“Self-awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings and behaviour. Alternatively, it can be defined as the realisation of oneself as an individual entity.” (Crisp & Turner, 2010). In other words, self awareness is recognising one’s personality which includes strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs and emotions. I realised that self-awareness is important in achieving self-improvement. The more an individual understands themselves, the better he or she is at adapting life changes that is according to their needs. The more self-aware we are, it improves the level of confidence we have on oneselves. This can be achieved through greater exposure, thus widens one’s experiences and will be more likely be more accepting of others. Self-awareness will also benefit us to be more accurate in accessing …show more content…
Mayer and Salovey (2001) maintained that emotions help prioritise, decide, anticipate and plan one’s actions. In order to effectively manage one’s emotions, one must first learn to identify and recognise them accurately. They should not neglect their emotions as this will reflect lack of self-awareness. For example, when someone lost their loved ones, they choose to be in a state of denial allowing themselves to be drowned in depression and sickness. They refused to get away from feeling negative and find solutions to overcome their emotions. These group of people face difficulties in recognising, identifying and managing their emotions. It is also vital to get a grip of the situation besides being able to identify and recognise emotion. When one is able to take control of the situation, they will be able to reflect on the situation without acting impulsively. Different people react differently to the same situations. This is due to different experiences, varied cultural background or different level of
By reflecting on this and as I continue throughout my career, I concur with LTC Sewell’s article on self-awareness. As I continue to “understand, refine and often redefine” myself and improve articulating who I am to others, my aim is to improve myself, for the current and future organizations that may have the opportunity to be affiliated.
In addition a positive self-awareness gives a sense of continuity, wholeness and consistency to a person. In relation to nursing, self-awareness helps nurses to learn about their strength and weaknesses. “It helps nurses to deliver better client care thus; client gets well soon and builds a trusting relation between the client and the nurse. Self-awareness helps nurses to identify several problems that might be a cause I providing better care”(Nancy Burns, 2005).
Figuring out how to manage one's feelings People who don't know how to quiet and calm them when they are feeling miserable or furious will probably wind up plainly focused and disturbed. Being able to recognize one's feelings can expand their resistance to stretch
The ability to express and control our own emotions is vital for our survival in society and the work place but so is our ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Salovey and Mayer proposed a model that identified four different factors of emotional intelligence (Cherry, 2015).
(2014) there are four instances when emotions appear: basic emotions, emotions involving the self, self-evaluative emotions, and emotions involving others. When uncle Kobus died, two types of emotions appeared, namely basic emotions (sadness and anger) and emotions involving others (sympathy). The basic emotions I felt were sadness, as I was sad that he died and cannot one day witness his children’s weddings of graduation, and anger, as I was angry at my father for not crying about his best friend’s death and that uncle Kobus’s conditions were improving. According to Louw et al. (2014) all individuals experience emotions, which are usually based on the situation as well as the psychological and behavioural reactions. When I found out that uncle Kobus died, I felt devastated, because he was my father’s best friend and he was also like a father to me. According to Louw et al. (2015) there are four solutions to emotional significance, namely problem focused strategies, cognitive analytical strategies, passive dependant strategies, and avoidant strategies. In the case of the death of my father’s best friend, I made use of the passive dependant and the avoidant strategies- I attempted to withdraw myself from the situation and also to deny it. For about a year no one knew how I felt about his death as I did not wanted to talk to anyone about it. I felt empathy towards my father, because his last words to his best friend were “You have to get well soon
Erik Erikson composed a theory of psychological development that was composed of eight stages. Erikson’s theory focuses on how personalities evolve throughout life as a result of the interaction between biologically based maturation and the demands of society. According to Erikson, “Each stage of human development presents its characteristic crises. Coping well with each crisis makes an individual better prepared to cope with the next.” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 314) According to Erikson’s eight stages of development, I have only been through six of the eight stages.
As we reviewed the self awareness module this past week, it was very interesting to see how the self assessments provided the class with information about their own personal human behaviors. I was aware of most of the information provided but there were some tendencies I was surprised to find that fitted my character. It was good to be reminded of the things I had forgotten about myself. Learning about my individuality and how I interact and respond to others based on my traits, personality and behavior has been an awakening experience. It is also great to know that I can work on areas that need improvement to become a more balanced person to better assist my subordinates, teams and organizations.
To begin with, self awareness is defined as knowledge and understanding of our own self character. Self awareness is achieved by establishing trust with relationship which allows the client to express their feelings so that the situation is less threatening to the client’s and the client is able to understand the situation very well (Crisp and Taylor, 2013). Self awareness is important to an individual’s health to confirm an identity for the client. Nurses c...
I always found typing out essays was a piece of cake in high school. All I really did was go right into typing the whole thing in about an hour. But once I went into my first class in WRC 1013, my professor explains all these different types of essays. I went into class only given a simple topic to type about in high school. Now, I see I have to type an analysis, definition, and compare and contrast essays. Rather than just making up essays, like I did before, I started taking a different approach that my professor had advised me to do. I used methods like planning, drafting, and also going to the library to get it revised in order to get the grade I wanted. Instead of procrastinating back then, now, I tend to do it on the first day I receive this assignment and work on it constantly until this work is due. With the semester coming to an end, I feel like I improved on my typing skills, feeling I can type my essays with a proper and academically approach.
Perceiving emotions accurately is the first step to understanding them. In most cases, the ability to decipher body language and non-verbal communication is key. The second step is reasoning with emotions. This requires an individual to use emotions to promote thinking processes and cognitive ability. Our emotions help d...
It is a well-known fact that different perspectives or ideologies claim that the lives must be examined in order to know the truth and reality about it. Most of the people think that they know many things and can do lots of works that others cannot. This is the only misconception about them as they in reality do not examine their lives. If they examine their lives, they will exactly reach to the point that they know nothing. Most of the things go beyond people’s understandings because they never go through self-examination. The philosophy of self-examination and self-knowledge has co-combination. It is neither very easy to understand nor very complicated to perform. In addition, most people do not have the knowledge about their lives throughout
Perception of one’s self begins early in life. For me, it began as being a little sister. My older sister was six when I was born and due to that age difference, was also a kind of parent to me. I knew I was to be the compliant, cute little sister and spent my younger years trying to live up to the little sister standard. It took years to develop what sisterhood really was into my self-concept.
One of the first steps in becoming more self aware, is to think about your morals, and what you think good citizenship looks like. Look at how your behavior compares to the imaginary citizen you just created. Self awareness isn’t trying to become a better person, it is about thinking about what you WANT to become, and how you can achieve that goal. As long as you are happy with who you are you will lead a happier life. To achieve full self awareness, and to truly find what you want in life is difficult to achieve. Many people believe they do have self awareness. A study testing certain parts of the human brain that cause people to look at themselves in a different way, showed that only 10% of Americans tested truly passed as even slightly self aware, while 95% of Americans, tested claimed that they had good self awareness.
What is the importance of learning to me? To me the importance of learning is to gain knowledge and experience in my subjects that will further help me in my future. The importance of learning is everything. If you value your learning and think that it’s important then you are for sure to succeed and do well in one way or another. Learning new things helps us to keep up with our ever changing society, and as new things come out and develop, the more things we have that we can learn about. Learning is also essential to help with our self-esteem. Our brains always need to be doing something, and learning helps it to stay active and aware as it has to work. Would I consider myself an active or a passive learner? I would consider myself as an active learner, because I am able to fully concentrate during class and am able to understand what is taught and said in class. Do I take responsibility
“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.” - Madonna. When you read this quote, you think of one word, “Self-improvement.” Just with this one topic, you may ponder and ask yourself, “Who needs Self-improvement?” ,“ When do we need to start changing and How do we begin?”,” What will we get from it?” , and the most important question of all, “Why do we need self-improvement?” Self improvement comes from experiences. Experiences that were either blessings, mistakes, regrets, and overall a lesson each time. Self-improvement is a wake up call but will we ever take the chance to self-improve or just let it pass it by?
