I’m interested in the teacher cadet program because I feel as if this is one way that I can get some experience in the field of work that I would hope to someday work in and that it will help me know for sure that this is what I want to do. I made up my mind at the age of five that I wanted to be a teacher and for as long as I can remember,that’s what I’ve wanted to do. I love helping people, whether it’s showing them how to do a math problem, or teaching them to tie their shoes. Whenever I was a younger, my favorite thing to do was to line up all of my babydolls and stuffed animals, I even had a whiteboard hanging in my room so that I could write on it and “teach” them things from the old textbooks my 1st grade teacher gave me. I loved being able to “teach” my bear and show him how to do math problems.
I walked into high school determined to become a teacher. I came out with a better understanding of myself and a new job in mind. When I crossed the thresh hold of Gibbs High School, I knew it was the time to find myself. I chose new classes that I knew nothing about including JROTC. I chose JROTC specifically because the rope bridges looked exciting and adventurous. When I finally got to try the rope bridge on for size, it wasn’t tied properly and fell while I was on it. This typically would scare someone away from the program, but it made me more determined. I was eager to learn and to grow from each experience I ran into in JROTC. In 1993, I joined the Army National Guard, as a Mechanic. Soon after enlistment, I realized Army life actually suited me; and, despite never having turned a wrench before, I turned out to be a pretty good mechanic. Through the years, I’ve worked hard in hopes that one day I would reach the top of the Army rank structure. Being promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class was a major accomplishment. As a senior non-commissioned officer, I felt I had arrived and was perfectly content on retiring at this rank. That is until recently, when I realized the possibility existed that I could become a First Sergeant, the highest ranked non-commissioned officer in the company.
In my current role, I am in command of 2 Troop, a star level instructor, as well as the Master of Arms on the Marksmanship Team, providing the cadets with the knowledge required to succeed in Cadets and demonstrating my strong will to support others to become better. If selected, I would like to share the experience (through various means such as PowerPoints, informal conversations, and written forms) in hopes of inspiring more youth to appreciate their fortunate lives as a result of the soldiers that fought for our freedom.
The reasons I wish to join the Cranston Police Explorers Program is because of the interest i have in learning to become a leader, and how to handle myself and others during tough situations. I feel that it is crucial to have a basic understanding of self control, obedience, and to feel part of a program in which other individuals learn to work together to find the solution of a problem. Staying physically fit is another reason why I would like to join the Cranston Police Explorers Program. By committing to this program it will help me stay on track with having a happier, healthier lifestyle. As I was preparing to leave high school and look for a career, I had to make an immense decision. I had to decide what field I wanted to pursue, and how to go about it. I knew I wanted to teach because it offered everything I wanted in a profession including, good benefits, decent pay, the chance to work with children, and the chance to eventually coach High School Football. No other career I found can offer all of these advantages.
I was one of those children who wanted to be a veterinarian when I was young, but I decided after taking an Early Childhood Education class that I wanted to be a teacher. I have then signed up for the teacher cadet program at my school. To reach my goals, I realize that I must pursue at least a four year college education beginning in the Fall 2016 semester. I am very excited about my future and feel that with the opportunity your scholarship will provide, I can help teach a younger generation.
Being a volunteer at the Living Coast Discovery Center (LCDC) has inspired me to pursue my dreams of one day becoming a elementary school teacher. As of today I have 73 hours with LCDC where I dedicated my weekends to teach kids, some as young as 2 years old about animals while helping them make arts and crafts, or as I like to call them, their Mona Lisas. Not only have I learned to keep children engaged, but I get to see how far a little kids mind takes them.
Although at some times challenging, my overall experience was very positive and I learned a great deal during my 47-month experience. I have numerous instructors and tactical officers who pushed me but also believed in me. Their investment in me is the reason that I have been very successful in my professional career. When I woke up on Tuesday, September 5th, I was ecstatic to finally start working with the students at Prescott Elementary. I have been working with kids for the past four years and I couldn’t wait to meet new children. Even though I just considered teaching a few months ago, I have always loved working with kids. Ever since I was a cheerleading coach for young girls I knew I wanted to interact with kids in some way as a career. Before teaching, I though about being a pediatrician. After I tossed that idea around, I thought about being a physical therapist with a specialization in pediatrics. Then finally, I thought of being a pediatric nurse, I really wanted to work with infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the hospital. But then I realized that all those science courses that the medical field entails are not for me. This is when I was enlightened and became interested in teaching.
When I was younger, like most kids, I wanted to be a princess/ paleontologist/ superhero doctor, but it wasn’t until I procured my very first job as a lifeguard that I discovered my admiration for teaching. My boss noticed that I had a knack at helping the other lifeguards understand problematic concepts and offered me the opportunity to teach swim lessons. When he handed me the curriculum, I had no idea what I was doing, but I studied the concepts, created lesson plans, constructed my own treasure box, and tackled this opportunity with enthusiasm! To begin out of the countless professions one has to chose from in the world today I have chosen to become a teacher. I have chosen to become a teacher because I myself am a product of some whom I consider to be the best teachers in the world. As a child in North Carolina I was inspired by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Hollyfield. Mrs. Hollyfield taught me that no star was too far out of reach, if I put my mind to accomplishing my goal I could make it. Mrs. Hollyfield inspired me to be the best I could be at anything I wanted to be. As I have grown I have had other important teachers, some whom I am surrounded by daily whom inspire me to set out to accomplish my dreams. It has always been my dream to become an officer in the military ever since I was young. My uncle was in the military and loved it, he always told me stories about it and how much he enjoyed it. Growing up hearing his stories and seeing his uniform made me want to do it one day. Well, for me that one day is here now and I am proud to put on that uniform and call myself a soldier. I have always been a leader in my family, my community, and in my life in general. I like to not just be in charge but, I like to inspire those around me. I enjoy setting the example for those around me to follow.
I have not always wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to work with children in some way, but I was pretty sure that teaching was not for me. I was well on my way in my junior year of college working toward a biology degree so that I could become a pediatric physician’s assistant. I still cannot explain what happened, but one week I was a biology major, and the next I knew that I have always been meant to teach children. I suppose I just took the longer route to get there than most people do. The two main reasons that I have chosen to become a teacher is that I believe that teaching is extremely personally rewarding in many ways and the fact that I can actively make a difference in someone’s life.
