Since elementary school, I have been fascinated with the field of astronomy and have enjoyed learning, researching, and reading about this topic, purely to satisfy my own intellectual curiosity. I began visiting our school planterium and eventually found myself venturing into research on complicated celestial bodies such as black holes, quasars, and pulsars. Though my school does not offer courses on astronomy, I pursued topics of relevance such as calculus and physics, thus enabling me to delve deeper into topics at a collegiate level which are interrelated to astronomy.

I always enjoy going online and starting a game of Chess to engage in a battle of wits against people from across the globe. While I first undertook this game as a time sink, it quickly became a hobby that I am passionate about. After pursuing structure to improve my abilities, I discovered my school has never had an organization for this game of kings. I would not settle for playing against matchmade strangers forever, so I founded our school’s first chess club and became its president, to enjoy my hobby more and also to teach it to

others.

2. The department of mathematics at MIT appeals to me primarily because of my profound interest for mathematics as well as MIT’s ability to make this body of knowledge both visualizable and accessible. This ability is evident through MIT’s opencourseware, which I have personally used in my pursuit of advanced mathematics. The tools of Course 18.013A (Calculus with Applications) have been invaluable for my comprehension of topics such as three dimensional vectors in Calculus III. I would cherish the opportunity to study under professor Daniel Kleitman who teaches this course and through his work, made these revolutionary tools possible.

I have witnessed this through utilizing MIT’s opencourseware, in particular the tools have afforded me the opportunity to further my understanding of various advanced math topics including three dimensional vectors which I am studying in Calculus III.

Outside of Academics, I have spent hundreds of hours helping my community and bettering the lives of others. To elaborate, I spent this time volunteering in church youth ministries, tutoring various levels of mathematics, and serving as Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) in Boy Scouts. Of all the service I have done, I believe I have improved the lives of others most remarkably through my role as SPL. In this position, I have had the opportunity to forge the future leaders of our community by instilling them with a strong moral compass, various leadership skills, and inspiring them to achieve highly. I accomplished this through a combination of acting as a role model and as a leader, which has given me countless opportunities to inspire and teach them through my actions. In these positions I had to always act moral through making the most responsible choice in every situation, I had to sometimes bWhen I first came into this position, our troop consisted of a bunch of rowdy boys who were only part of the troop because their parents thought that it was a good idea for their future. Over time I was able to develop the boys into young men bThrough a combination of role modeling and teaching, I have helped many young men develop a strong moral compass, forging them into tomorrow’s leaders. Through delegation, planning, empowerment and education, I have had the opportunity to positively influence life-long intrinsic values in young impressionable boys. These once young boys, are now

4. My family and my school are undoubtedly the two aspects of my world that have most remarkably shaped my aspirations. My parents, while providing a safe, loving, and caring environment, have never pushed me academically. This has allowed me to develop attributes such as an immense level of intrinsic motivation and a boundless competitive spirit. These attributes have led me to setting my aspirations at a world scale, to become a positive changing force in the world. What I believe is unique in this aspiration is that it is one developed from my own heart, rather than one forcibly instilled in me by a set of domineering parents. My school, while full of caring teachers, also did not push students to succeed at an exceptional level . This environment has provided me a medium to exercise my intrinsic motivation further and provided me with peers to develop my competitive spirit academically, particularly in the fields of hard sciences. In other words, by being able to mature in a caring environment, while not being pushed to succeed academically, has imbued in me a intrinsic burning passion to succeed and make a difference in the world. I believe the environment at MIT will feed my competitive spirit and motivate me further, while giving me bountiful opportunities to translate my motivation into making a true difference in the world.

5. The most significant challenge that I have faced was undoubtedly during my time scouting. As a leader in scouting, I had to teach and cope with a particularly diverse group of people including a few with major disabilities such as Asperger's Syndrome, which proved to be an arduous task. The principal challenge I faced in this situation was ensuring that every single scout was included, even during the strenuous time that is our yearly summer camp. This strenuous time presented a myriad of problems such as giving the scouts actual responsibilities for the first time, scouts leaving their parents for the first time, and scouts coping with the terrors of the wilderness for the first time.The true challenge lies in that every single one of these problems was amplified by those who had coping skills altered by their disability. To face this challenge, I had to grow as a leader through developing my level of understanding for all kinds of people and expand on my ability to act as an understanding peer for the scouts. From this growth, I began new practices, such as by allowing the scouts time to just cope alone as that is sometimes the best way and talking through the problems with them if that is what they preferred. My challenging experience leading these scouts, especially those with major disabilities, has given me the ability to work with people of all walks of life to collaborate and succeed.

6. I believe what makes me a unique applicant for MIT is a combination of my characteristics as a person and my ability to work with or lead a diverse group of people. My characteristics, such as the dedication, creativity, and contagious motivation, would not only make me a good part of your class, but would also help the class succeed as a whole. I have read deep into MIT’s mission of wanting to promote and advance scientific and technological knowledge to serve our nation and the world, and as someone who plans to bring the knowledge I obtain from your school to the armed forces through attending on an NROTC scholarship, I would fit well in your pursuit of this mission. I know my numbers and statistics are not perfect, I know I have not had a terrible life experience that would demonstrate my ability to overcome every obstacle, and I know you have probably received countless resumes of students just like me. My selling factor to you is that not only can I academically succeed at your school and bring the knowledge I receive to the world, but also that I can serve as a catalyst to the success of your class by serving as a leader, a tutor, and just as important, a good team member.
