Coercive leadership definitely isn't my favorite style, but I must say there is definitely a time and place when it is warranted. Coercive leadership style when used in a qualified scenario could mean the difference between life and death if executed properly2. Throughout most of my life, I have seen coercive leadership used mostly in doses. Particularly in education or business, it hasn't been a style I would say is the most consistent used amongst most professionals. I believe this to be due to it's authoritative demands that come with the style tends to not sit well with most people. The time I experienced coercive style leadership to the core of it's definition was on a hiking trip when I was about sixteen years old. One of the hikers, …show more content…

This style gives individuals at every level of hierarchy a chance to prove themselves. This gives them a chance to bring a solution to a problem, to show their value within an organization. While studying for my undergrad, I served as a Senator in the Student Government at my college. The President at the time was a student named Ben Chaucer. I will say that his method of leadership was primarily democratic. The main reason being, he was always the last to speak. This attribute alone gave Ben an enormous amount of respect not only with the students in government, but literally with the entire student body. I don't think at the time anyone noticed why he was so respected, just that he was a likeable guy. He always gave everyone a chance to contribute and this made people feel important. In an organizational setting there is no better feeling than being heard2. To be effective with democratic style leadership it is important to hear what everyone else to say before rendering your opinion. Ben Chaucer was very polished in the working of democratic style
