Do you like marbles? Lupe Medrano, the protagonist in ¨The Marble Champ¨ by Gary Soto, sure does. Lupe is a very determined girl when it comes to being good at marbles. From working as hard as possible, to being confident that she will do well, Lupe is bound to be a marbles champion.

To begin with, Lupe is a determined character because she works extra hard. Whenever Lupe has time, she pulls out her marbles and starts practicing. For example, the text states that she ¨left her homework in her backpack and practiced for three hours straight, taking time only to eat a candy bar for energy.¨ Even though Lupe is a straight A student that is practically obsessed with school, she ditched her homework to practice, and was so tenacious, she didn’t even eat dinner. For instance, Lupe became confident after she played and beat her brother and their neighbor, Alfonso, who is an extremely good marbles player. Alfonso even told her that ¨she could beat the other girls for sure.¨ As a result of Alfonso’s encouragement, Lupe became more self assured that she will succeed. Furthermore, Lupe shows confidence when she is not at all nervous for the big marbles tournament. As said in the text, ¨ Lupe, walking between her brother and father, shook from the cold, nots nerves.¨ I know from personal experience that it takes a lot of determination to stay confident before a big event. To add on, Lupe’s dad gave Lupe even more confidence when he told her ¨ You can do it, just think of the marbles, not the girl, and let your thumb do the the work.¨ Like Alfonso’s encouragement before, Lupe’s father motivated Lupe to stay strong willed and confident in herself.
