I have learned many things in this class, some of them have helped me in many other aspects as well. I have learned a lot about myself and about the aging, and I am assured that after completing this course, I have improved. I have started to feel that my world and my preparation for the world have also improved ever since I have taken this class. Taking this class has taught me different techniques to consider when dealing with aging. This topic was of great interest to me. I was surprised to learn that successful aging is a combination of physical and functional health, high cognitive functioning, and active involvement with society. It was interesting to learn that these factors could lead to a lower risk of disease and disability. As …show more content…
Before this class, I had an idea of what my retirement plan would be; but now I am more aware of factors that can affect me when I am ready to retire. I originally imagined I would retire and spend my life traveling with my husband. I also feel like my interpersonal skills and cultural values will play a major role and help me overcome adversity that may exist in society. I plan to uphold these values into my later adult life and continue building my resilience, which in turn will lower my risks of diseases and increase my emotional well-being. I recognize that I am young and have a long time to think about my retirement plan, but I have learned that having a plan sets the path for my future. Also, there are several things I have learned about myself during this course. Most I already knew about myself just did not know that there was specified names for my attributes. I have also learned how I can deal with my unique attributes to help me personally and professionally. A person is made up of many attributes, and no two people have exactly the same combinations of attributes. One of mine is always extending help to others even if it conflicts with my schedule. I usually do this at …show more content…

So in conclusion, in this course I am looking forward to learning all about gerontology, how older adults function and how they feel when they are in those situations listed above.
Older adults are a very knowledgeable population and have had a lot of life experiences. As people age, things start to change physically, mentally, and socially. It’s important to understand the process of aging, so that older adults can be taken care of properly. I interviewed P.R. who is a 71-year-old male that lives alone in his home. P.R. is a retired coal miner, and is currently living off his social security and savings. He lives close to both his daughter and son, who frequently help him out with things that are needed. P.R. was able to give me a lot of insight about specific challenges that he has experienced in his life that is associated with aging. I will be discussing challenges that P.R experienced physically, mentally,

This week’s article, “Planning for "Successful Aging" at Mid-life” by Kathryn Betts Adams Ph.D., M.S.W., discusses a topic that everyone begins to realize is fast-approaching, yet the majority try to put it out of their minds. And they can hardly be blamed for doing so. The idea of aging is one that no one is ready to face considering how short our time on Earth seems to be with each passing day. Most of us would rather worry about it later, preferring to spend the time remaining doing all that we have planned for our lives. Not only do Kathryn Betts Adam combat this by openly discussing the issue we have all been avoiding, but she gives great advice to make this process a bit easier for all of us to deal with.
Diet, Exercise, Rest, Safety, and Health Support are five categories that can greatly shape a person. By realizing your current situation and finding a solution to any problem that arises, you will succeed in life. That is why creating a health and wellness plan is vital to your future.
In the next five years, I aspire to give back to my community of East Hollywood, California. As a dietitian, I want to offer my services to low-income families to provide knowledge in healthy dieting and nutrition just like I had the opportunity to do so with at East Hollywood Farmers’ Market. In addition, I want to be involve working with local advocacy groups such as ___ and to persistence health system based on the access treatment of acute conditions to disease prevention and health promotion like nutrition services. Help focus our healthcare system from sickness to wellness medical education. Furthermore, I want to develop my own wellness center that along with a multidisciplinary team out goal will be to drastically change families’ health and lifestyle. My ultimate goal within 10 years (20 years) from no will be to become the chair of LAHIDAN and demonstrate role model for the future dietitians yet to come. Providing nutrition services in my community and eventually one day my own private practice, I want to provide the resources a better well being of individuals to retard premature death, disability in adults’ unnecessary painful procedures, and decrease cost of health care. The shift from the treatment of diseases that lead to sickness to (preventative care) wellness health promotion nutrition services
Ageing is a continuing life cycle, it is an ongoing developmental event that brings certain changes in one’s own psychological and physical state. It is a time in one's own life where an elderly individual reminisce and reflect, to bask and live on previous accomplishments and begin to finish his life cycle. There is a significant amount of adjusting that requires an elderly individual to be flexible and develop new coping skills to adapt in the changes that are common in their new life. (Dhara & Jogsan, 2013).
To begin, the first key theme is independence. Gloria mentioned that one of the most important life lessons is, “you must learn to help yourself and get by on your own.” Regarding course content, this has come up in two areas. The first was in Andrew Jenks 335. Many of the residents wanted independence in various aspects of their life and used their own independence to help each other. The second aspect is in Rowe and Kahn’s definition of successful aging, which is “the absence of disease and disability, engagement with life, and high physical and cognitive functioning” (Whitebourne & Whitebourne, 2015, p.317). Despite the many critiques of this definition, the interviewee meets most of these criteria and credits most of it to her independence.
Aging and being old was dominated by negative characteristics and conditions such as illness, depression, and isolation for a long time (Eibach, Mock, & Courtney, 2010). At first glance the terms “success” and “aging” seem to be in conflict to each other. When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). It seems that successful aging means is not aging.
In addition to taking this course, I have learned a lot about my personal health. The act of writing this essay has helped me see the work I have been doing to change my life. Also, taking this course has helped me understand that we must take care of ourselves physically and mentally while we age to live a happier life.
Wellness is defined as “an active life-long process of becoming aware of and making choices to achieve optimal health and a more successful and balanced existence” (Ren et al., 2007). Wellness incorporates the spiritual, emotional and social wellbeing of an individual. When it came to thinking, planning and developing my SMART goal I decided to focus on my physical health as this was an area that I needed to improve the most and would also contribute positively to my spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and environmental wellbeing aswell. In this reflective essay I will discuss and reflect on this journey. This reflection will include why I decided to focus on this specific SMART goal aswell as how I found the SMART goal journey. I will then discuss my own view on my attitudes for health and wellness and will discuss what a SMART goal is and the importance of them in order to start working towards those goals and to positively change behaviours and habits. This reflection will also include challenges that may be experienced in relation to behaviour change. These may include time management and motivation.
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
I am glad to be forced to take a look at my personal health and to develop a plan for my future. For the last few years it has been a subject I chose to ignore. Faced with this assignment and the desire to do well on it, I am forced to take a hard look at myself and decide the next steps.
My personal health has been something I constantly think about. Whether it’s myself, my parents, my doctor, or others that bring it up, I’m reminded that I need to eat healthier or exercise more, etc. I know that I need to get better about what I eat and try to work more exercise into my daily routine, I just find it hard to find the motivation to go and actually accomplish what I know that I need to do. Especially in today’s society where we’re surrounded by a lot of non-healthy food, and getting access to healthy food is more expensive than the latter, it’s hard to make the better choice and choose the healthy option. I’m hoping now that I’m in college that I’m able to get better at taking care of myself than I have in the past.
