Recommended: Why self awarness is important to social work
In social care, we work with some of society’s most vulnerable people. For a practitioner to best support an individual they must first be able to care for themselves. It is important to be aware of who we are, our strengths and our areas for improvement. This can directly affect the relationships and experiences we have with ourselves, clients, and our peers in social care practice. For this assignment, we will look at the importance of ‘the self’ and personal and professional development in social care. The self can be defined as ‘an organised, consistent set of perceptions of and beliefs about oneself.’ (Passer, Smith, Holt, Bremner, Sutherland & Vliek, 2009, p676). We should aim to understand ourselves, learn know how we function and what …show more content…
It is important to continue to grow and develop personally and professionally. It can make us aware of our strengths and weaknesses and so conscious of what needs to be developed and improved upon. This is an ongoing process throughout our lives. According to (Day, Halpin & Zaccaro, 2004, cited by Share & Lalor, 2009, p123) for ‘self-development to occur, a person needs to become aware of his/her internal processes {thoughts, feelings, moods, beliefs and actions} and have an awareness of how these internal processes impact on others as an external process. (Share & Lalor, 2009, p123) Self-awareness and self-development work hand in hand with one another, as do personal and professional development. ‘Conscious bringing into awareness of a greater understanding of both who, and how, we are in the world is known as the process of personal development.’ (Parfitt, 2006 as cited by Share & Lalor, 2009, p233) By actively working on our self-development we can advance and progress and not be stuck at a certain point. ‘The social care worker is not practising to his or her full potential if they are not engaged in awareness and development of the self.’ (Share & Lalor, 2009, p123) Winter 2009,(cited by Fenton 2016), states that ‘self-awareness, self-management and self-care are critical elements of emotional and professional competence.’ …show more content…
(Howard & Lyons, 2014, p152) Being able to reflect on an experience including how you responded or felt and how you might do things differently if it were to happen again can help us to work through such situations. This can involve looking back and asking questions such as, ‘why did I feel like that?’ and ‘was there something I could do differently if it happened again? ‘Boud (2001 as cited by Moore et al 2011, p545) ‘describes reflection as the process of turning experience into learning that involves making sense out of what has occurred in our lives.’ Reflection can also be useful in terms of learning from experience and so help towards self-care and self-development. ‘Reflective skill is described as an ability to identify personal errors and make evidence-based decisions. Self-awareness and reflective skills are closely related in which self-reflection involves learning processes, whereas self-awareness becomes the objective of the process.’ (Siraj, Salam, Azmina, Chong, Saidatul, Faiz, Murnira, Kang & Nabishah, 2013,
Anil Ananthaswamy describes the self as the role the brain plays in our notions of self and existence. That our sense of self is layered, pulling information from
However, despite all of the analysis and vast literature on the topic of selfhood there are still no completely agreed upon definitions of the self. Several scholars argue that it can never be given one simple, consistent description. The majority of authors are inclined to avoid the ‘unanswerable’ question of what self is and their constructions are based more on implicit understandings than clear-cut descriptions. As with the idea of consciousness, the self is catalogued amid those notions that are

Generally, many causes contribute to each result, outcome, event, or incident. Behar (1996) found “The genres of life history and life story are merging with the testimonio, which speaks to the role of witnessing in our time as a key form of approaching and transforming reality” (p. 27); what does this mean for the provider? We can further hypothesis of how in-depth influence will hold one to action, does it only represent importance in social settings or does it build a routine that will become an adapted behavior affecting more personal aspects of self-reflected in social behavior. Understanding the frameworks behind what we all bring to the table as professionals who have experience and historical knowledge of self and social services. Taking a look at the Macro, Mezzo, and Micro levels of social work and how it can become so easy to “burnout.” Nevertheless the work is important, and the people need the service. So essentially it’s up to the provider to be effective and efficient to ensure the best success for the population
It takes a while to get to know yourself before you are able to care for another person. Studying oneself is challenging because it allows reflection of one’s inner self, exposing your strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, interests, habits, defenses, and values. On the same note, it allows a person to be more familiar with the challenges he or she faces, how they might respond to certain situations, and offers an opportunity for learning and growth. Throughout this paper, I will discuss the various pieces of myself. I will consider my personal and professional life as a nurse, what I might employ as my mental model, which may limit my frame of thinking, how it has shaped me so far in my education, and how I relate to others.
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.) Reflection is a process that begins with looking back on a situation, thinking about it, learning from it and then using the new knowledge to help you in similar situations in the future. We need to evaluate through reflection to determine whether change is needed. We can then decide what action is needed and what we should do the next time we are faced with a similar situation. It might not necessarily be something you have done wrong, it may well be you were happy with the outcome of a situation you had some input into and would do again.
As a professional one must practice personal reflection and self-correction to assure continual professional development. As the social worker, I would identify my areas of strength as well as areas where improvement is needed, seek and act on corrective feedback from my supervisor or mentors, establish effective working relationships with clients and peers, and seek to resolve identified problems with performance of professional responsibilities. I would also make sure I practice within my area of competence by developing and enhancing my professional
Self awareness in nursing refers to how glowing nurses comprehend themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, attitude and ethics in order to better transact with their patients. Self- awareness includes review of self, together with self confidence. Self -regulation express beyond one`s emotion and being trustworthy. For nurses to be able to empathize with their patients and treat them with compassion, they have to be self aware. When nurses are self aware, they are capable to adapt to, or certainly change their attitudes and deed in order to understand how unusual people take care of them hence improving the nurse- patient relationship. Nurses must reflect carefully on whether they can sustain in dependence in caring for a client and whether the relationship interferes with gathering the client’s needs. It is also essential to be sure that providing care to family and friends does not interfere with the care of other clients or with the dynamics of the health care group. Before making the conclusion, the nurse may possibly wish to discuss the situation with colleagues and the employer.
As a social worker in training I bought positive development in skills, though many still need more attention, some more than others. Social workers require many flexible skills that are hard to begin, but I feel I have made a good start with my peers, my short-comings and strengths included. The reflection individually and with peers is an important tool to my skills growth, as well as the practice in doing it, which builds my confidence in my future in skill growth and a competent social
In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.
To begin with, self awareness is defined as knowledge and understanding of our own self character. Self awareness is achieved by establishing trust with relationship which allows the client to express their feelings so that the situation is less threatening to the client’s and the client is able to understand the situation very well (Crisp and Taylor, 2013). Self awareness is important to an individual’s health to confirm an identity for the client. Nurses c...
These individuals have shown me that to be an effective social worker it is important to be able to integrate one’s personal and professional aspects into this profession while also remembering to practice self-care in order to avoid burnout or compassion fatigue. On page 203 of our textbook, Garthwait explains that social workers, “Must have a high level of self-awareness so they can make good choices in relation to the type of job they seek, practice self-care and stress management, and balance personal and professional responsibilities” (2014). Along with this it is important to practice cultural competence so that you are able to understand your client as a human being with their own ideas and beliefs. This was shown on a daily basis at my field placement. Those individuals who mentored me throughout the last few months never focused on the client’s weaknesses or problems, but on what abilities, talents, and resources they did
Self-awareness and self-knowledge are important in any community services work. Many people who are drawn to this kind of work are naturally compassionate and have a strong desire to help others. Ideally, this trait is best if united with an ability to be objective, maintain professional boundaries and avoid stress-related conditions such as burnout. Community services work can be complex and challenging, and may involve working with people who have different value systems, beliefs, life experiences and personal circumstances. In order to carry out your work effectively, you need to understand how your own personality, beliefs, values and behaviours impact on others and influence your practice. Realising how you gained your belief systems
A self is some sort of inner being or principle, essential to, but not identical with, the person as whole. It is that in a person that thinks and feels. The self is usually conceived in philosophy as that which one refer to with the word “I”. It is that part or aspects of a person that accounts for personal identity through time. In spite of all the ways one can change with time, the self is invariably same through time. A self is what is supposed to account for the fact that an individual is same person today as he/she was at the age of five, given that all his characteristics have changed over time. For instance, compared to his childhood, this individual is stronger, taller, and smarter; he has different aspirations and dreams, different thoughts and fears, his interests and activities are remarkably different. Yet, he is still the same ...
I realised that self-awareness is important in achieving self-improvement. The more an individual understands themselves, the better he or she is at adapting life changes that is according to their needs. The more self-aware we are, it improves the level of confidence we have on oneselves. This can be achieved through greater exposure, thus widens one’s experiences and will be more likely be more accepting of others. Self-awareness will also benefit us to be more accurate in accessing
