Homework is a debated topic all over the United States. It is a constant argument between students and teachers, and sometimes even parents. Teachers encourage students to be active and involved in extracurricular actives, yet they also expect students to do hours of homework every night. Teachers assign homework nearly every night, but is it hurting more than it is helping. Students should not be expected to do homework every night. Hours of homework can lead to stress and lack of sleep. Teenage students already deal with enough stress outside of school every day and then they have to go home and worry about how they are going to get all their homework done for the next day. One study shows that 53 percent of students say homework is a major stress in their lives(Levy). Many students participate in sports and other extracurricular actives after the school day. They get done with school and then have to go to a three hour practice or rehearsal and then after that some might have to go to a job or even take care of family members. Studies show that 57 percent of students are involved in one extra-circular activity after school(Nearly). That means over half the school has to go to some sort of practice after school and then is expect to go home and do hours of homework. Students still want to have time to hangout and be with their friends, but they do not have time to be with them when they are busy doing homework. When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.

However, there is an ongoing dispute between critics on whether a lot of homework has more negative effects than positive effects, and vice versa. Homework is the greatest tool for student success, whether they realize it or not, homework is the key to success, it may not be to fun, but it has many positive effects. Homework improves academic success, it develops non-school skills, and it helps involve parents.
There should not be homework for students. For starters, homework pushes families further apart from each other. Secondly, homework causes kids to actually do worse on schoolwork and tests. A two-foot pile of paper gone to waste, only to “reteach” what you have learned today in school, which is already seven hours of hard learning, working, and participating. Tired and desperate for just a second to get some fresh air, you glance at your watch. It’s eleven at night and you must finish every paper before school starts, or else your teacher will mark your grades down. Not only did you not eat dinner or have a few minutes to bond with your family today, but also, you haven’t had enough rest to refresh you for the next day as you prepare to learn.
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. I hate homework! Students are over assigned with homework. They already have classwork throughout their whole day at school for seven hours. Because of Homework they come home from school every day and have to do almost three to four hours of homework sometimes even more. When they come home from school and do homework it’s almost as if they never left.

These authors also mention their thoughts on how many hours of homework should be given each night, and what the purpose of homework should be. While all articles analyze the pros and cons of homework, Parker uses the most precise facts and has the strongest argument against homework.

Ring! The bell has rung letting you know school is finally over. You slowly trudge to your locker to get all the homework and textbooks you’ll need. Once again your teachers have piled you with lots of homework that you know will take you hours to do. Every single school day, hundreds of schools across the country assign homework every night. This leads to hours of work after school that many students just don’t want to do. Many parents and schools think homework is helpful. However, this may not be the case. Schools should not assign homework because students need time to relax, and too much homework may cause health problems.

She points out how the quantity of students’ homework is a lot less important than its quality.
