Throughout Leading as a Way of Serving, there were many lessons that I experienced and learned. By completing reading assignments, writing papers, participating in class discussions, and attending the class retreat, there were many opportunities to learn course content as well as realizing new aspects about myself. At the beginning of the semester, I did not know that I would be learning so much and that I could retain so many new life lessons in such a short amount of time. One of the most influential aspects that I learned about myself during this course was the Gallup Strength Test. On this test, I was evaluated on by answering personality questions and the results pinpointed five of my superior strengths. The test was online and required that participants choose between two option of what they though was more true about themselves. As I took the test, I found that some of the questions were difficult to choose between. At the end of the test, I discovered that my number one strength was strategy. I highly identified with this result because I enjoy planning ahead and being prepared. It also was apparent during our class retreat when we were constructing the labyrinth. As my peers and I worked together, I was making sure that the path was accurate and that our masterpiece was functional. In other aspects of my life, I find myself looking to achieve the end result by creating a plan of how to get there. For example, I was recently in a group project that was getting off to a slow start. As we were getting closer to the deadline, I contacted my group members to split up the work evenly so that we did not have to meet in person, but would still be able to complete the assignment. This was a great underlying learning experience of the activity because I learned not to have preconceived notions about what other people will do and how they will react. By being an active participant throughout Leading as a Way of Serving, I have had the opportunity to learn so much through assignments, in class activities, demonstrations, and the class retreat. When doing the tasks and taking time to reflect on the experience, I have come to learn that each aspect of the class had a greater impact that the original intention. In thinking about whom I am as a person and how each moment can be a new opportunity for learning, I can live each day in confidence in knowing that I can continue to grow as a servant leader. Being a course about leadership, I was able to learn several takeaways important to being a leader.

Outside of Academics, I have spent hundreds of hours helping my community and bettering the lives of others. To elaborate, I spent this time volunteering in church youth ministries, tutoring various levels of mathematics, and serving as Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) in Boy Scouts. Of all the service I have done, I believe I have improved the lives of others most remarkably through my role as SPL. In this position, I have had the opportunity to forge the future leaders of our community by instilling them with a strong moral compass, various leadership skills, and inspiring them to achieve highly. I accomplished this through a combination of acting as a role model and as a leader, which has given me countless opportunities to inspire and teach them through my actions. Now that I am going back to Fort Benning upon completion of CGSC, leaving my family there was one of the best decisions of my life. It has taught me how to manage my time better; a skill that always needs to be refined. Most of all, it has taught me to deal with and not just overcome, but also learn from failure. As an organizational-level leader, sometimes I will have to make the unpopular decision for the staff, but that decision will always be for the good of them. It may also be a decision on how I am managing the staff’s time. Most of all, it will help me in teaching my subordinates how to deal with and learn from failure. Therefore, I feel the educational and life lessons I have learned during my CGSC experience has already and will continue to make me a better leader.
Also, there are several things I have learned about myself during this course. Most I already knew about myself just did not know that there was specified names for my attributes. I have also learned how I can deal with my unique attributes to help me personally and professionally. A person is made up of many attributes, and no two people have exactly the same combinations of attributes. One of mine is always extending help to others even if it conflicts with my schedule.
Reaching any success will not be easy to achieve. Academic success, in that matter, to me, is meeting or exceeding the University's expectations, learning to the best ability, standing out, and building knowledge towards ones own vocational calling and degree. Personal strengths reflect and devote those aspirations; contributing to finding and accomplishing life goals and academic success. After finalizing the Gallup “StrengthsFinder” valuation, my top five strengths were determined to be competition, adaptability, harmony, ideation, and futuristic, in that order. As an Internation Business Major, yet to find my vocational calling; my goal is to habit those strengths, set academic ambitions, be extrusive, and have a willingness to learn new things of my desired profession while seeking for my calling in life.
The following year the next drill team leader was to be picked. I knew I was ready for it. The Senior Army Instructor, Colonel Tommy Palmertree, held an awards ceremony. He kept the team leader as a surprise until the end. Of course, this kept me on the edge of my seat biting my nails in anticipation. Finally, Colonel Palmertree announced me as the following year's leader. He said I would hold the position as Cadet First Lieutenant. I knew that I had finally achieved my goal. I had become a great leader like Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Armington and Cadet First Lieutentant Dwight Lewis. I would lead others and influence them in the same way as they influenced me.
Effective leadership relies on the ability to influence other and is important to the success and longevity of an organization. I believe that a servant style of leadership is most closely aligned with my beliefs. Servant leaders believe that “people can accomplish much when inspired by a purpose beyond themselves” (Economy, 2015). As an educational leader I will remind teachers that our purpose is prepare student’s for their future whether they are headed for college or a career. To play a role in the growth and development of another person is an honorable task.
Through the self-assessment instruments utilized in this program, I have gained wealth of knowledge about my strengths, and weaknesses and how they affect my personal and professional life. By using different exercises, I recognized new strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, I identified ways to develop my strengths and overcome my weaknesses. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) identified some of my strengths as the ability to get things done, initiating, and taking risks (Kolb, 2007). In the Strongest Self Feedback Exercise, some of the feedback listed my strengths as having excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being self-confident, a fast learner, determined, hardworking, and an awesome listener (Drucker, 2005).

I’ve always known to be the best follower but not necessarily a leader. Prior taking this course, my philosophy of leadership was anyone who is in charge of a group in order to give out instructions or order. In today’s society, the definition of leadership is ever-changing and is always being improved. As a leader, my mission is to treat everyone equally and give them the respect they deserve. This semester was very challenging, but my leadership skills have improved. As a leader, my roles play a significant part in the lives of my constituents. The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education. Fortunately for me, I became aware of these things much earlier than my peers around me. However, being aware of these things was only a fraction towards success.
