Both Visions of the Daughters of Albion by William Blake and The History of Mary Prince by Thomas Pringle makes a powerful statement about the current social conditions for women in their days. The value of women maintaining their virginity became highly important. The words of Prince and Oothoon exemplifies the significance of the woman’s voice. Both these characters show that women can not be seen as objects nor can they be downgraded in society.

Oothoon knows she was not to be blamed for Bromion’s rape. Throughout the poem Oothoon struggles to show Theotorman she is purely innocent. But both Theotorman and Bromion do not acknowledge her innocence. Unlike like Bromion, Oothoon will experience life long difficulties because of his actions, physically and emotionally. Any person that is a victim of rape will be traumatized.
A woman being a victim of rape or being involved in an affair destroys her image in society. In Visions, Oothoon is referred to a harlot after getting raped by Bromion. Blake uses a “harlot” to signify how Oothoon lost her identity. “Behold this harlot here on Bromion’s bed” (18). This quote signifies that she changes from being a person into a possession. This highlights what I think to be the most important point of the poem which is the idea that women are a possession; shows that Oothoon’s existence became meaningless. Although patriarchal views were firmly established back then, traces of female contempt for such beliefs could be found in several popular literary works. Female characters’ opposition to societal norms serves to create humor and wish- fulfillment for female and male audiences to enjoy. “Lanval” by Marie De France and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer both show subversion of patriarchal attitudes by displaying the women in the text as superior or equal to the men. However, “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” also incorporates conventional societal ideas by including degradation of women and mistreatment of a wife by her husband.
In today’s society, gender issues are often discussed as a hot topic. In literature, feminist views are used to criticise “societal norms” in books and stories. Two popular pieces by authors Kolbenschlag and Hurston paint two very different views on women. One common assumption in the use of a feminist critical perspective is that gender issues are central. Kolbenschlag who wrote the literary criticism “Cinderella, the Legend” would most likely disagree with this statement, she feels that women bare greater burdens in society and are more largely affected by social norms.
Throughout history, women have struggled with, and fought against, oppression. They have been held back and weighed down by the sexist ideas of a male dominated society which has controlled cultural, economic and political ideas and structures. During the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s women became more vocal and rebuked sexism and the role that had been defined for them. Fighting with the powerful written word, women sought a voice, equality amongst men and an identity outside of their family. In many literary writings, especially by women, during the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s, we see symbols of oppression and the search for gender equality in society.
In the nineteenth-century women were oppressed from society and they had to stay home as housewives, cleaning, cooking and doing the household work (Jamil, 2009). Their rights or value in society were restricted and confined. Although this is true, these concepts has drastically changed over time. Women are more independent and really try to better themselves by studying and working. In literature, we are able to view the roles of women years ago. Women expectations during that time period was to be married and bare children. This is exactly what happens is the short stories The “Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin. The authors display women as repressed and unhappy with their lives during the nineteenth century. In both stories, the authors utilizes symbolism and irony to portray the story of two women that have different stories, but end tragically.
In the Middle Ages, the roles of women became less restricted and confined and women became more opinionated and vocal. Sir Gawain and The Green Knight presents Lady Bertilak, the wife of Sir Bertilak, as a woman who seems to possess some supernatural powers who seduces Sir Gawain, and Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath Prologue and Tale, present women who are determined to have power and gain sovereignty over the men in their lives. The female characters are very openly sensual and honest about their wants and desires. It is true that it is Morgan the Fay who is pulling the strings in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight; nevertheless the Gawain poet still gives her a role that empowers her. Alison in The Wife if Bath Prologue represents the voice of feminism and paves the way for a discourse in the relationships between husbands and wives and the role of the woman in society.
Men are represented as the authority and the head of the family, without giving the woman the opportunity to contribute with her ideas and opinions. Armand, as many man in his time, sees woman as inferior not only physically but also intellectually. This notion of man superiority is also a problem that current society confronts, and it is more commonly present in lower classes. There are still cases in which men insult and hit woman because they see them as inferior and not worth of respect. Furthermore, in the story we have the case of black servant women. Who besides of having to deal with all the abuses a slave suffers, have also to confront the discrimination that their sex inherently has. This group suffers the racism of the entire white society, and also is discriminated by white woman who do not treat them as equals. Even though slavery is not currently allowed, there is still discrimination towards women who work as maids in houses or companies. As a man fascinated with the role of women during the 14th Century, or most commonly known as the Middle Ages, Chaucer makes conclusive evaluations and remarks concerning how women were viewed during this time period. Determined to show that women were not weak and humble because of the male dominance surrounding them, Chaucer sets out to prove that women were a powerful and strong-willed gender. In order to defend this argument, the following characters and their tales will be examined: Griselda from the Clerk's Tale, and the Wife of Bath, narrator to the Wife of Bath's Tale. Using the role of gender within the genres of the Canterbury Tales, exploring each woman's participation in the outcomes of their tales, and comparing and contrasting these two heroines, we will find out how Chaucer broke the mold on medievalist attitudes toward women.
In conclusion, most of the female character are often isolated, victimized and ultimately killed by the male characters. Furthermore, it is rather ironic how Mary Shelly, the daughter Mary Wollestonecraft who wrote the Vindication of the Right of Women chooses to portray women. In this novel, the female characters are the exact opposite of the male characters; they are passive, weak and extremely limited. Mary Shelly repeatedly shows women in a victimized position exhibiting to the audience how things should not be. In conclusion, Mary Shelly’s novel is a reflection of how women were treated in the 1800’s.

Although the men did try a little to be nice to their wives and/or female counterparts, they were, for the most part, condescending and brutish. This essentially led to women being forced to escape their emotional shackles by any means necessary, which may have not ended well for the women; however in all cases, it led them to lead the life that they could control themselves.
In the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries, the idea of patriarchy ruled the many societies all over the world. Particularly in Britain, its “overarching patriarchal model” (Marsh) had “reserved power and privilege for men” (Marsh). In an essay on feminist criticism, Linda Peterson of Yale University explains how literature can "reflect and shape the attitudes that have held women back" (330). From the viewpoint of a feminist critic, "The Lady of Shalott" provides its reader with an analysis of the Victorian woman's conflict between her place in the interior, domestic role of society and her desire to break into the exterior, public sphere which generally had been the domain of men. Read as a commentary on women's roles in Victorian society, "The Lady of Shalott" may be interpreted in different ways. Thus, the speaker's commentary is ambiguous: Does he seek to reinforce the institution of patriarchal society as he "punishes" the Lady with her death for her venture into the public world of men, or does he sympathize with her yearnings for a more colorful, active life? Close reading reveals more than one possible answer to this question, but the overriding theme seems sympathetic to the Lady. By applying "the feminist critique" (Peterson 333-334) to Tennyson's famous poem, one may begin to understand how "The Lady of Shalott" not only analyzes, but actually critiques the attitudes that held women back and, in the end, makes a hopeful, less patriarchal statement about the place of women in Victorian society.
