Every day students leave their homes to go to school. In fact, school makes about a third of a student’s life that is if we did not count the time needed for homework. The issue of assigning homework has been a national debate for years. Although some people believe homework benefits students. Opponents argue that homework is harmful for a variety of reasons. Homework should be eliminated because it creates too much stress, causes family issues and there has been multiple scientific studies that prove homework doesn’t help.
Because it creates too much stress for students, homework should not be assigned. Zach Masterman, a fifteen year old high school student says that “After putting in a full day of school, after-school activities and choir

Alfie Kohn the writer of “The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing” said, “It raises levels of frustration anxiety and family tension while robbing kids of time for imaginative play and outdoor exercise. Most importantly it crushes the ability for students to get excited about learning he says.”(2). The speaker demonstrates ethos by establishing authority because he wrote a book about homework and what it does to people. By establishing credibility, Alfie Kohn enhances his argument which convinces readers to agree that homework causes family issues. Alice Keeler, a former high school math teacher said, “she taught students math without homework and saw no drop in test scores - but rather an increase in positive relationships with students and parents.”(3). The speaker demonstrates ethos by establishing authority because she was a teacher that recorded what happened when homework was removed so because it was removed kids and parents increased their relationship. By establishing credibility, Alice Keeler enhances her argument which convinces readers to believe that homework does cause issues. While this is one of the reasons homework should be eliminated there also one more which is that there’s no scientific findings it
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
One of the reasons homework should be banned is because of the unnecessary stress and strain it creates for students. Many students are left pulling their hair out at homework time. Students struggle with homework for different reasons. Some of which are because they do not understand the assigned homework, or they are not being challenged, and quite possibly because they have hit their daily threshold for learning and have no more to give. Furthermore, students who struggle academically will likely require extra assistance to do their homework. Students are therefore tasked with finding a qualified person to assist them with homework. Students are not only under the stress of homework, but now they are under additional stress to find a qualified person that can assist them. Unfortunately, some students may not be able to obtain the help they need with their homework. Consequently and to no fault of their own their grades may be affected inaccurat...
The fact that the amount of homework has risen 3 or 4 times over the past decades shows that homework isn’t brain-stimulating, but exhausting. With this in mind, we can evaluate that longer hours also lead to bad grades, a reduction in self confidence, weakened social skills, and other qualities of life (CNN). These serious allegations all show that homework is not beneficial, but in fact,
Another reason students should receive less homework is because too much homework can cause students to have severe stress, anxiety, and depression. “There’s an inherent quality to homework that evokes a certain amount of stress, and that can be good, because it pushes us to learn. But for some children, the anxiety is so pronounced it basically freezes them” (Bailey). Homework does help students learn, but at what cost? If students are always worried over their homework, the positive effects become null and void. Teachers expect too much from their students. The expectation that the student's homework must be perfect causes even more anxiety in the student (Bailey). Homework can also c...
Harris Cooper, a researcher on homework from Duke University, claims that too much homework causes stress. In this I paper will talk about the damaging effects homework has on a child, how homework causes students to dropout of school, and some ideas for an alternative to homework.
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. This fact was proven, according to a 2006 study by Harris Cooper, director of Duke University’s Program in education, in the article “Homework or Not? That is the (Research) Question”. The studies instituted that “students who had homework performed better on class tests compared to those who did not” (DeNisco). Another compelling thing about homework, are the qualities a skills th...
Thirdly, is that excessive amounts of homework can take many hours to do and make students deprived of sleep. To start off, homework does not impact students’ academic performances and instead gives stress to students and parents. If homework does not help out students then what reason is there to do it. According to the article, “homework does not benefit children’s grades and is even detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self confidence, their social skills, and their quality of life.” Homework also stresses out students and parents because it takes up so much time of the day for students.
Dr. Michael Nagel, an associate professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says homework has no scientific benefit and that it could even be bad for a student’s brain. “The adult brain does not fully mature until the third decade of life (a person’s thirty’s) and too much stimulation could cause unnecessary stress on a student.” An analysis conducted by Pearson showed that the number of hours spent on homework was between ten and sixty-five hours a week, with females scoring higher on the hours of homework, stres...
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age. Here are a few examples: building character, promoting self-discipline, or teaching good work habits. All teachers who assign homework want to believe that the gain outweighs the pain. Although, there is no evidence of that and they must rely on faith (“Homework: No Proven Benefits”, pg. 1). Michellea, a mother of a middle school student, says that some work can reinforce certain skills, but hours of homework are unhealthy and unproductive. Mominseattle agrees. She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. She believes students should enjoy their childhood, as short as it already is. MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep. With busy families, like hers, they have many after school activities, so when they get home, they do not have time for too much homework. She says ...
Due to how to it affects health, inflicts upon extra curricular time, and is ineffective to learning, students should not have homework. According to Denise Pope, physical impacts, such as, migraines, ulcers, stomach problems, sleep deprivation, exhaustion and weight loss are clear connections related to excessive homework. Yes, homework does help develop the brain, but if these consequences occur brain development will be delayed even more than if there was no homework. Many students stated that homework was a dominating force in their lives. Fifty-six percent, according to American Psychological Association, of teens say that they were stressed by school pressures.
Hours of homework can lead to stress and lack of sleep. Teenage students already deal with enough stress outside of school every day and then they have to go home and worry about how they are going to get all their homework done for the next day. One study shows that 53 percent of students say homework is a major stress in their lives(Levy). If students did not have to worry about homework they would not be so stress and they could enjoy their schooling experience more.
Is homework beneficial or harmful? Homework expands everyone’s understanding and prepares them for the future, but it becomes very tough and stressful. Some people argue that homework takes away family time and is the root to stress which could have side effects on health especially for middle school students, whereas others argue that homework is a significant part of the learning procedure and helps build life skills. Homework has its position when it comes to learning, getting better grades in high school, challenging , while it could be stressful and tedious. At the end, the question originates, “Should homework be assigned to middle school students?”
Unfortunately, it’s even worse when students have extracurricular activities, studying, and etc. The final nail in the coffin is when school is already hectic enough and some students feel like collapsing on the bed. Next, is why I think homework should still be assigned. My first reason is that homework overall is helpful and can help us practice and master topic we’re currently learning. Additionally, according to the article, “By giving homework, children will learn to be responsible, solve problems, analyze, manage their time and take on responsibilities” (List of 10 Big Pros and Cons of Homework 3).
Have you ever wonder why students required to do homework? The idea of homework is to expand the students’ critical thinking skills and practice for a subject that requires more understanding for students. Young students learned that they must be in an environment where homework is an essential requirement to do at home after school. As they grow up they learn also that the homework’s grade may affect to their overall grade and that if they do not complete it they would get a lower grade in the class. This idea of homework affecting their grade may leave the students to stress and have anxiety they would have once they get to their home. This is because they may need more help than what the teachers requires them with or they may have not understood it well when the subject was being
In conclusion, homework should be abolished within school environments for the well-being of the general population. Schools, and students could benefit greatly from the elimination of homework within its society. Such facts are true because homework puts a strain on some families, poorer kids are unable to receive the same help as their wealthier peers, teachers don’t know how to assign proper assignments and a correlation does not exist between better grades and higher amounts of work. Due to the increase in valid reasons to eliminate homework within school districts, many locations are making the switch to a homework free society, creating a better world for students to grow up and become leaders in!
