Abstract
This paper is a self-assessment of my nursing experience describing eleven nursing strands from Fort Hays State University undergraduate handbook. These eleven strands are leadership, care process, learning, professionalism, caring, communication, theory, lifespan, technology, research, and global health. This paper will describe how each strand has been applied through my nursing career or how it will be applied in future upon completing BSN degree.

Self-Assessment
This paper will outline each nursing strands and then explain how each of these strands fit into a personal nursing experience in healthcare setting. As a nurse, it is very important to provide proper care to the patient as nursing is a very difficult and fast pace job. Self- evaluation provides personal responsibility and development of the professional plan in order to meet each goal or strands in nursing practice.

If nurses cannot care about the people that they are taking care of, then they are not the ideal nurses. When caring for people, the nurse should always be kind, compassionate, and have respect for the patients that they are caring for and the people around them. Nurses all around the world deal with every kind of patients with injuries and sickness. Caring nature of nurses shows the patient and family that we as nurses truly care about their situation. Caring is the biggest aspect in the nursing field. Aspiring nurses choose to become nurses because they want to care for people in ways that most professions cannot do. Without caring nursing would not be the field it is today. The culture of caring involves intervening programs that help to build caring behaviors among nurses. As nurses become stressed and become down on their life it has shown that caring for oneself before others is key in caring for patients. Lastly, throughout the years many theorists have proven that caring has come from many concepts and ideas that relate directly to ICU nursing.

Nursing is a profession with different categories of nurses who provide nursing care. Caring in the field of nursing is a very important aspect. The nurse should always care for their patient on a personal level. I have no nursing experience at all, so I can not say that I have actual experience caring for a person in a hospital. On the other hand, I have been involved in many instances where I had to stick out a helping hand.

Nursing is a profession that I have always been fascinated with. Nursing is defined as "health promotion, health maintenance, health restoration and providing care to the sick and dying" (Kozier and Erb). There are five values essential to nursing, which include altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (AACN). Nursing is a profession in which the nurse uses caring as a central concept. Some other characteristics of the nursing profession include art, science, advocacy, and offering holistic care. Nurses use critical thinking in order to problem solve because every patient is unique. The nursing process when assessing a patient includes, data collection, analysis, planning, implementing, and evaluation. Nurses need to be able to deal with change in stressful, fast paced, hectic environments. The treatments and technology is constantly changing therefore nurses need to be able to make quick and important decisions.

The majority of our society holds the notion that nurses are no more than trained professionals, working for a doctor, who simply provide medical care for the sick and informed. However, what nursing means to me goes deeper than that belief. Continuing my education and working on my Bachelor of Science degree will help me attain my goal later in life, of being a nurse leader. Being a nurse leader involves lifelong learning and advancement. I believe treating others how you want to be treated is a good way to be successful in leadership. Everyone makes mistakes and it is how we learn from them that makes us a better person. I will be a nurse leader that is honest and encouraging. I will use personal experiences to relate to my team. I will adopt characteristics from various leadership styles to form my own. If the situation calls for a more autocratic role such as during an emergency or code, that is the style I will use. If the democratic or transformational approach is more appropriate, then that is the style I will lean towards.
Caring is a very important component of nursing. Caring is important to nursing because it is a nurse 's job to care for the patient and make sure all is well. If a nurse was not caring, than the patient would not feel safe and not receive the best care possible. A nurse, who is knowledgeable and confident, respectful and trustworthy, who has a personal approach for each of the patients and advocate for them, who can put herself or himself in the patients’ place, is a caring nurse. Of course, it is not very easy and there are many challenges, but if the nurses can work hard and always try to provide the best caring experience, they can succeed and be professionally satisfied. There is also another question that I couldn’t find the answer yet: how do we measure the caring? Is there any way we can know that we provide enough care? This can be the topic of my future
