As a leader, I have to express my ideas and feelings in way that shows heart and thought. Even though this is a strength it is still a challenge. I have to continuously educate myself and seek advise on how to lead in a mature manner. When I first entered into a leadership role, my entire team was late to work. I was surprised by the lack of structure. Instead of getting upset, I had start asking questions on how we could enhance the schedule structure. This allowed candor within the work environment and that others can contribute to the growth in the organization. Which leads to the last trait of think win-win habit, abundance. It shows that we all can gain from this enhancement. With the schedule adjustment, the employees were able to have a …show more content…
My next strong habits were scored equally, seek first to understand, synergize and sharpen the saw. Seek first to understand, habit 5, then it is best to be understood. This habit seems to be a positive strength if someone ask me for my intake or trusts me. As a leader, I want to be empathic but sometimes it can be to the detriment of the relationship if listen is not my first reaction. Growing up if I did something wrong my mom would react first then talk about a situation. As I got older, realized that is relevant for a child but not adults. My younger sister had a problem, even though I am her big sister, I still needed to listen before responding and not try to fix it. As leader, I want things to go smooth even when there are fires sometimes it best to understand the situation before being understood. In short, it is not always about me. Next, synergize, habit 6, is creative cooperation, (Covey, 1989). Recently on a project I was working on our investor relations team choice to use the “synergize” in their PowerPoint. This was to bring collaboration cooperation during a merger. To let investors, know that our company can work better with two strong companies. Habit 7, sharpen the
Denisco & Barker, (2016) discusses the foundation of leadership and the four conceptual pillars that comprise it. Understanding the leadership is a responsibility of an APN, the following final question was posed to Ms. Gordner. “Of the four pillars of leadership; professionalism, inspirational motivation, interpersonal relationships, and business skills, do you feel that one is more important than another, and why?” She responded,
Habit 3 is Put First Things First. Personally, I struggled with putting first things first as I was a procrastinator but, I have finally conquered myself and I am no longer in Quadrant 1! You see, there are different time quadrants which tell you if you are a 1. Procrastinator, 2. Prioritizer, 3. Yes-Man and 4. Slacker. You need to always stay on top of things and stay in quadrant 2 but it’s not easy, so you must work very hard for it to become a natural thing for you. Another way to becoming a prioritizer is to realize what your big rocks are and what your small rocks are. In other words, take notice of what is important first and those will be your big rocks to accomplish first. Only then will you have space for all the small rocks. Lastly, don’t let fear control you, control your fear. It’s okay to make mistakes if you’re trying to do the right thing. On page 121 in the 7 Habits book, Sean Covey says “Winning means rising each time you fail.” This is telling you that although you failed, if you are willing to rise and try again and pick up your broken pieces, that is winning. This is a hard habit to conquer but once you do it, it will change your
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
There are several different items that I have stored in my leadership “bag of tricks”. The one that I find myself applying the most is the ability to be both stern but flexible. I am a true believer in the statement that no one is perfect. As a leader I feel tha...
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
Some journeys take longer than others, some paths are shorter and seem relatively easy to achieve; others are treacherous and feel as though one might never reach the end. These analogies complement my self-leadership journey quite eloquently. It is quite cliché to say, “nothing in life worth having comes easy”; this motto helps me continue and proves to me that everything I have worked for is worth the effort. Nurses give relentlessly of themselves; add being a wife and mother, there might not be much left over for anything else. Yet, we find a way, how do we accomplish it all? In what areas can I improve and grow stronger? How do we grow from a seedling to a great baobab tree?
In order to effectively lead and build a successful evolving team requires that you “think outside the box,” and equip yourself to find new ways to lead your team. It may require a scenery change from time to time, leadership training classes, trust exercises, or a fun day to restore enthusiasm and satisfaction back into the team. However, leaders must retain a special set of leadership skills, patience, and tolerance. (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013).
The three habits that stood out to me the most where Personal Bank Account, Think Win Win and Begin With the End in Mind, these three habits stood out to me the most and I feel relate to everyone most of the time. 7 habits of a highly effective teen has taught me many things about how the mind perceives struggling situations and confusing
Arthur L. Costa’s book “Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind (2008), Chapter 2. Describing the Habits of Mind” shares sixteen habits that human beings who behave intelligently acquire and display at times of problems. Human’s do not only behave intelligently in only sixteen ways and there are other attributions that can be added. Costa explains how the habits of mind are composed of many skills, lessons of past experiences and are incorporated into six dimensions which are value, inclination, sensitivity, capability, commitment, and policy. Costas’s purpose for sharing the sixteen habits is to explain these habits help people succeed in a variety of fields and disciplines and to show that people can think intelligibly by training and adapting
It is very common in this day and age to become discontent with where you are at in leadership. One of the reasons for this discontentment can be because influencing all of those around us is not an easy thing to do. If we are to not only stay content, but also excel in leadership we must keep in mind that ninety-nine percent of leadership does not come from the top of any given organization, but the middle. John C. Maxwell, author of The 360-Degree Leader, speaks to us about the principles that leaders can use to bring value and influence to any organization from any level within the organization, enabling them to do, what John C. Maxwell describes as leading up, leading across, and leading down.
Leaders influence a perfect working environment that motivates employees to adopt positive thinking (Suhariadi, 2016). Besides, leaders should instill skills and mentorship skills to employs so that they can realize their goals and performed towards achieving them in a dignified way (Sia, & Appu, 2015). Conscientiousness is also a factor that is believed to build firmly is the mode of leadership embraced by the organization. For instance, in the case of a transformational form of guidance adoption, both leaders and workers will be focusing to achieve the best through innovation and sharing. Importantly, great openness is encouraged in the directive leadership styles. This implies that workers become open with major ideas that can be used to implement change in the entire company. In other words, leadership can be used to improve work performance through a selection of the right individuals. This involves in terms of determining an individual personality that contribute a great advantage to their well-being of the institution (Isaksen, Kaufmann, & Bakken, 2014). An individual character determines their ability to perform have a positive thinking. Therefore, from a psychological perspective, it becomes easier to tell the type of people who can deliver quality
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life. It also forced me to evaluate the key events and experiences from my past and determine how they have impacted me as a leader. This self-reflection process allowed me to discover who I am, what my values and beliefs are and what my true purpose is in life. Thus far, this process has made me more self-aware and self-awareness is key to self-motivation and motivating others.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
After resting and doing nothing for a few months I eventually became gainfully employed. After a couple of months of maternity leave, I learned about time management and that it is one the most important aspects of leadership. When you are learning to be a new parent you will have many failures that you will immediately need to learn from on a daily basis. After one month with my new child I had a bad experience with diaper rash. I immediately changed diapers, baby wipes, and lotion, but after a few times changing those three items I was still unsuccessful curing this affliction. I had truly lost my way because ego and determination was fueling me but my failure was very unsightly, tangible and undeniable. My ego allowed me to lose touch with reality and not reach out to somebody who had a different opinion than my own. Another important thing I learned about leadership is to reach out to someone with more experience, not only when you need help but as an extra pair of ears to funnel ideas
