Just imagine, walking down the sidewalk, stepping off the curb and BAM, you fracture your ankle pretty bad. The doctor tells you that you have osteoporosis after several scans and tests have been completed on it. You’re in a jumble and you’re all worried, but don’t worry. You probably didn’t even know you had osteoporosis until the fracture. Osteoporosis is a silent disease until the fractures and breaks start to occur. Osteoporosis affects one in every two women, but it only affects one in every four men. Osteoporosis affects 80% of women and only 20% of men. This bone disease affects over half the women in America, statistically speaking. Lack of exercise, lack of calcium, and genetics are a big player in people in general, not just a specific gender, having this disease. Statistically, over half the women in America have been diagnosed with osteoporosis within the ages ranging 45-50 and older.
Treatment is possible, but therapy would most likely be an option not everyone wants to hear. Pain medications can be prescribed, vitamins can be taken to strengthen your bones, and going to see a physical therapist can help. If you are a woman and over the age of 50, it is very recommended that you contact your doctor about the risks of you having this terrible bone disease. Men get it as well, but women get this bone disease which can originate from menopause.
Treatment options are available, but you have to go see a doctor to determine what would be better for you as an individual. Many people are put on medications to strengthen your bones and make sure the disease is under control but sometimes that is not the best route for some people. You can also do therapy. Now, doing therapy takes time and dedication. Most doctors recommend going for 6 weeks, a couple days a week. They don’t want you to strain your body to the point of a fracture occurring but also enough to fix the problem and help strengthen you enough to help cope with the disease. Sadly, women suffer more than men for lots of reasons such as; menopause, being smaller than men, having so much smaller bones. There’s many reasons why women are more prone to having osteoporosis but those are just a few. Over 10,000 women over the ages of roughly 45-50 have reported having broken or fractured hips due to osteoporosis. Roughly 3,000 men have reported this as well.
