The Life Group I attended is a multiple family group that meets to discuss the bible and reiterate the lessons from the preacher’s sermon that day. Feeling awkward being surrounded by people I didn’t really know and never being to a Life Group (Bible Study). The only recent experience with groups that I have for a structured purpose come from school. Having worked in a learning center with pre-school age children, I had to work with the other teachers to build, create, and implement curriculum structured around the Learning Center’s ideals. Within the small 3-5 person group of teachers at the center, I walked in a novice following those with more experience than so I could learn. After a few short months, I stopped into a lead teacher position that directed over the other teachers in the center. My future career I would like to be in a position of management or authority role in my chosen field. Attending the Life-group within the church I helped strengthened social skills that I am still developing and syncing to my new chosen lifestyle. Communication skills is another that I was able to strengthened due to the uneasiness of the whole process for me. It was a bit intimidating, considering I wasn’t the confident 17-year-old I am now. What made it easier was that I had a Link Crew Leader. In order to give back to my school, I decided to be a Link Crew Leader as well and after going through an interview I was given the position. Link Crew is a program created for incoming grade eights. We as leaders welcome new students to our school, make them feel comfortable and create an environment where they can be themselves. This eventually enables all these students to place all their energy on their education without having to worry about other social issues. I strongly believe in the mission behind the program and the importance of education and how every child should be given a fair chance at it as well. A good leader will take advantage of the tools around them, knowing that every building has individuals who offer their very own strengths. Involvement in marching band, field hockey, and various other activities has given me many opportunities to show leadership. My first leadership opportunity was in eighth grade when I became a WEB leader. While I was a WEB leader, I helped incoming sixth graders get adjusted to middle school life and find their classes on the first day. I also met up with the sixth graders in my group once a month at lunch and got to know them while I asked how school was going and helped them with any issues they had. In marching band, this past season I was a marching captain for my section. I helped the freshmen learn to march, demonstrated proper marching techniques for others, and gave advice to anyone having trouble with part of our marching show. I introduced myself. I learned that the facilitator for the night is actually a member, a 30-year sober member. I was asked to enjoy refreshments and was greeted cordially by present members. The meeting was held in a church reception hall and the room was set up with 3 tables parallel from each other. I participated in this group as an observer, although, I did introduce myself at the beginning. The issue of this group was alcoholism and how to stay sober. The purpose of the group is to be a support system for those who are struggling with sobriety and those who have been successful in sobriety. A few leadership experiences that I have had come from athletics. I started playing athletics when I was in the fifth grade and I still continue to play as a senior. Over the years I have had the ability to be one of the leaders of both the softball and basketball teams for my school. Being a leader has taught me to use leadership skills that I will need later in the future.
I showed my ability to lead and help teach kids by coaching 5th and 6th grade basketball all through the winter. I have also tutored people in my class after school if they were having real trouble understanding a concept in class, as an example two girls in my class were having problems understanding matrics in math class and I helped them better grasp the concept. I was kind of lost and felt out of place I guess because I can only relate to them through different situations, and I kind of was scared the whole time that he may call on me to read something. I was taking a deep breath with each person that was called. I think I could feel for someone that would be new to a group like this and understand why they would not want to go back after the first meeting. The people there were friendly, but they were only friendly to the people they knew from the group. The stories that the people told after each read section really kind of stuff with me because they really sounded like they really believed that they were not sick at first, but after treatment and problem after problem occurred they grew to the conclusion that they were dealing with a sickness which lead to them seeking help and support. Each person in there had a tough life ahead of them and are judged every day because of their past or what they are doing in their future, but I can say by listening to their stories that they have a sickness and need help just like a person with a physical disorder is sick and need doctor’s treatment. They have an addiction and need doctors help. I never really understood that until I heard from each of them about how one drink was all that it took for them
When things are getting tough and people are looking for someone to take charge, I want that person to be me. I believe that I was born to be a leader, because my best work results from when I get control in a situation. In a group setting, something could be as small as a playing a board game or as big a final project, if I want it to go well then I need the lead. All through my life I have held informal leadership roles, such as the ones mentioned previously, and have earned formal leadership positions as well. A particular formal role that I have possessed was being elected captain of my high school varsity basketball team. This role taught me a lot about how to execute with a group of differently skilled people all seeking a common goal, a major component in leadership. The other position I held was being a Peer Leader for my high school, a club that involves mentoring underclassmen in their transition from middle school. This experience taught me to direct a different dynamic, people who need to be taught as well as lead.
Where I stand with leadership skills, I could be pressed a bit further. When I was in middle school I was painfully shy. I was so afraid of what people would think of me. When I was in seventh grade I longed to dye my hair purple but I quickly disowned that idea because no one ever dyed their hair crazy colors in my home school and I would have been forsaken by almost all of my peers; so I stuffed myself back inside my quiet little shell and sealed it shut. I had zero self confidence. Being a leader for in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position would be my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities to my everyday life. Throughout this two year experience the quality that I feel tested more than others, was the quality of patience. Often times before I held this position, I found myself becoming extremely impatient with individuals and situations when they would not go the way as planned or as smoothly as I had planned for them to go. This position taught me that not all situations are going to run smoothly and that we need to make the best of what we are presented with. It also taught me that not all individuals learn at the same pace, the same way, and at times do not handle individuals close to their own age giving instructions on how to complete a task. With this realization, I found myself trying to find methods of teaching that appealed to all individuals as well as found ways of not coming off as trying to force individuals to complete the tasks the way that I see fit.
In today's world, there are many different ways to get involved in religion; various methods have attracted groups of all ages and races. One popular association is FCA or Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This particular group has helped me to find Christ in my own life. There are a lot of unconventional activities to help the younger generations get involved. Some of these activities included Death Week, which focused on death and pain, meetings about family and divorce, lectures to help people reach for their goals, and encouragement speakers. There is a great deal of fun incorporated into all the seriousness, though. We went on ski trips, did missionary work, and put on skits. All of these activities involved Christ in some way, and helped the younger generation to realize that being spiritual was not 'uncool.'; When I attended the FCA meetings, it was the one time that I actually felt free from all my problems. FCA helped me to find my spiritual self and gave me a sense of completion.
My long-term goals, on the other hand, are to return back to my country as an academician, become broadly a professor of Public Administration, specifically urban studies. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. I was in a program called Servant and Leadership Training; nicknamed as SALT or Slave and Labour Training. The nickname halfway sums up the program. Everyday we woke while the campers were sleeping, served when they woke, cleaned when they left, and learned when they were gone. We learned things such as how the Bible and Science are like Hamlet and revenge, and that to become a leader you must first set yourself apart for the masses. This idea is expressed by the brilliant businessman Ray Kroc. Ray Kroc once said, “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves”. This quote moved me to stay on task every day and to strive to do my best. My mindset encouraged my team to push past the unrelenting sandman that reminded us of our exhaustion, to overlook our aching muscles, and to see every smiling face as a success. I soon become the one that our counselors looked to for leadership. I was able to control our team in a way that they couldn’t. My ability to lead led me to run a store while I was there. I assigned my team members jobs, took care of issues, and open and closed for my boss. All of this taught me the importance of being a fair and stern leader; as well as contributing to my personal development.
