Everybody's good at something, you can be smart, sporty,or good at cooking, really anything, but things that don't come easy to you you have to work to get. In the story Marble Champ by Gary Soto the girl works hard to try to win a marble champion contest.
Through the first half of the story we learn that the main character, Lupe is not athletic. Lupe is obviously not athletic, for example, she scored a goal on her own team when she played soccer. This girl you can tell is not one of those naturally talented sports born people. Further explained, Lupe can't run at all. I can tell that sports isn't her thing, because I mean everyone can run. Lastly she is no good at any sport. You can tell she is not a sports girl. All of these reasons show
that Lupe is not a sports girl in the beginning of the book. In the middle of the book Lupe finds out that there is a marble competition, lupe decides to join. FIrst of all she squeezes an eraser for practice. This shows that Lupe is practicing hard for the competition. Another practice Lupe does is push ups on her fingertips. Lupe seems like she is going into this competition to win. Lastly she plays her neighbor. THis shows she just isn't trying to become stronger she is actually practicing skills. In the book Lupe holds up her hand and flexes her thumb, you could see the muscle,It seems that Lupe’s work is paying off. These reasons explain that Lupe is practicing hard to win. At the end of the book Lupe wins her first match, furthermore Lupe is Showing that her work is paying off. Also she beats another competitor named Yolanda. Yolanda appears to be a tough competitor and Lupe is a good sport and doesn't talk trash when she wins. Finally Lupe plays the other best girl she falls behind by a few marbles, but Lupe does not give up and she wins. These reasons explain that Lupe works hard to try to win. In the story marble champ she learned that her hard work paid off. lupe challenged herself and practiced with her practice Lupe learns hard work pays off.I wonder if Lupe will try something sporty after that marble competition.
The Only Game, by Mike Lupica, is about a 6th grade boy named Jack that is very good at baseball. When the book starts out Jack and his old team mates are very excited that baseball season is just about to start up again. They all are out on the field explaining how it looks and smells so great. Then the day arrives that they had all been waiting for, tryouts. Jack explains how it is great to be back at it with his best friend Gus. After tryouts they found out who all made the team and it was basically the same team that they had last year. This year was supposed to be the year that they win the Little League World Series. They had all the offence and defense they needed to go all the way. Last year’s team made it to the World series
The story portrays the hardships of Lupe Quintanilla and what she confronted as a child and even as an adult. She was told that she was incapable of learning, and was given a test that said she had an IQ of sixty-four. Which implies she wasn't even open to instruction as indicated by her test scores. Her instructors regarded her as though she was a child. When she was twelve she was put into a class with six year olds, where they teased her for being so old. When she was a teenager she got married and had three children. The three children were put in a program that was made for children who were not smart enough. Lupe pointed the blamed herself for all that her children were put in the program. Not long after that Lupe got to be worn out
Gary Soto wrote a memoir called, “A Summer Life.” In a memoir, being yourself, and telling your own story are all important. They are important because you don’t want to lie and say you like something if you don’t. Speaking freely is telling how you really feel and not caring what other people think about it. And telling your own story is very important because the story is suppose to be about you not anyone else.
In the essay of Mr.Gary Soto, we learn about his experiences about falling in love with someone of a different race. Ever since he was young, he would be lectured that marrying a Mexican women would be the best option for his life. Gary’s grandmother would always proclaim: “... the virtues of marrying a Mexican girl: first, she could cook, second, she acted like a woman, not a man, in her husband’s home” (pp.219). Being conditioned into the notion that all Mexican woman have been trained to be proper women, Mr. Soto set out on finding his brown eyed girl; however, what love had quite a different plan. This paper will cover three different themes Gary’s essay: The tone, the mindset of the character’s mindsets, and the overall message of the
The narrator wanted to be all he could be and strived to become the best
In the “Jacket” by Gary Soto, illustrates the theme of alienation by showing his depression through an ugly green jacket which he subsequently thinks everyone doesn’t like him for. In the beginning of the story the main character which I assume to be Soto, describes how big of an effect a jacket has on a kid in a school. “I remember the green coat that I wore in fifth and sixth grade when you either danced like a champ or pressed yourself against yourself a greasy wall, bitter as a penny towards the happy couples.” This is a great way to start out the story right into it they’re setting the point of how important having a nice jacket in this school is. From personal experience appearance makes a big difference at school, If you start to dress
Never really encouraged or allowed to play ball with the boys. One day on her way to wash clothes at the river Juana passed by some boys playing soccer, “the ball came flying her way and landed near her feet. One of the boys started running toward her to come get the ball, but Juana lifted her foot and then kicked. The ball rose into the air in a perfect arc”(Grande 122). The boys were shocked, at how good Juana was when she kicked the ball. This is a perfect example of gender roles, girls are to stay home and help their moms while boys get to go outside and play and get dirty. Juana, even with something as insignificant as being able to kick the ball, and impressing the boys. Comes to show that she did not allow society to subject her only to roles to be only for women or
In the beginning of the story Lupe is determined to find a sport. She has been trying to find one but can’t. Lupe had tried many sports before, but she had not found one. “I wish I could win something anything, even marbles.”
Diana is an excellent illustration of the many struggles of women to find a place for themselves in sports. On an individual level, defying societal stereotypes is extremely difficult. The buriers that the first person must overcome are often extreme. However once the first person breaks down those buriers, it becomes increasingly easier for others to follow in their footsteps. Diana's struggle demonstrates both how far women have come and how far women still have to go.
One reason why Lupe is determined to succeed because she never gives up. *An example of this is that she knew that she wasn't really good at sports yet, she still tried her hardest to get good at something athletic that she enjoyed.*Another example is that when things got tough she continued on and didn't break down.Like at the championship when she was going against the girl in the baseball cap she almost lost but pushed through and won.*The final example is that (once again) she knew she was bad at sports yet she still tried. Like when she squeezed the eraser to make her thumb stronger. This is why Lupe is determined to succeed because she never gives up.
The article by Gerald Graff was written to inform the readers that reading is a key factor of becoming a more intellectual person. Reading text that fits ones interests is a great way to get used to reading. Eventually as ones reading skills improve then they will be able to read more difficult texts. Reading is an extremely important skill to have because it allows one to obtain information on topic that are in and out of their scope of interest. Consequently, reading broadens a persons perspective on the world. Nonacademic interests can be tied into academic interests that are learned in school. Reading on topics that interest a person will eventually lead them to start reading more on the topics that may not have interested them in the
When Lupe ran into obstacle after obstacle in her search to learn english, she nearly gave up. Lupe’s story is a great example of being discouraged but proving people wrong because she got discouraged when she was called a retard so she listened to the people who called her that but when her children got called slow she got angry and it motivated her to help prove people wrong that she was smart and her children were too. One time when I got very discouraged was in third grade english class when i wrote a what i thought was a good paper but when I got it back the paper was filled with red ink from the teacher correcting every little thing. This really discouraged me because nobody else had as many corrections on their paper as me this made
The Boxer is about the Cross4Christ boxing gym in the Created for So Much More Worship Center in Baltimore, Md and Mike Mosley who is the head boxing coach at the gym was interviewed. Mike Mosley grew up in Baltimore and was fascinated by fighting at a young age. His cousin told him about the boxing gym that was opened in the Church. Mike Mosley was not a religious person at that point in his life. He wasn't someone thatbwent to church to praise and worship God. After a year of going to the gym, he was having personal problems that boxing wasn't helping with, so he went to a service in the Church and it changed his life.
At the beginning, Lupe Medrano beat Alfonso and her brother which they both are pretty good. Also she practiced and got her strength way better and also her accuracy. I know Alfonso is pretty good because that’s what Lupe said and her brother must be pretty good because he too entered the tournament last year. She got her hand stronger by squeezing a rubber eraser one hundred times, To add to that she did twenty push ups on her finger tips just to strengthen her wrist’s. And she got better accuracy just by practicing. Which is part of my theme never give up and practice and you’ll succeed.
When the movie delves into Joe’s background, he confesses that his father had pushed him to pursue soccer even though he didn’t really want to. After Joe’s career was ended by a knee injury, he began coaching the local girl’s team. In the eyes of Joe’s father coaching girls is embarrassing and not up to the level of coaching men. Joe’s father’s opinion perpetuates the idea that women’s sports aren’t as good or exciting as men’s. Although he’s clearly not alone in his sexist beliefs; women get less funding, less support, and fewer opportunities than their male counterparts by far, especially in England where soccer is a highly masculinized sport. Jules and Jess knew their only opportunity to continue playing would be to get a soccer scholarship to a college in the
