Self-Leadership
According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life. It also forced me to evaluate the key events and experiences from my past and determine how they have impacted me as a leader. This self-reflection process allowed me to discover who I am, what my values and beliefs are and what my true purpose is in life. Thus far, this process has made me more self-aware and self-awareness is key to self-motivation and motivating others.

At first I thought this was not a big deal, but I have learned from my research that it actually is. According to Dao (n.d), “self-confidence is the fundamental basis from which leadership grows.” By recognizing and acknowledging my level of confidence, I can take actions and develop skills to become more confident which will help me in leading project teams. I know that before I can be successful at leading others, I first need to become better at leading myself. Increasing my self-confidence will increase my motivation because I will have the confidence I need to go after my goals. This is how I will incorporate self-leadership into my leadership model while leading project teams. A high level of self-confidence will show in my behavior, my body language, how I speak, and what I say. This will give off a positive “can do” attitude that will motivate others around me. So what does this definition mean to me? First, it means that leaders who embrace a participative leadership style, values and involves their entire team. Second, it means leaders work closely with their team members, focusing on building relationships and rapport. Lastly, it means that leaders allow their team to assist in the decision making process, accepting their input and allowing them to share their ideas. As a leader, I would incorporate this style of leadership when leading project teams because it creates a level of trust between a leader and its members. In addition, this leadership style creates motivation and empowerment. When team member’s skills are acknowledged and their opinions are being valued, they see how their contributions aid in completing the final project goal and take ownership. This type of leadership also provides higher levels of motivation and better strategies and solutions because a variety of people contribute with different perspectives and ideas. Although the team leader is required to give up some control, I believe that the motivational benefits of doing so are greater than with other leadership styles. While there are many theories as to what makes an effective leader, The Self-Determination Theory shows us that allowing employees, the freedom to make decisions that directly impact the way they work gives them a sense of trust and self-worth. This confidence then allows them to work efficiently for their leaders who have helped give them this sense of enthusiasm in their jobs. There is a relationship between intrinsic motivation and effective leadership. Building confidence and self-esteem will turn isolated employees into passionate employees who are dedicated to their jobs, while turning them into leaders as well.
The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. According to the article, Why Self-Reflection Is the Key to Effective Leadership, it states that the practice of self-awareness and self-reflection will help us find out what are our strengths and weaknesses, our values and behaviors, and the ways in which we attempt on influence others. Self-awareness is the key to confidence and trust. According to the final words in the article, Good Leaders are Self-Reflective and Passionate, it offers suggestions for how to become a better leader. They suggest implementing knowing your strengths and gifts. Those you were born with and personal strengths you have developed over your lifetime. Live according to your personal values and morals. Serve as a role model, maintain a positive attitude, be and stay passionate. Continue to educate and improve yourself. According to the article, This is the one key trait that all great leaders share, states “that you are reflective about how the lessons taught in life can change the way you think, how you feel and you act. This reflection and the self-awareness that it requires is difficult and can make you feel exposed, but it is also necessary in order to become a better leader and manger.” This is so powerful to me because this process of self-reflecting can be as much as you want to reflect upon. It can up to 30 seconds or being hours and hours. If you facilitate this skill over the years, it will allow knowing to manage yourself to a tee. In order for a leader to be a leader, he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. The subject of personal leadership is widely recognised nowadays as it is often believed that successful leaders not only have the ability to lead other, but also know well and able to control oneself. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic.
