All of my life I have been overweight. I am currently 27 years old and for most of my adult life I have been trying to eat better and become more active. The amount of diseases that occur in my family startled me as I was filling out a questionnaire during my last doctor’s visit. My family history consists of alcoholism, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol and depression. Most of these conditions are preventable with the assistance of a healthy diet and exercise. I am grateful to my access to healthcare. About 2 years ago I started going to a chiropractor and he introduced to me a whole new approach to becoming healthy. Every week I was getting my spine adjusted and he would teach me new stretches to keep my back strong. As I started taking care of my back, I started feeling better in general. I began to make better food choices and started walking more. In addition to back problems, I have other issues that tie to being overweight. Being overweight has made me under active in my daily life. Because of my weight, I have back problems and I am unable to keep as active as I would like. My weight also inhibits my ability to walk as long and as fast as I would like to. I think the most inflicting thing my weight has done to myself, is the depression I developed. Being overweight my confidence is not as strong as I would like. This makes me feel unmotivated. These are all things that can affect me as I age. As people age, there are primary aging changes that occur. These changes are called “primary changes” and include: wrinkles, grey hair and presbyopia (Abushakrah). Most people are going to go through these changes. In addition to these changes, there are “secondary changes” that include: cancer an... ... middle of paper ... ...ble than the traditional cardio workouts such as running on a gym machine. There is great music and instructors. It makes me want to go every time. Lastly, finding the time to get in extra walks has been working for me as well. When I have time in between classes, I put on my headphones and listen to an audiobook or music. It makes the time go by and it helps me get in some extra exercise. All of these things I am now doing in my life are realistic. Sometimes I wish I would have started sooner, but I was not ready to commit to my health. In addition to taking this course, I have learned a lot about my personal health. The act of writing this essay has helped me see the work I have been doing to change my life. Also, taking this course has helped me understand that we must take care of ourselves physically and mentally while we age to live a happier life.
After taking this class, it would be impossible to see things, specially people or myself, the same way. Whether or not the intention of the class is to provide self-improvement information, it would be impossible for the student to ignore the issues, disorders, etc., identified throughout this fast-paced plethora of information. Of course what the student decides to retains is obviously subjective; which lead us to the application of the stress and health profiles. After the completion of the scales provided, and the grading associated, it would be hard not to realize how we can better our lives, if we make minor adjustments in our way of life. I for one, personalized a large part of this information, something I probably would not have been able to do, at least at the same level, back when I was a young adult.

Obesity remains an extremely serious issue worldwide. Once considered a problem for wealthier counties, overweight and obesity are now dramatically increasing in low and middle income countries (WHO, 2011). In American, the rates of obesity continue to soar. CDC (2009) recognizes obesity as a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. According to NHANES over two-thirds of the US are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese (CDC, 2009). Treatment for this illness varies; it may include the incorporation of diet, exercise, behavior modification, medication, and surgery. Since there is no single cause of all overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat overweight and obesity that will help everyone (CDC, 2009).
A child who is obese is automatically more likely to be exposed to a variety of health hazards throughout his or her life. It is estimated that “15 percent of children between six and nineteen suffer from obesity” (Lee and Sprague). A person who is deemed obese, is someone who has “a body fat percentage of more than 25 percent in boys and 32 percent in girls” (Lee and Sprague). Being severely overweight exposes you to more diseases than someone who is not overweight. Obese people “are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes . . . [from] being overweight” (Lee and Sprague). Some health issues, such as hypertension, heart attacks, and cancer can be obtained from being obese. To sum it all up, all these conditions have been the result of a sedentary lifestyle which is the most important factor that determines your overall health. These conditions that have plagued my family could have been prevented by living an active lifestyle and eating better. This goes for the rest of the United States, considering that more than one-third of adults are obese. (Win) Not only that, but 1 in 5 will die from obesity related conditions. This cost us over $190 billion every year to help treat these conditions. (Win) Furthermore, the rise of fast food has attributed to these numbers alongside being inactive. Personally, I believe educating on health and fitness is the best way to lower these numbers. Once someone steps down this road it is difficult to get back so it is important to help prevent it before it begins.
In the body-transcendence versus body-preoccupation stage, one must be able to learn and accept physical changes that happen as we get older, we refer to this as transcendence. If someone is unable to do so, they become preoccupied with the physical deterioration, to the detriment of their personality development. Although the physical capabilities are not the same in the elderly as when they were young, many older people stay regularly fit considering their age. The changes that began in middle adulthood are becoming more unmistakable by the time one finds themselves in late adulthood. The two distinct types of aging are primary aging and secondary aging. Primary aging involves the irreversible changes that occur as people get older due to genetic programming. Secondary aging refers to the changes that are bought on by illnesses and diseases, not increased by age itself. Late adulthood is a very interesting period of life. Since people are now living longer than ever before, late adulthood is increasing in length. Whether we say it starts at 65 or 70 years, the amount of people included in this stage is larger than ever before, due to medicine and technological advances. Obese children can have weight related health problems all the way into adulthood. This is something we need to resolve not only does it because physical pains but also psychological issues. When you hear the phrase “Personal Wellness,” what do you think of? Personally when I heard the name of this class I thought I was going to be learning about physical health. The truth is you learn about 8 different wellnesses in further depth, these include physical, mental, social, spiritual, intellectual, environment, occupational, and financial. While going through this class and applying it too my life, I have figured out that every single one of these wellnesses relates to another. It was surprising how much of the information I was able to apply to my life!

In the United States over seventy percent of adults are considered to be overweight. Maintain a healthy weight. "Determine whether you are overweight by checking your body mass index. Dietary habits established in childhood often carry into adulthood" (The importance) As a culture we know that cheating is wrong so why do we cheat our diets or our work outs. We often make new year resolutions but often give up shortly a couple days later, why? To achieve a healthy lifestyle all you have to do is look at the big picture, plan ahead, maintain a healthy diet, and exercise.
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
Obesity has also been on the increase due to over reliance on junk food and bad health lifestyle. This has led to various complications such as loss of employment opportunities to fields that require fit persons, and medical conditions such as heart complications and high blood pressure.
Today, more than ever before, Americans are bursting at their seams. This may sound funny to some, but it is far from humorous. Obesity engulfed my body at the young age of twenty-five, as I topped the scales at a whopping three hundred pounds. At this point, I could no longer fit into average-sized clothing, but more importantly I could barely breathe. I napped most of the day, yet never felt rested. My blood pressure was elevated, as well as my lipids. As a brand new nurse, I knew something had to shift. I decided to embark on a life-long journey towards health and wellness. I became a vegan, joined a gym and ever so slowly put one foot in front of the other. After a year and a half, I had lost over one hundred and forty pounds. Now, twenty years later, I remain healthy, and in excellent shape. However, most people will not take the same journey as I have. They will continue to follow on a path of self-destruction, leading to disease, disability and ultimately death. An example of this is my father. He passed away a year ago at the age of sixty-nine, and a weight of four hundred pounds. His body finally gave in to decades of food over-indulgence and sedentary lifestyle. Obesity ravaged his entire body, from his liver and kidneys, to his heart. I knew as I hit my heaviest weight, that if I did not make a change, my fate would be the same as his.
