You seem to have disappeared.(pg.263)" In Minot's story Lust you are play by play given the sequential events of a fifteen year old girls sex life. As portrayed by her thoughts after sex in this passage the girl is overly casual about the act of sex and years ahead of her time in her awareness of her actions. Minot's unique way of revealing to the reader the wild excursions done by this young promiscuous adolescent proves that she devalues the sacred act of sex. Furthermore, the manner in which the author illustrates to the reader these acts symbolizes the likeness of a list. Whether it's a list of things to do on the weekend or perhaps items of groceries which need to be picked up, her lust for each one of the boys in the story is about as well thought out and meaningful as each item which has carelessly and spontaneously been thrown on to a sheet of paper as is done in making a list. This symbolistic writing style is used to show how meaningless these relationships were but the deeper meaning of why she acted the way she did is revealed throughout the story. In “Youthful Indiscretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” Dana Fleming presents an essay concerning the safety of social networking sites and how Universities can deal and prevent problems. This article is targeted towards school administrators, faculty, and a social networking user audience who will either agree or disagree with her statement. I believe Fleming presents an excellent, substantial case for why she reasons the way she does. Fleming gives a sound, logical argument according to Toulmin’s Schema. In Richard Rodriguez’s The Achievement of Desire we are presented with a young Richard Rodriguez and follow him from the start of his education until he is an adult finally having reached his goals. In reference to the way he reads for the majority of his education, it can be said he reads going with the grain, while he reads a large volume of books, the quality of his reading is lacking.

When people have sex just to fulfill a physical need, as the poet believes sex outside of love-based relationship only harms and cheapens sex. Not only did slavery corrupt the slaves, but also the slave owners. The idea of absolute power over others led to the longing of total dominance at all times. Fredrick Douglass’s narrative clearly depicts the perception of mental corruption as a tyrannical slave owner. As slave owners experienced a constant craving for power, they utilized a variety of evil schemes and actions to fulfill their desires.

“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins, my sin, my soul” (Nabokov 9). Quoted from Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita, Humbert Humbert briefly describes his sensibilities towards his love Lolita. I’ve italicized love for the reason that this book is perceived often as not a true American love story but as a pedophile’s lust. The reasoning for the italicization is because I wanted to emphasis on the point that this book offers more than that of a pedophile’s love. Nabokov’s novel does a very good job of creating an interesting yet unorthodoxed plot. What Nabokov might find acceptable in today’s society, some people might find very offensive and disrupting. He does this to grab the reader’s attention; therefore, building their interests by having them see the other side of things. Why many readers may find this book to be associated with pornography or just another literary piece surrounded around pedophilia, Nabokov hits you with textual evidence, which may sway reader’s minds. As a reader of this novel, I am compelled to show you how this book is a true American “Love Story.”
Antoinette’s relationship with Tia represents several values for her. Their relationship embodies several racial metaphors. Tia is the symbol of the person Antoinette greatly desires to be but never could. She embodies the black character that is free from alienation that is accepted by her community, unlike Antoinette who is neither black nor white. She struggles to decipher her own identity. The novel opens with the portrayal of the Cosways’ ruin after the emancipation, due to the fact that they formerly owned black slaves. They call them white cockroaches ‘I never looked at any strange negro. They hated us. They called us white cockroaches’ (Pt1 Pg 9). They do however find security with some of the blacks, namely the ones that are not from Jamaican decent, such as Christophine and Tia. Antoinette not only finds herself in the hatred of the black community but also the new English Colonists reject them due to their long intimacy with blacks and due to the fact that they are ‘Creole’ and not English labeling them ‘white niggers’. Therefore Tia represent a girl of approximately Antoinette’s age, someone she can relate to, that is black and therefore has the privilege of being accepted into society. She was strong unlike Antoinette ‘sharp stones did not hurt her feet, I never saw her cry’ (Pt1 Pg9), therefore she looked for strength, comfort and a sense of belonging with her.
Even at a relatively young age, I can attest nobody is perfect. Everybody I have ever met has proven this notion time and time again; it is one of the many inevitable downfalls of human nature. Lust, one of the seven deadly sins, is a common point of controversy at the moment. Due to an unseeingly uncontrollable physical attraction toward someone or something, this feeling and action never seem to result in a positive outcome. Currently, marital infidelity is at an all time high, caused from various sources including some of the following: a larger availability and accessibility to divorce, a higher value placed on other aspects of life, and publically available pornography for younger individuals. Nevertheless, a global, upward trend of infidelity is evident with some very obvious reasoning behind it.
2. Obesity dramatically increased in the 70’s due to a number of factors. After World War 2, lawmakers, big business and labor leaders, along with many ordinary Americans put mass consumption at the center of their plans for a successful post-war nation. The availability of frozen dinners and a variety and surplus of different foods skyrocketed. In 1977, the US dietary guidelines changed drastically, promoting our diets as mainly carbohydrate based. Over the years, the sizes of certain foods and our portions have blown up. Twenty years ago, an average bagel was 3 inches in diameter and only 140 calories. Today, the size of the average bagel has doubled, now 6 inches in diameter and over 350 calories. The health problems that stem from being overweight go way beyond the ones we usually hear about, like diabetes and heart disease. Being overweight can also affect a person's joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels. In the U.S. 68.5% of adults are overweight or obese, 34.9% falling under the obese category and 31.8% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese with 16.9% being obese (Overweight and Obesity in the U.S.). Figuratively and literarily, the obesity rate is a growing problem. The total economic cost of overweight and obese persons in the United States and Canada caused by medical costs, excess mortality and disability is approximately $300 billion per year. $80 billion of this portion is due to overweight, and approximately $220 billion is due to obesity. The narrator no longer lives in a fog, but now she sees how vile and cruel her life is. How disconnected the people around her are. Minot demonstrates very clearly how boys’ sexual desire completely dominates the narrator and how girls are compelled by other girls as well as boys to accede to that desire. For example, when the narrator was speaking with her teacher and friends her friend complained about how men always want something from you and another friend replied with “you always feel like you have to deliver something.” Their teacher tells the girls “you do” she continues “babies.” This shows how even the adults in her life are disconnected and don’t carry women’s standards highly with respect. The girls always have to give something while the men just take and in this case, the little bit of dignity the character ever owned was taken from her and the saddest part was that she let it happen. The difference between the character at the beginning and how she was made to be in the end is that at the beginning she showed no feelings, no shame, and no remorse but now. Now she feels shame. She feels guilt. In order to get what she wanted she used sex but by using sex, she only reduced her chances of ever feeling real love and real importance. The narrator demonstrates her agony and detachment with post haste only at the very end of the story. The authors writing is connected to how the narrator feels. As her writing style became less fragmented, it signaled the zenith realization of truth within the main character. "After sex, you curl up like a shrimp, something deep inside you ruined, slammed in a place that sickens at slamming, and slowly you fill up with an overwhelming sadness, an elusive gaping worry. You don't try to explain it, filled with the knowledge that it's nothing after all, everything filling up finally and absolutely with death (Minot 280)”. The main character has grasped all of this, but it’s already too late.

When reading Lust, one can conclude that she started having sexual interactions early on in her life. I think she used this as an excuse to think it is okay to always be like that. She says in the story talking about Roger, “He was kicked out by sophomore year.” When you read the text around it, it suggests she had sexual interactions even before sophomore year. Then she said, “When we were little, the brothers next door tied up our ankles. They held the door of the goat house and would not let us out till we showed them our underpants.” I think other interactions so young like this has made her more expecting to her present behavior, also.
