Correspondingly, I reflected on two distinct times that my leadership was disguised and not to the surface yet. During my high school days, I was the captain of the Track and Field Team. Also during this time I was a Peer Leader to the upcoming freshmen. As a peer leader I had duties such as assigning mentorees’ duties, giving out assignments, and making sure everyone understood what they were doing. Both times I was delegating and motivating my fellow teammates or mentorees’ to victory. Another time was the time I worked at Pearson Education in the summer of 2013. I was a Human Resources Intern and in charge of recruiting, interviewing, and training new employees. I did this process for the Spanish speaking employees and as well as the ones …show more content…
According to the article, Why Self-Reflection Is the Key to Effective Leadership, it states that the practice of self-awareness and self-reflection will help us find out what are our strengths and weaknesses, our values and behaviors, and the ways in which we attempt on influence others. Self-awareness is the key to confidence and trust. According to the final words in the article, Good Leaders are Self-Reflective and Passionate, it offers suggestions for how to become a better leader. They suggest implementing knowing your strengths and gifts. Those you were born with and personal strengths you have developed over your lifetime. Live according to your personal values and morals. Serve as a role model, maintain a positive attitude, be and stay passionate. Continue to educate and improve yourself. According to the article, This is the one key trait that all great leaders share, states “that you are reflective about how the lessons taught in life can change the way you think, how you feel and you act. This reflection and the self-awareness that it requires is difficult and can make you feel exposed, but it is also necessary in order to become a better leader and manger.” This is so powerful to me because this process of self-reflecting can be as much as you want to reflect upon. It can up to 30 seconds or being hours and hours. If you facilitate this skill over the years, it will allow knowing to manage yourself to a tee. This is key because you need to know how to manage yourself before you can manage others. My professor in Change Management said these wise words to me a few terms ago. This always resonated with me and stuck by me. It is so simple but so power at the same
A leader’s goal should benefit as many people as possible. A leader cannot gain power without showing respect and trust to those who follow.” The best example of Julia Alvarez meeting the standards of my personal view of leadership is from an excerpt from her autobiographical work Something to Declare. The piece titled “Dona Aida, With Your Permission” is an essay addressing Alvarez’s identity as a Dominican American writer and why she writes predominately in English. Alvarez explains in a very tactful way how her identity was shaped by where she was born (New York City) where she was raised (The Dominican Republic) and where her life was built (The United States) to an older Dominican author, Aida Cartagena Portalatin. Alvarez cites that it is out of respect that she does not write in Spanish, “ a language [she] can speak but [has] not studied deeply enough to craft.” Her words are eloquent yet effective. She stands up for who she is, “a mixed breed,” a “pan-American, a gringa-dominicana, a synthesizing consciousness.” I think a leader should be self-aware and always acknowledge how they have gotten where they are
I’ve demonstrated leadership qualities in various ways throughout my time at high school. During the drafting competition, my group needed some confidence and someone there to help guide them to victory, and I was there to help them. A group works together, but sometimes you need a leader. This leader will help facilitate and get the group to do what they’re supposed to do. I think I helped ease off their nerves and I told them to relax and do how we practiced. This paid off because we placed first place and each of us
While there are many theories as to what makes an effective leader, The Self-Determination Theory shows us that allowing employees, the freedom to make decisions that directly impact the way they work gives them a sense of trust and self-worth. This confidence then allows them to work efficiently for their leaders who have helped give them this sense of enthusiasm in their jobs. There is a relationship between intrinsic motivation and effective leadership. Building confidence and self-esteem will turn isolated employees into passionate employees who are dedicated to their jobs, while turning them into leaders as well.
According to the book, understanding personality is essential for effective leadership. Without an understanding of self, there cannot be a clear understanding of how others perceive you as a leader. (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014) In order to figure out your leadership style you have to have an understanding of who you are. This can be done by taking a series of personality assessments to see what you best fit into.
Marquis describes a leader as the motivation and the leading of the performance. Leader’s uniqueness and abilities are what make others to need to take after his or her way (2009 p.32). First, a leader must understand the self and others as the beginning in leading. As Kouzes and Posner stated “self-discovery and self-awareness are critical to developing the capacity to lead. And personal reflection and analysis of one’s own leadership behaviors are core components in that process” (2011, p. 13). In health care, the nursing leaders hold a vital role in inspiring, empowering, coaching, and supporting the nursing profession to engage with today 's changes in the healthcare. Importantly, the nursing leader’s priority is to advocate for the patients’ care by role modeling to the team on delivering a safe and quality care. Nursing leader who strives effectiveness in responding to challenges, will assess personal leadership style, personality traits and leadership competencies. Thus, self-reflection on leadership is the base for the
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
Sometime ago while preparing for the “Leadership and Social Competence” course, I was researching various articles on the topic of leadership. What caught my attention was an article with a heading that “A Title Doesn't Make You a Leader” . This resonated well with me because what I noticed of good leaders were their leadership qualities, the impact they made and only in the end, their titles. Most often managers and leaders are two roles combined in one and to make it complex technical experts are placed in such roles and may lack good interpersonal skills. As a leader, one is watched closely especially during a crisis. There must be good amount of self-awareness to recognize situations that
This enhances the fact that the leaders need to upgrade themselves as per the requirements of the organizations. As the business environment in the present time is much volatile in context, the leaders may have to face difficult situations at many times. This will lead to the betterment of their skill improvements. The self-awareness is one of the most important but least focused competencies for leadership (Thorn, 2012). Self-awareness is the process by which the leaders learn in what conditions they are good at managing and which things they have to still learn. It is always better for the future leaders and managers to go through certain self-assessment programs because if they don’t, the other people in the workplace will surely be able to see those weaknesses. There are some interpersonal activities that the future leaders must undertake to improve their activities. If the leaders do not indulge in such matters, their leadership skills may degrade and it might lead the organization to an utter failure (Ebrahimi Mehrabani & Azmi Mohamad, 2015). On the contrary, if the organizational leaders undertake the responsibilities to identify their faults and strengthen them, the result will automatically be on the positive side. The organization will get many added benefits for
An example of my leadership experience was when I joined the program called Big Brother Big Sister, in which I became a mentor to Faviola, a shy fifth-grade girl. I collaborated with her for almost a year, so we have many things in common. We both were non-English speakers when we first came to the United States. Also, we were both newcomers as we started school in America, and we both went to McKinley Elementary School. Thus, she improved her English while I was her mentor. To improve her English, we would talk in English, and I would correct her grammar if she said something incorrect. When she is around strangers, she is not as nervous as the first time we met. I influenced her in a positive way because she wasn’t comfortable around me when
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life. It also forced me to evaluate the key events and experiences from my past and determine how they have impacted me as a leader. This self-reflection process allowed me to discover who I am, what my values and beliefs are and what my true purpose is in life. Thus far, this process has made me more self-aware and self-awareness is key to self-motivation and motivating others.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
As a leader, I have to express my ideas and feelings in way that shows heart and thought. Even though this is a strength it is still a challenge. I have to continuously educate myself and seek advise on how to lead in a mature manner. When I first entered into a leadership role, my entire team was late to work. I was surprised by the lack of structure. Instead of getting upset, I had start asking questions on how we could enhance the schedule structure. This allowed candor within the work environment and that others can contribute to the growth in the organization. Which leads to the last trait of think win-win habit, abundance. It shows that we all can gain from this enhancement. With the schedule adjustment, the employees were able to have a
As a leader, it is very important you stay current with change and make the process as quickly and smoothly as possible. Adaptability is important especially in order to stay within policy and procedures for your company and to be a role model for your team members. Change can be a scary thing for teams because team members are moving out of their comfort zone in order to improve the team or company. With change comes dedication, team members must take it upon their self to adapt to change and as a leader you can help with this transition by being available and providing additional guidance and helpful resources. Practices a leader can help their team adapt to change is through coaching and encouraging. As the team is unlearning old habits
More often organizations are getting into bigger risks in the market with their leaders in nowadays economy. The resistance to change is a reason why organizations trying harder to keep earlier recognized reputation within clients and community. The theme of leadership is relevant for each person as it occurs almost to everyone during the lifetime or to those who at least were a part of a team.
