The definition of experience according to Google is “practical contact with and observation of facts or events.” This definition almost directly contradicts the definition of innocence, which is “lack of guile or corruption; purity.” Innocence seems to be the inverse of experience. That is to say one cannot find both, as one grows larger the other will shrink. In The two poems The Lamb and The Tyger, William Blake divides his poems into two volumes. One of which is called the Songs of innocence and the other is songs of experience. It’s easy to pick out which Book these two poems by Blake belong in because of the vocabulary, the punctuation, and the descriptions within the lines.

Character Compare and Contrast Essay The Young and The Innocent Views The thesis of my paper would have to be, How Being Young, While Having an Innocent View of The World Could Be Misleading. I am comparing both Tom from “A Woman on The Roof” and Sammy from “A&P”. Both characters are very similar. Yet in some ways the two characters Tom and Sammy are not much alike. Both Tom and Sammy are rather young I would say both are around seventeen or eighteen years old.
The setting of a novel aids in the portrayal of the central theme of the work. Without a specific place and social environment, the characters are just there, with no reason behind any of their actions. The Age of Influence centers around the Old New York society during the 1870’s. Most of the characters are wealthy upper class citizens with a strict code to follow. The protagonist, Newland Archer, lives in a constant state of fear of being excluded from society for his actions. Archer’s character is affected by standard New York conventions as well as the pressure to uphold his place in society, both of which add to Wharton’s theme of dissatisfaction.
In A Separate Peace, John Knowles carries the theme of the inevitable loss of innocence throughout the entire novel. Several characters in the novel sustain both positive and negative changes, resulting from the change of the peaceful summer sessions at Devon to the reality of World War II. Loss of Innocence in Rite of Passage by Sharon Olds A rite of passage is defined as a ceremony marking a significant transition or an important event or achievement, both regarded as having great meaning in the lives of individuals. In Sharon Olds' moving poem "Rite of Passage", these definitions are illustrated in the lives of a mother and her seven-year-old son. The seriousness and significance of these events are represented in the author's tone, which undergoes many of its own changes as the poem progresses. From its title, the tone of the poem is already set as serious, and we know there will be a significant event taking place in someone's life. By comparing two novels that use innocence as a theme, as done above, it is evident that innocence is widely dependent on the context in which it is used. There is no clear definitive answer to what the true meaning of innocence is. It can only be stated that the definition of innocence is dynamic with respect to the author and the time period, in which the literature is written.
All the poems agree that innocence is an important stage of mankind’s life, but they differ in how much time innocence should last - for example, The Lamb may suggest as long period of innocence than Mrs Tilcher’s Class. Blake also uses sound to deliver the meaning to the poem. The poem starts off with "My mother groaned! my father wept." You can hear the sounds that the parents make when their child has entered this world. Instead of joyful sounds like cheer or cries of joy, Blake chooses words that give a meaning that it is not such a good thing that this baby was brought into this world. The mother may groan because of the pain of delivery, but she also groans because she knows about horrible things in this world that the child will have to go through. The father also weeps for the same reason, he knows that the child is no longer in the safety of the womb, but now is in the world to face many trials and tribulations.

William Blake, a unique poet of the literary canon, is one of the most critiqued poets of all time. Having a rather unique stylistic approach to topics, especially religion, Blake seems to contradict himself in his own writing and, therefore, sparks questions in the readers’ minds on specific subjects. Two of his poems in particular have been widely critiqued and viewed in various lights. “The Tyger,” written in 1774, and “The Lamb,” written five years later in 1789, are considered companion poems due to their similar humanistic topic and stark differences of each other. Through the use of specific titillation and use of rhetorical questioning, Blake sets up an ultimatum between the two poems, creating the illusion that each creature in the poems may have different creators. In this way, Blake questions traditional Christian doctrine in such a way that initiates curiosity of the identity of the creator, or creators, and the nature of each; thus, the reader is opened up to a more broad pattern of thought.

Abstract In this essay, I intend to explain how everyday lives challenge the construction of childhood as a time of innocence. In the main part of my assignment, I will explain the idea of innocence, which started with Romantic discourse of childhood and how it shaped our view of childhood. I will also look at two contradictory ideas of childhood innocence and guilt in Blake’s poems and extract from Mayhew’s book. Next, I will compare the images of innocence in TV adverts and Barnardo’s posters. After that, I will look at the representation of childhood innocence in sexuality and criminality, and the roles the age and the gender play in portraying children as innocent or guilty. I will include some cross-cultural and contemporary descriptions on the key topics. At the end of my assignment, I will summarize the main points of the arguments.
The speaker in "The Lamb" starts off with a child. The child addresses the lamb and asks, “Little Lamb who made thee Dost thou know who made thee” (1-2). The child is very concerned about his existence. He is also very curious, he immediately places the lamb under him by referring to him as "little". In line 5 the child begins to answer his own questions by naming explanations, "Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing, wooly, bright;" (5-6). In the second stanza the speaker is ready to give the lamb an answer. He wants to give the answer is a smart way. He does not want to just come out and say it. In line 13 and 14 the speaker says to the lamb "He is called by thy name, For He calls Himself a Lamb." (13-14). The lamb has the same name as the creator. "Lamb" is the name of the creator, the lamb is a symbol of Jesus Christ. The child continues to explain to the lamb and answer his own questions that God is the number one provider and has given him life, clothing, food, and such a sweet voice.
