An organization’s mission, vision, and philosophy determine the goals the company seeks to achieve and describes the structures used to reach objectives. The mission statement speaks to the relationship the organization has with the community by linking its actions to the people it serves. The vision statement gives details of the organization’s purpose and values to employees and customers. The philosophy defines principles and overall beliefs that guide the organization in reaching its goals (Current Nursing, n.d.). For this paper, I will describe the mission and vision statements of my organization, discuss how my role supports the mission, discuss pros and cons of the nursing department’s structure, and give examples of how nursing could …show more content…

The first change leaders should make is including all units in the shared governance structure. Currently, outpatient units do not participate, so those nurses have no voice in decision-making on their units, and there’s no structure for communication between them and the shared governance councils. Secondly, organizational leaders should ensure that unit leadership chairs attend training classes that teach how to effectively function in their new role. Education should include how to lead the ULC meetings because the better prepared the chairperson is, the more effective and constructive the meetings will be. Lastly, all staff should be included in the shared governance structure. At this time, attendance at unit meetings is voluntary and not having access to those ideas and perspectives negatively impacts the …show more content…

Support of a decentralized organizational philosophy can transform organizations, staff, and patients because it affects the culture, improves staff outlook, promotes personal involvement and encourages staff to reach higher levels of quality care. In my organization, nursing leaders should strive to involve all patient care units and staff in shared governance, educate unit leadership council chairs, and build on the positive aspects by empowering, motivating and developing staff members. These actions will increase creativity, responsibility, intellectual stimulation, and well-being.
