Coaching Philosophy & Objective
My coaching philosophy will come from many experiences I’ve had over the years with different coaches. I’ve played on many different teams and was able to observe many different personalities in coaches. So I know what I like and what I do not like in a coach. I am blessed to have been around so many coaches, because after college I will want to coach for a living. The best part of me wanting to be a coach is that I’ve been in the player’s position, so I will understand more than others.
A big question in today’s society is “Will a coaching philosophy improve performance or provoke a lifelong commitment to sport, or develop character, etc.?” I believe that all can be affected by a coach’s philosophy and the way that coach does things. The reason I say that is because there are so many different coaches out in the world that make the game easier, but also crappy for players.
For example, Phil Jackson who is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach has a philosophy called the 11 lessons. He’s one of those coaches that improves a player’s performance. He coached the 2 greatest shooting guard to ever play, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. With Jordan, he convinced him to get his teammates better, because Jordan’s stats would always look good. The thing is, they would lose and Jordan had no

clue what to do. So what Phil did, was created the triangle offense which would get him teammates more involved, but of course MJ would still get his. Before long, the bulls were winning championship after championship. With Bryant, he idolized Jordan so he tried to mimic everything he did. Kobe hated passing, he’d shoot so much. Then Phil came to the Los Angeles and joined the Lakers, and he put the star players Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Gary Payton in the triangle offense, and won Championship after championship with them as well. He would also have his teams meditate during practice to help them concentrate and be in a good place. His success shows that his philosophy must be good for players. Mike Brown on the other hand who coached LeBron James for a while was thought to not be that bad of a coach. He reason why is because, LeBron is the type of player that doesn’t need a great coach because he is himself. However, when LeBron left he began to get exposed. He really got exposed when he went to the Lakers and had one of the worst records in the league. Many young players who he coached have just disappeared from the NBA. Players like Larry Hughes, Delonte West, and Antawn Jamison have fallen off of the face of the NBA. He is currently trying to learn a philosophy that works under Gregg Popovich who is a highly respected coach. I believe many different philosophies would work on different teams, many people respond differently. It’s a coach’s job to figure out what works. I feel that if something is working, then there is no point in changing it. For example, if the players I have in are playing unbelievably well, then I will leave them in until they aren’t. Same goes for a single player, if that player is doing well and they usually don’t play, then I will definitely reward them by leaving that person in. That is something I’ve learned to do while observing many coach’s over the years. Some coach’s I’ve had weren’t willing to give others on the team a chance to prove their selves no matter how well they would play in practice. Something else I would include in my coaching techniques is to make sure I treat everyone on my team the same. No matter how much better a player on my team is than another, I will make sure the same rules apply to everyone. I have been on teams that I have been favored and haven’t been. All being favored does is hype your head, it won’t get you better than what you already are. It makes you not work as hard because you think you have it all already. I will not accept slacking while I am a coach, my team will work hard together. Having a team that does that alone would make me proud. I’m also the type of coach that will keep calm when talking to my players. I’m not a fan of getting in people’s faces spitting, and screaming at them. Coaching and just being flat out disrespectful are two completely different things. I have experienced both a calm and crazy coach, and I definitely responded and played better with the calm coaches. As I grow as a person and athlete, I will continue to observe coaches and the way their players respond to them.
As an athlete I will continue to show my coaches the up most respect. Just this year, I have learned that being a coach is a tough job and that a lot of hours are put in to it. I never realized it until I came to the gym late at night and my coach was still here getting things prepared for our next game. As I observe, I will hopefully learn some different strategies I can use one day when I’m a coach one day. It will help me in the long run because when I become a coach, I plan to be the best coach I can be with many winning
records.
In order to see outcomes in this area of improvement, we as coaches must re-evaluate not only our athletes, but, in addition, our coaching styles. Of course, we all want to tell ourselves that we are great coaches and it's the athletes who are not following direction...
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
This constitutes the single largest barrier to successful coaching. Common barriers to
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). The philosophy should also contain written documents of implemented strategies and techniques, so that the coach will know what to improve upon season by season
The effectiveness of the coaching method depends completely on the coach, his personality, and the needs of the student-athletes. Each program and institution is unique and has different institutional goals and objectives that attract different student-athletes compared to other colleges or universities (Koivula, Hassmen, Fallby, 2002).
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a successful track coach and coach your protégés to a successful season? Through job shadowing, personal experience, and research, I have found out just how much hard work goes into coaching.
Moreover, from his school days, he developed his spiritual aspects in order to develop confidence towards performing his diverse activities with better zeal and success. Furthermore, it has been apparently observed that in his career life as a basketball player, he developed team-oriented style at large. Additionally, he possessed certain inbuilt capabilities that include confidence, focused and self-possessed along with consistent attitude. In this respect, it can be affirmed that the aforementioned traits assisted in developing his personal coaching philosophy. Respectively, the coaching philosophy of Phil Jackson is based on certain principles such as developing objectives, building natural interrelation with the players, developing team spirit and managing stress among others (NBA Media Ventures, LLC, 2013).
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will”. Being a football coach requires someone who can be a great communicator. This person needs to understand communication on both sides an individual can not just demand that it's a one way street where you talk and athletes listen. The career of coaching requires history of the game knowledge of the game, extensive education, and positive and negatives aspects of the game.
As a coach you do fail sometimes and that's what is difficult but Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded.” I believe that this goes for coaching as well because you are going to fail over and over again and you will soon see that those failures are actually your accomplishments. No one said life was easy but coaching can be easy and it’s a way to connect with players and others and bring out the best in people and show that people can work together and accomplish many things no matter how difficult or hard it is and it can be fun and thrilling at the same
Growing up I was extremely blessed having an incredible coach at every level of sport I participated in. From those experiences I know how much a coach can make a difference in your life. For that reason my dream job is coaching college basketball at any division. It does not matter to me what level, because kids at the D-3 level need just as much guidance and help as student athletes at the D-1 level. During my coaching career I hope to blend two leadership styles in particular together in order to make my athletes better men, but also to keep the game they love fun to play. I feel by taking the Charismatic Leadership style’s enthusiasm and loyalty and mixing it with a Transformational Leaders innovation and emphasis on change, I can be an extremely effective and power leader for my student athletes.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
I expect athletes to work on improving themselves using the program that I will develop for them. I believe that I must lead by example. I also believe that if I am not improving as a coach, then I am holding our players and program back. I will make sure I have at least two assistant coaches. I will develop an improvement program for myself and for my assistant coaches at the end of each season.
What do people have to do to become a teacher , coach or both? Let me take you back in time. Back then the learned men of ancient times, by default became the teachers. Priests and prophets taught children of the wealthy and noble, the skills to take up their roles as leaders and businessmen. So in other words, people who had knowledge they passed it down. After that knowledge being passed down those people would tell someone else and so on. Back then people with power like priests and king , told people things and people trusted them and of course they listened to them.
