Now, when considering one wants to prevent or treat Osteoporosis, it does not mean to cut yourself off of foods with small portions or extreme dieting. It is a common misconception that when a person wants to be healthy they must eat in smaller portions, and while this does have some truth, one must consider when it comes to eating healthy, it means to eat healthy by adding nutritious portions of fruits, vegetables, protein, carbs, and of course, calcium intake for the bones in one’s diet. Also, one must not deprive themselves of having a “cheat day” once a week with chips and candy. But it is a good start to begin adding calcium fortified foods and supplements, such as milk. People should at least aim for 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium. Low-fat cheese, milk, yogurt, orange juice, graham crackers, and calcium supplements are a beneficial contribution in accessing calcium to the body (Vander, 2003). Of course, Osteoporosis develops during old age, due to the gradual decline in exercising, calcium in bones, and weight loss. However, Osteoporosis is also genetically found in some people with a long history of family members who have had bone fractures. Also, many factors affect and can cause Osteoporosis and one of them is smoking. Because smokers have poor lungs, it can be difficult to exercise. Another is not going out too much,
First of all, being a woman is one of the risk factors of osteoporosis especially after the age of menopause. “30% of American women between the ages of 60 and 70 have osteoporosis” (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016).To clarify, menopause is characterized by the loss of estrogen hormone production by the ovaries. Since estrogen is necessary for osteoblast to build new bone tissues, the lack of this hormone will improve the ability of osteoblast to absorb the bone tissues. Another risk factor of osteoporosis is being Caucasian. Caucasian women are more likely to get osteoporosis. 30% of Caucasian women experience a bone fracture in their lives that is related to osteoporosis” (Marieb & Hohen, 2016) . Furthermore, genetics are another risk factor of osteoporosis. Individuals with a family history of osteoporosis are at a primary risk for developing this condition. Moreover, a bad and unhealthy lifestyle including poor diet, lack of activities and exercise, smoking, and drinking too much are also risks factors of osteoporosis. In addition, low body weight is another risk factor of osteoporosis. Individuals with low body weight and small amount of fat and muscles are more likely to get this
Osteoporosis is associated with repeated fractures, tender bones, neck and back pain, a decrease in height as well as poor posture. There is a variety of factors that contribute to the development of osteoporosis. These include a calcium deficiency, possibly due to a poor diet, aging and old age, the loss of estrogen that comes with the onset of menopause in women, as well as genetics. There are several other diseases that contribute to osteoporosis such as Cushing’s Disease and rheumatoid arthritis. There are 40 million Americans who struggle with this disease, men as well as women although women are more likely to develop it due to the loss of estrogen during and post-menopause. The estrogen loss is a major factor in bone formation. Other factors include family members who have had the disease, smoking, and being on certain medications such as prednisone.
For some women, menopause may trigger feelings of depression and sadness because a lot of their personal identity in womanhood is tied up in being able to bear children. There are also those women who may have not had a chance yet to bear children or as many as they wanted to or planned to which lends itself to feelings of sadness, anger, grief and loss.
Many women in midlife feel that they have hit their stride and they feel confident and assertive, but often women can feel less attractive sometimes too. Physical development in midlife is a continuation of the gradual changes already underway in early adulthood. Middle age adults do beome much more aware of aging and there's more that can be done to promote physical valor and good health during midlife. 57 year old Janet teaches dance for children and adults. She has been teaching dance for the past 40 years now. Janet reflects on the aging process in her interview and states that she is very aware that her body has changed. Janet says when she was very young, she was more limber and she could bend all the way back and put her head against her rear end. She says she has lost some of her flexibility and it really makes her mad. she says, ''you see young dancers that can do all the jumps and I can't do the same anymore. It bothers me.'' She doesn't want to lose her physical and mental abilities and she says it's a fear that she is fighting. To stay healthy and maintain her good health, she says she reads Prevention magazing, does Chinese herbs, tries to eat healthy, doesn't drink coffee and she doesn't smoke or drink alcohol neither. She says, ''facing the reality of aging is difficult, but you have
“Though the age boundaries are not set in stone, we will consider middle adulthood as the developmental period that begins at approximately 40 to 45 years of age and extends to about 60 to 65 years of age” (Santrock, 2013, p. 485). I interviewed two individuals for this paper. Each person was asked the same fifteen questions (Appendix). I interviewed a male and a female who fell in the midrange of middle adulthood.
Osteoporosis comes from the latin word meaning “porous bone”. If you were to look closely at a bone you could see there are these small spaces on the bone which is good, now if you look at someone who suffers from osteoporosis you will see these spaces are much larger. As these spaces become larger it takes away from the strength and integrity of the bone making it grow weak and thin. Osteoporosis is most common in women over the age of 50 and gives them a higher risk of fractures and or breaks especially common in the hips. While we know osteoporosis comes from a number of things it can be broken down to age, the hormonal changes most commonly seen in menopause and a lower intake of Vitamin D and Calcium. Age is the unpreventable factor that doctors or you cannot change. Hormonal changes can be fixed with supplements or hormone therapy along with ones intake of Vitamin D and Calcium. Hormone therapy, estrogen alone or the combination of estrogen and progestin have been proven to prevent and aide in the treatment of osteoporosis in
In the counseling profession I believe that middle age produces a lot of stress. I would suggest stress-management techniques such as meditation and yoga. I would also suggest incorporating physical activity which is shown to increase endorphins in the body. For individuals having relationship difficulties I would suggest marriage counseling so they could understand the needs of one another and learn how to balance negative and positive effects in their relationship.
In the article Rare Causes of Osteoporosis by Gemma Marcucci and Maria Luisa Brandi state “Several pathogenic mechanisms are involved, including various aspects of bone metabolism such as: decreased bone formation, increased bone resorption, altered calcium, phosphorus and/or vitamin D homeostasis, and abnormal collagen synthesis” (Marcucci & Brandi, pp. 151). Osteoporosis is the break done in bone, causing the honeycomb like inside of bone; to create bigger holes are they lessen in mass. Calcium defiency is in relation to osteoporosis since calcium is an important factor in keeping bones strong. Though a doctor can clearly identify Osteoporosis, the symptoms are vague, almost invisible. Many people do not realize that they have osteoporosis until they suffer from a strain or fall that causes their ill-prepared bones to break (Simmons, pp. 35).
As individuals age they will come to a point in their lives where they are considered to be in middle adulthood. According to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016), middle adulthood is the range from 30-60 which involves physical and health changes (p. 477). Some individuals may take this time to reflect on their lives and be happy will all of the things they have done and look forward to what is still to come and there may be others who feel that should have changed things or even may experience a “midlife” crisis. AllPsychologyCareers website (2016) states, “Midlife crisis is a time of great emotional upheaval, anxiety, and drastic changes in behavior (para. 13). Middle adulthood can be a time of contentment or even regret.
Late adulthood is known as the period of life after middle adulthood, usually from around 65 years old to death (Santrock, 2013, p. 485). There are many varying stages of development and health in late adulthood, along with steady changing of life expectancy. Aging is a part of life, and with it comes changes in every area of living. Many diseases find late adulthood as an opportune time to affect people. Eventually, whether caused by disease or another reason, every individual dies. Death is unique to every person, and healthcare in America is changing to reflect that. This stage of life is a time when bodily processes and functions may be decreasing, but depending on lifestyle choices, death can come at different times.
Steps that you can take to reduce the chances of getting osteoporosis is consuming at least 3 portions of milk and dairy produce that have reduced fat content. You should also choose vegetables that are high in calcium such as broccoli and cabbage. Another recommendation is try to moderate the amount of alcohol you intake because alcohol can affect the liver which is important with using vitamin D in your body. You should also try to watch how much coffee and soft drinks that you consume a day because they can decrease the amount of calcium absorption which can cause bone loss. You should try to avoid eating lot of salty foods because they can cause your body to lose calcium from the sodium that is within it which can lead to bone loss. Other factors that can help you avoid getting osteoporosis is getting enough physical exercise such as sports and working out because that can improve strengthening your bones, eating fish such as salmon and at least once a week and eating vegetables and fruits at least five times daily because they help get the different nutrients that your body needs to keep it healthy. Smoking also can cause bones to become brittle because it affects your bone density but also affects your lungs which makes it harder to breath which can also can make them to do less physical activities and can also cause them to have poor
