Innocence versus Sexual Awakeming The transition from childhood to adulthood is a complex but universal passage. Both Katherine Mansfield's "The Wind Blows" and D.H. Lawrence's The Virgin and the Gipsy embody adolescent angst in their characterization. Matilda and Yvette search for meaning beyond the lives they perceive they are condemned to lead. Both bring about greater understanding of the struggle between a young girl's struggle of innocence versus sexuality. In similar uses of metaphor and imagery the stories tell the tale of social convention, romanticism and sexual awakening. The Virgin and the Gipsy is written with little surprise or subtlety in it, as is suggested by the title. Lawrence has a theme of human connectedness throughout the story. However there is force that threatens the conventional existence of Yvette. Yvette is a young girl that in her own way was rescued by a dark manly figure from outside her world. However the stories intrigue is the intensity and conviction written by Lawrence. We never learn about Yvette "which they don't and would never see" (Lawrence 75). "The Wind" goes through little in the way of dramatic action. Our understanding of Matilda comes with her frustration of seemingly meaningless chores and a simple routine to wistfully thinking of places far away. The characterization from The Virgin and the Gipsy is more complex than that of Mansfield's short story. The denial of the two protagonists' emotions lead to the eventual loss of childlike youth and spontaneity "Her young soul knew the wisdom of it"(145). Only slightly more expansive is the tale of Yvette which lasts only two seasons, the latter spans only a day with a brief reflection in the end. Through thoughts a... ... middle of paper ... .... From Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the blockbuster movie Titanic the struggle against social convention, class structure and awakening desire is universal. Virgins and gypsies are both fascinating to our society by reason of depleting numbers. The sexual awakening that occurs in Mansfield and Lawrence depictions occurs through different means but conveys the same message. Every individual goes through a natural right of passage from childhood to adulthood. With the change of adolescence come sexual desire and maturity. You seem to have disappeared.(pg.263)" In Minot's story Lust you are play by play given the sequential events of a fifteen year old girls sex life. As portrayed by her thoughts after sex in this passage the girl is overly casual about the act of sex and years ahead of her time in her awareness of her actions. Minot's unique way of revealing to the reader the wild excursions done by this young promiscuous adolescent proves that she devalues the sacred act of sex. Furthermore, the manner in which the author illustrates to the reader these acts symbolizes the likeness of a list. Whether it's a list of things to do on the weekend or perhaps items of groceries which need to be picked up, her lust for each one of the boys in the story is about as well thought out and meaningful as each item which has carelessly and spontaneously been thrown on to a sheet of paper as is done in making a list. This symbolistic writing style is used to show how meaningless these relationships were but the deeper meaning of why she acted the way she did is revealed throughout the story. Minot cleverly displayed these catalysts in between the listings of her relationships.
The setting of a novel aids in the portrayal of the central theme of the work. Without a specific place and social environment, the characters are just there, with no reason behind any of their actions. The Age of Influence centers around the Old New York society during the 1870’s. Most of the characters are wealthy upper class citizens with a strict code to follow. The protagonist, Newland Archer, lives in a constant state of fear of being excluded from society for his actions. Archer’s character is affected by standard New York conventions as well as the pressure to uphold his place in society, both of which add to Wharton’s theme of dissatisfaction.
Both Visions of the Daughters of Albion by William Blake and The History of Mary Prince by Thomas Pringle makes a powerful statement about the current social conditions for women in their days. The value of women maintaining their virginity became highly important. The words of Prince and Oothoon exemplifies the significance of the woman’s voice. Both these characters show that women can not be seen as objects nor can they be downgraded in society.

The protagonist and narrator of the novel, Jake was left impotent from an injury incurred while serving with the Italian Front in World War 1. His inability to consummate his love for the insatiable Brett Ashley, and the sterile social backdrop of Paris provide a striking similarity to the Arthurian Fisher King motif of a man generatively impaired, and his kingdom thusly sterile. Growing up and becoming mature can be an intimidating experience; it is difficult to let go of one’s childhood and embrace the adult world. For some people, this transition from youthfulness to maturity can be much more difficult than for others. These people often try to hold on to their childhood as long as they can. Unfortunately, life is not so simple. One cannot spend their entire life running from the responsibilities and hardships of adulthood because they will eventually have to accept the fact that they have a role in society that they must fulfill as a responsible, mature individual. The novel “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger follows the endeavours of Holden Caulfield, a sixteen-year-old teenage boy who faces a point in his life where he must make the transition from childhood to adulthood. In an attempt to retain his own childhood, he begins hoping to stop other young children from growing up and losing their innocence as well. As indicated by the title, “The Catcher in the Rye” is a book that explores a theme involving the preservation of innocence, especially of children. It is a story about a boy who is far too hesitant to grow up, and feels the need to ensure that no one else around him has to grow up either. His own fear of maturity and growing up is what leads to Holden’s desire to become a “catcher in the rye” so he can save innocent children from becoming part of the “phoniness” of the adult world.
James Cameron’s motion picture Titanic blew the crowds away when it was first released in 1997, and its success has echoed into contemporary film society. Due to this movie actress Kate Winslet got her huge breakthrough, which allowed her to become one of the most celebrated film stars of our time. Winslets character, Rose DeWitt Bukater, a beautiful upper-class girl who is unimpressed with the luxuries she is surrounded with, becomes the love interest of the penniless Jack Dawson during the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Among the many plotlines of Titanic, it is their impossible love story that is the most central, a conflict that is based on her being of higher social stature. This essay focuses on examining how the way women are portrayed as being unattainable may reinforce their objectification and further fuel a desire to possess them. The sequence I have chosen is that when the audience is first acquainted with Rose, as, while it is aligned with a classical presentation of a female character, it also demonstrates her role as an unachievable standard.

The definition of experience according to Google is “practical contact with and observation of facts or events.” This definition almost directly contradicts the definition of innocence, which is “lack of guile or corruption; purity.” Innocence seems to be the inverse of experience. That is to say one cannot find both, as one grows larger the other will shrink. In The two poems The Lamb and The Tyger, William Blake divides his poems into two volumes. One of which is called the Songs of innocence and the other is songs of experience. It’s easy to pick out which Book these two poems by Blake belong in because of the vocabulary, the punctuation, and the descriptions within the lines.
The sexual awakening in the short story "The Wind Blows " and in the novella "The Virgin and the Gipsy" is very similar in a number of ways. In both works, young women on the brink of womanhood endeavor to attain full maturity in a number of ways. Both stories portray the mental confusion and general chaos the women struggle against in their quest for awakening, although the depth and structure of these works are markedly different. The reasons for this are obvious; one of the stories is a novella, and the other, a short story. The author of the novella, "The Virgin and the Gipsy" is able to describe the journey of the female protagonist in much greater detail and over a longer period of time, as opposed to the short story. The writer of the short story "The Wind Blows", because of its shorter nature, is able to experiment in repetitive words and a short, gasping sentence structure which allows the reader to "feel" what Matilda feels, "The wind, the wind. It's frightening to be here in her room by herself. The bed, the mirror, the white jug and basin gleam like the sky outside. It's the bed that is frightening." (56). Aside from structural differences, the essences of both stories are the same. The young women are changing and have to cope with a new role in life.
1 In Katherine Mansfield’s Her First Ball, Leila, the main character is an eighteen-year-old girl from the rural country who has recently moved into the city with extended family members. To Leila, everything was “so new and exciting” (4th paragraph) and she immediately begins her path from innocence to experience. I can empathize with her, but I don’t feel sympathy for her. She didn’t have a tragic experience, she a learning experience. Leila’s metamorphosis during the course of the story proves that she is a heroine who overcame the conflict in her journey.
