Osteoporosis is a common disease where people lose bone density faster than normal. This disease causes the bone to become weak and brittle which leads to fractures of the spine, hip, and wrist from a simple fall or even a sneeze or a cough. Osteoporosis is a serious disease that leads to a faster than normal loss of the bone density, which puts the bone at a higher risk for fractures. In order to understand the causes of Osteoporosis, it is important to understand how bones are formed. Bone is a living tissue that is made mainly of collagen, calcium phosphate, and calcium carbonate. The mixture of collagen and calcium gives the bone strength and flexibility. The body deposits new bones and removes old ones; moreover, there are two types of bone cells that control the reproduction of bones. Cells called osteoclasts breakdown bone tissues thus, damaging the bone. Once the damaged bone is removed, cells called osteoblasts, use minerals including calcium and phosphate from the blood stream to make new healthy bone tissues. First of all, being a woman is one of the risk factors of osteoporosis especially after the age of menopause. “30% of American women between the ages of 60 and 70 have osteoporosis” (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016).To clarify, menopause is characterized by the loss of estrogen hormone production by the ovaries. Since estrogen is necessary for osteoblast to build new bone tissues, the lack of this hormone will improve the ability of osteoblast to absorb the bone tissues. Male or female, at any age, can get this but it is mostly occurs in older women (Team, 2016). Osteoporosis is very common, there are more than 3 million cases a year. There are many causes/risk factors, symptoms, and some treatment cases. About 54 million Americans have Osteoporosis and low bone mass (Foundation, 2016).
Binge drinking is an individual and public issue that poses an increasing concern on the physical, social and economic aspects of the health of Australians. For many people alcohol can bring much pleasure, joy and societal amusement, however when people drink in excess, or binge drink, the costs to health and the community can potentially be devastating. The definition of binge drinking is not widely agreed upon, however a commonly accepted description is the consumption of 5 or more standard drinks on any single occasion, and often modified to 4 drinks or more for women (Naimi et al., 2003). Osteopaths, as primary health care practitioners, must have useful knowledge and tools in assisting patients who cope with the consequences of binge drinking.

These two hormones are regulated by hormones produced by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. The hypothalamus senses changes in body’s metabolic rate and releases a hormone known as thyropin-releasing hormone (TRH). This hormone then flows through connecting vessels to the pituitary gland which signals it to release another hormone. This hormone is known as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH then makes its way to the bloodstream until it reaches the thyroid where it is then signaled to activate T3 and T4 production [1]. This mechanism is controlled by a negative feedback loop meaning that when there is a sufficient amount of thyroid hormones in the blood stream, this will signal back to stop production of thyroid stimulating hormones. Complications occur when the thyroid hormones keep increasing even though there is already a sufficient amount of T3 and T4 in the blood stream. This process of over expression of thryroid hormones is known as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a general term that includes any disease that has a consequence of an overabundance of thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism is a general term but there are many variant diseases that are in the hyperthyroidism category. These diseases include diffuse toxic goiter, Basedow’s disease, thyrotoxicosis, Parry’s and Graves’ disease.

Another recommendation is try to moderate the amount of alcohol you intake because alcohol can affect the liver which is important with using vitamin D in your body. You should also try to watch how much coffee and soft drinks that you consume a day because they can decrease the amount of calcium absorption which can cause bone loss. You should try to avoid eating lot of salty foods because they can cause your body to lose calcium from the sodium that is within it which can lead to bone loss. Other factors that can help you avoid getting osteoporosis is getting enough physical exercise such as sports and working out because that can improve strengthening your bones, eating fish such as salmon and at least once a week and eating vegetables and fruits at least five times daily because they help get the different nutrients that your body needs to keep it healthy. Smoking also can cause bones to become brittle because it affects your bone density but also affects your lungs which makes it harder to breath which can also can make them to do less physical activities and can also cause them to have poor
