Transformational Leadership
Overtime people have developed many ways to lead, some ways are more effective than others. What makes one more effective than the other and how do we perceive leadership? Transformational leadership is an effective form of leadership and will be discussed in this paper along with the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This paper will also discuss the role, along with the strategies of the transformational leader in nursing and how it can truly be implemented by the highly effective nurse. The only exposure to the healthcare field has been through my didactic and clinical experiences. I do have over ten years of management experience with different organizations within that time frame. What I have found out through this time is that management is not the same as leadership. It has come to my attention that any monkey in a suit can become a manager and enforce rules from the powers that be. Leadership is something that is inside an individual, but it must be cultivated and self-nourished. Leaders must have the understanding that the investment of development, time, and education must start with them. This was made completely apparent to me upon reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. All seven habits that Covey discusses always come back to the individual for his or her own self-improvement. This book coincides perfectly with the development of the transformational leader. As a Bachelor of Science Nursing graduate many facilities have the understanding this should imply integration of leadership capabilities. Personally I would like to apply transformational leadership when leading my care teams. It is my true belief that everyone always wants to improve. As a floor nurse I owe it to everyone on that unit to find out what their goals are and also the goals of the unit. We then must cohesively develop to reach these goals and find where our gaps are present. Once this information is acquired, I can then help with development of gaps. This is when true transformational leadership will be present in my leadership role. I believe once this is present it will be well apparent in metrics, patient outcomes, staff morale, turnover and the overall environment of the
