Ivey Business Journal (2000) has once stated that "Executives and HR managers know coaching is the most potent tool for inducing lasting personal change." No matter how our business model changes with technological advancement or economic fluctuations, managers have been playing an important role in sustaining the firm’s competitive advantage by directing workflow and more importantly, nurturing their subordinates. Meanwhile, companies have been weighing employees’ coaching as an inevitable responsibility displayed by managers, and their coaching skills are seen as heavy correlation to employees’ understanding of company’s objections and satisfaction. If business coaching is so important in an organisation, then you may wonder, who set the …show more content…
As one of the largest UK company in the industry, it has been actively giving consulting solutions to companies from the private, public and even government sectors. I have assigned to shadow a Client Development Director -- Peter, who was recently being promoted from a Managing Director position of the Social Infrastructure team and is now in charge of 8 teams with more than 1000 staffs. Among these three eventful working days of the program, the most memorable part stands out as the coaching session for Peter. His company has outsourced the coaching service to an association that is specialised in leadership development and executive coaching, which is now responsible of assisting Peter with his leadership. During one of the coaching session at the end of the business quarter, Peter showed strong disappointment towards the 10 ongoing objectives held by his companies and further expressed his disagreement towards his team. Throughout the meeting, the coach, Tom tried to help him breaking down the main issues of the failure and guided him to figure out solutions by focus on the main objectives. The meeting was concluded with a constructive agenda aims at fixing the problems. This coaching section had broadened my horizon as it had enlightened me of the benefits and necessity of coaching towards building a health …show more content…
According to Watson (1996) and the research from Larcker (2013), they both observed that managers are usually defined as a lonely and isolated person. Larcker (2013) further explains even though those managers are receptive to take advice and make changes, only one third of the participants have experienced coaching. The Chairman and CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt made an advice and made an argument during an interview, "I was a CEO. I was pretty experienced. Why would I need a coach? Am I doing something wrong? My argument was, how could a coach advise me if I'm the best person in the world at this? But that's not what a coach does. The coach doesn't have to play the sport as well as you do. They have to watch you and get you to be your best. In the business context a coach is not a repetitious coach. A coach is somebody who looks at something with another set of eyes, describes it to you in [his] words, and discusses how to approach the problem." (Lashinsky: 2009) From the above speech by the Google CEO, it proves that no matter how experienced and how successful you are in the workplace, taking part in coaching sections do not call into question on one’s leadership ability, instead, it is a channel for the managers to gain benefits and improve their leadership development in different areas through various coaching
Ms. Powell is a leader who gets results. She uses three distinct leaderships styles. These styles are authoritative and coaching. Amazingly enough Ms. Powell is very flexible and able to move between the three rather easily. When using her authoritative approach, she is acting as an expert and defines goals for her team ("Authoritative," n.d.). Usually, authoritative leaders allow their team to figure out the best way to achieve the established goals. However, this is not the case, nor the preferred method as a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. Instead, Ms. Powell provides a step-by-step path to success that is provided to her from the Mary Kay Cosmetics Headquarters. These step-by-step guides are considered training and provide the requirements to achieving specific levels of professionalism within the company. Thus, these leaders tend to look for people to work with them, people who can mobilize toward a vision (Goleman, 2000). Ms. Powell displays this characteristic when working with her beauty consultants. However, another major characteristic of Ms. Powell is she recognizes that not all of her consultants will be as energetic or eager as she with regards to selling cosmetics. Therefore, she moves toward a coaching style of leadership.
AC 2.4 Recognise any potential barriers to coaching in the workplace and explain suitable strategies to overcome these barriers.
Power is based on movement. It is the ability to move ideas, people or actions. Power can also be defined as currency. Power is like currency because it enables movement of ideas, people, and actions through making connections with or influence others. Power currency is worthwhile only if the other person values it. What is valued varies from individual to individual. It is imperative a strong understanding. This paper will attempt to describe the role of power currencies in the coaching process and how an action plan and feedback aid the coaching process.
Using coaching, leadership is needed to support and praise them to build the team. The supervisor is still very involved in the activities being performed. The decisions being made are by the supervisor or leader. In coaching the leader tries to connect the team’s goals while trying to develop individuals into a team, and in the political framework it is called building alliance and networks. The manager is trying to build a strong, effective alliance that keeps the organization on track with the organization goals.
A big question in today’s society is “Will a coaching philosophy improve performance or provoke a lifelong commitment to sport, or develop character, etc.?” I believe that all can be affected by a coach’s philosophy and the way that coach does things. The reason I say that is because there are so many different coaches out in the world that make the game easier, but also crappy for players.
Manager as a Coach plays distinctly different roles in an organization. Typically, a traditional coach helps employees to develop their lives in various ways. Manager as a Coach (MAC) assists the staff to recognize their learning potential, ability to solve complex problems and attain high performance within teams (Ladyshewsky, 2010). MACs help in creating opportunities for employees to understand how they can improve their performance and productivity. They adopt a broad range of tactics to motivate employees to try out new approaches to increase their performance. MAC shifts away from the traditional hierarchy by focusing on constructive feedback to bring out most out of the employees. Also,

32). Ultimately, these leaders are able to tie together career aspirations with personal goals in addition to developing long-term plans in order to reach long-term goals (Money-Zine, 2016). Leaders who use this style provide feedback to their workers in addition to being experts on delegating assignments in order to finish tasks in a timely manner. Overall, leaders who use this style have a genuine interest in helping others succeed (Money-Zine, 2016). There are many benefits when using a coaching leadership style such as the positive workplace environment, employees know exactly what is expected of them, and the one-on-one style helps to develop individuals in order to improve their performance and to reach their goals. In terms of negative aspects of this style it not only takes time but it also takes patience in part by the leader. This style of leadership can also backfire if employees feel they are being “micromanaged” as this undermines their self confidence (Murray,
This statement confirms that the image of managing of BA’s change agents was coaching as they supported the employees to achieve the best results for the company.
“A coach is someone who is equipped to aid individuals or groups and organisations to maximise their performance in pursuit of their desired goals.” (Dexter et al, (2011) p.4)
It is important to remember that all employees, new and existing, have skills which may not be fully utilised. When recognised and developed, these skills could be of great benefit to the business. A good leader must also be a good coach. Coaching can be used to help develop these untapped resources, and to build on known skills. It will improve an employee’s sense of self-worth, and improve the effectiveness of a team.
Coaching via Coaches help all sorts of people move forward in life as they specialize in meeting the needs of a wide variety of people with their own unique challenges and opportunities. Coaching makes a lasting impact on people’s lives because the coaching relationship developed between the Coach and the Client leads to constant growth and change in the Client. The continuing evolvement of leadership requires coaching.
Coaching is quickly becoming a new profession outside of the team sports arena. Executive coaching is considered a popular intervention for organizations interested in developing their employees. To further enhance the development of executives, businesses and business schools are utilizing executive coaching (Gehlert, Ressler, Anderson, & Swanson, 2013). Almost 60% of major US companies are using executive coaches for employee development (Newsom & Dent, 2010). Executive coaches assist in identifying specific goals and provides the client with the tools, perspective, and the structure to accomplish those goals. While executive coaching is similar to consulting, con...
“Perhaps more than anything else, novels let us escape the prison of our skulls to get inside someone else’s head and experience a reality that is, as the name of the form suggests, completely and colorfully novel” (Aziz, “What Novels Teach Us”). In their classrooms, students sit in their courses ready to listen and learn. Honors students dig deep into their curriculum in order to reach their full potential. Books help prepare the students for future success. Reading is a teacher of important life lessons such as understanding other cultures, coping skills, empathy, and self-acceptance.
This was achieved by being a supportive mentor to my fellow colleagues. Waniganayake et al (2012) confirms that by coaching, modelling and being a mentor to staff and colleagues, leadership skills are enhanced and developed (p.152). I know I would be bringing my mentoring skills to motivate staff, families and the community to be involved in the day to day running of the centre and to enhance the long-term goals of the
