was not the point. The point was to advertise her near nakedness (Goodman 456).

Britney has been questioned about her racy image, one that is considered inappropriate for a teenage girl, but she ignores the concerns (Koeppel 491). Not even family members can prevent Britney from flaunting herself with revealing outfits. Her older brother told her she needs to put on more clothes, but she refuses. She says she enjoys feeling “sexy” sometimes (Tresniowski 100). Britney’s impact is everywhere and needs to be carefully monitored. Young girls, from bar...
