Organizational pattern: Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Introduction I) I am sure all of you have heard of the infamous “freshman fifteen.” a. I won’t ask who has gained this weight, but by a raise of hands, how many of you have thought to yourself, “Are my jeans getting tighter?” b. I’ll admit, I definitely felt like my clothes were shrinking. c. But, I did something about it. II) I’m here to tell you that changing your eating habits will change your life. III) First, I will address the root issue of many people’s eating habits, and then I will expand on why and how to develop a healthier lifestyle. Body I) The problem is that many people do not realize the enormous effect their eating habits have on their bodies. a. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “despite the emphasis by nutritionists and other health professionals on the importance of fruit in a well-rounded healthy diet,” a survey taken during 1994-1996 revealed that “only 57.8 percent of people age 19 and younger ate fruits on a given day” (Fisher, 2004, p. 16). b. And what’s worse, although 78.3 percent of young individuals had eaten vegetables on a given day, nearly half of them preferred potatoes (Fisher, 2004, p. 16). 1. They’re not even green! c. People eat whatever’s available, especially if it’s cheap and/or convenient. i. As college students, for example, when we walk in to the Caf, there are so... ... middle of paper ... ...ard to do on my own. f. Now that you know what my situation was like going into the experiment, I will tell you what I did and what occurred as a result. i. Since I had to write a report on my findings, I took note of my weight in the morning of each day and of all the food that I ate throughout the day. ii. I kept a “food diary,” as people call it, but also took pictures of everything I ate so that I would also be aware of my portion sizes. 1. Doing so encouraged me to eat healthier food, such as more fruits and vegetables, as well as asking for smaller portions. iii. Within just eight days of the experimental research project, I regained, back control over my life! iv. I discovered that I appeared healthier, felt more energized, and was more confident about my self-esteem. 1. While it was not my goal to lose weight, it occurred as a result of my changing diet.
This source is valuable because it suggests that adopting a healthier diet takes time and effort, but it is ultimately beneficial in the long term.
There are many different beliefs about the proper way to eat healthy. People are often mislead and live unhealthy lifestyles as a result. Both Mary Maxfield and Michael Pollan explain their own beliefs on what a healthy diet is and how to live a healthy lifestyle. In the essay, “Escape from the Western diet” Michael Pollan writes about the flaws of the western diet and how we can correct these problems to become healthier. In the essay, “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, Mary Maxfield criticizes Michael Pollan’s essay about eating healthy, and explains her own theory on how to be healthy. She believes that Pollan is contradicting himself and that what he is stating is false. Mary Maxfield ponders the
For this part of assignment, I kept record of two consecutive days of what I ate for that days and how much calories I got from that food and drinks. Every day I usually start routine with drinking water which I think is the most important thing for a healthy lifestyle. Apart from this, I learned some following main points to help me by comparing my food chart with the recommendations
This process has not been easy and I have struggled to stay consistent with my healthy eating habits. Keeping my cravings under control has always been a challenge and my love of bread makes things a little harder. I also recognized that I am a stress eater. I had never paid attention to my eating patterns until I begin to keep a journal. This project has definitively helped me monitor and attain a better Healthier lifestyle.
These bad eating habits Timothy has include; buying snacks from school, having access to snack foods at home, and consuming ice cream before going to bed. Consuming all of these unhealthy foods, majority of the time, leads to overweight and obesity over time if not right away. As a result of Timothy’s eating habits his parents need to change his diet to something that is healthier. Furthermore, to help Timothy improve his eating habits, his parents need to emphasize eating more fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products, seeds, nuts, fish and lean meats, whole grain breads and cereals, and drinking more water. Further, not only does Timothy’s eating habits contribute to him being obese, but so do his levels of physical activity (Brown,
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
Describe your dietary habits (see assignment #1 from PHAS 5009) and discuss how those habits may be influencing your risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis, etc.
In “Bad Food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables”, Mark Bittman suggests that the people of America should stop eating unhealthy foods so often. In the article, Bittman tells his audience that people have “heart disease, diabetes and cancer are all in large part caused by the standard American Diet” (page 35). He also states that eating healthy can result to a better health care system saving millions of lives. The big issue is Americans eating unhealthy every day, but proposing a plan to help stop it from happening.
...e completely healthy attempting to avoid my punishment and then there were days where I ultimately caved and failed at eating well. On those days, I followed the rules I set in place and worked out as I said I would that evening. Part of the time my boyfriend would inevitably cause me to falter by cooking a nice fattening meal, but I don’t blame him at all considering it was up to me to make the decision to refrain from eating it. I probably didn’t do as well as I could have around lunch time or dinner but I’m glad at the fact that I did keep away from sweets and snacks throughout the entire week. I was really intrigued with getting good results for this project so I tried my hardest to actually follow the program set. Even if I don’t keep with this change after the project it’s very comforting to know I CAN eat healthy when I want and I CAN workout if I need too.
Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
In the book, In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan explores the relationship between nutrition and the Western diet, claiming that the answer to healthy eating is simply to “eat food”.
One way the population of America can overcome the issue of obesity is by simply eating healthier. Further explained, people can start making healthier decisions on what they decide to eat. An example would be choosing to eat an apple over a bowl of ice cream. This is often easier said than done. Sugars and sodium counts are very high inside the foods that can only satisfy a sweet tooth. The ingestion of carbohydrates, saturated fat, and trans fat are very easy to overlook. The food pyramid is a great visual of what people should be eating daily in order to maintain a healthful way of life. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein should become the main focus at every meal. Another way to eat healthier is to follow the suggested serving size by eating smaller portions. By law it is required for food-producing companies to place a label on their products with a listing of the serving size and ...
The United States is one of the most obese countries in the world. This shows us that many people look towards food to fill voids, to de-stress themselves, for convenience, and for various other reasons. This also shows that countless Americans do not try to stop their bad habits until it is too late. This highlights that many of them have the mentality of “it won’t happen to me”. When they do develop a disease, or become obese they wish they would’ve done something about it. This also brings up the issue of many generations acting and thinking this way due to their parents’ lack of knowledge and understanding. This causes their children to grow up thinking and acting the same way towards food and potentially walking the same path as their parents did with food. Obesity has become a growing infection plaguing the world and its children. A simple forty-five-minute exercise everyday can reduce the risk of heart disease, a disease in which I struggle with daily and has become a never ending battle. If American’s would make eating properly and exercising regularly a priority, their lives would be
There are so many ways to keep track of the things that I eat and this is just a simple way to improve my overall health. I will be more mindful of the foods that I eat and focus on the benefits that they provide. This is my goal, and I intend to improve my life with
When I completed the food diary, I learned that I have to improve my diet in order to have a better health and avoid diseases that are caused by the food that one consume. Making a food diary really helps to take counts of what is being eaten and the nutrients that are consumed daily, since when one eats, most of the people do not think what are they really eating. Knowing what nutrients are consumed on a daily basis helps people know what they should improve to have a balanced diet. At the end of the food diary, I understood that I should start eating more fruits and vegetables to have a better diet. My family and I learned that having a balanced diet is not how many calories are consumed on a daily basis, but what nutrients and vitamins are consumed when
