Live Healthy Kids: Autocratic Style

There are times dependent on the organization, where an authoritarian type of leadership is better than a democratic style. This semester I have begun working at Washington Elementary School as a volunteer with Live Healthy Kids. I have seen the leadership in the organization in practice and understand the need for a more autocratic style of leadership within this organization. Live Healthy Kids is a program run through AmeriCorps that helps kids learn about healthy eating and better choices. Every week I go to Washington Elementary and help the leader, Ricci Davis, run the program for one of the second grade classes. Each time assisting with a different activity with the kids. The first time I helped with the program Ricci started with teaching the kids the basics of healthy eating. The kids learned about whole foods, processed sugar, and what foods they should be eating. I helped this first week by helping the kids with their papers when needed and redirecting the children’s focus back to what Ricci was saying. The second and third weeks the kids started learning more about different healthy options. Ricci brought in different healthy options such as tomatoes, cucumbers, bananas, rice, oatmeal, and blueberries. Every week each child in the class room was able to cut a piece of one of the fruits or vegetables we were working with. By doing this we were teaching them knife safety. Most of the time, in an attempt to move the direction of the class autocratic leadership was needed. However, when it came praising and responding to the students, Ricci would offer support and advice in a more democratic way (White and Lippett [Page 167]).
