In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
As a nurse, I feel that at many times I am placed in a situation, where I need to use my leadership skills in order to provide efficient care by managing the limited time. According to CNO guideline, leadership is a process of influencing people to achieve common goals. It requires self-awareness and commitment towards profession, ability to delegate, manage time and to communicate effectively within the health care professionals.
Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Leaders may hold authority attributed to them by the group, substantiated by how they are regarded, whether or not they have positional authority. In contrast to management, where the goal is to provide order through control, leadership is concerned with producing change through transformation and practical adjustments (Northouse, 2013). Because of the nature of nursing, its obligation to promoting health and healing of people, nursing leadership concentrates change efforts based on human needs and concurrently ponders the needs of administrations largely because they understand the interrelatedness of the two influences.
Marquis describes a leader as the motivation and the leading of the performance. Leader’s uniqueness and abilities are what make others to need to take after his or her way (2009 p.32). First, a leader must understand the self and others as the beginning in leading. As Kouzes and Posner stated “self-discovery and self-awareness are critical to developing the capacity to lead. And personal reflection and analysis of one’s own leadership behaviors are core components in that process” (2011, p. 13). In health care, the nursing leaders hold a vital role in inspiring, empowering, coaching, and supporting the nursing profession to engage with today 's changes in the healthcare. Importantly, the nursing leader’s priority is to advocate for the patients’ care by role modeling to the team on delivering a safe and quality care. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, and Robert S. Kaplan has advice and ideas that can be applied to any leadership setting. Giving and receiving timely and constructive feedback, managing your time in an efficient manner, keeping your cool under pressure, and having a clear vision and set of priorities for your company are all things that need to be done in a hospital setting. Transformational Leadership Overtime people have developed many ways to lead, some ways are more effective than others. What makes one more effective than the other and how do we perceive leadership? Transformational leadership is an effective form of leadership and will be discussed in this paper along with the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This paper will also discuss the role, along with the strategies of the transformational leader in nursing and how it can truly be implemented by the highly effective nurse. Transformational Leadership is based on a leader possessing key concepts of empowering others, foresight, and is committed to elevating the people of the facility (Marquis, 2009).
First, clear vision of goal or destination. Leader must have an obvious goal and also the farther vision towards it. The possession of clear vision will act as a compass which is important to reach the objectives. Second, strategy to achieve the goal. In the journey of process, leader will find a lot of hardships or problems which interfere the smoothness of the journey. In this case, leader has to be ready in order to cope up with those obstacles. Even before the journey begin, leader also has to think about the obstacles which will appear and prepare himself or herself with preventive solutions. Once my teacher said “leader has to consider five steps farther than the others”. Third, the team. Leader cannot do the responsibility by himself or herself. Someone is needed in order to work together, divide the burdens in order to reaching the goal. The leader has to make a constructive relationship with all the team members. Those three things are important and related to each other. In other words, if one of those three things is gone, the final goal will not be accomplished. Leadership is learned to make sure those three things are completed. Leadership will help leaders to make the vision of goal clearer.
