Recommended: A paper on why professional development is important

A Love of Learning, a Love of Teaching Heidi Sheridan went to college to see how much she could learn about a subject, which is why she ended up going to graduate school and getting another degree later. She wanted to go to college and learn, unlike many students today who go just to get a job. Sheridan is the interim dean at Ocean County College. She was a professor there and still teaches a class or two with her new position. She was originally from California, where she was born, raised, and educated. She moved to New Jersey in 2006 after meeting her husband. She has always had a passion for learning and a natural ability to teach, which has led her to where she is now and what she has accomplished. Sheridan has been in a school setting throughout her entire life. Her academic career began at Crafton Hills Community College. Being the first one in her family to go to college, she was surprised at the amount of opportunities they had there. She got her associates degree after three years and moved on to University of California Riverside. She originally went for religious studies, but ended up taking all English courses instead. She graduated from Riverside with her bachelor’s in English. From there, she went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for her master’s in English. In 2013, she graduated from Drew University with her Masters of Fine Arts in poetry. …show more content…

Sheridan had a number of different fields she was interested in when she started community college. She wanted to be a philosophy major, a religious studies major, an art history major, and even a geology major at one point. She explained that she ended up in English by chance.     A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offer programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income over someone who does not have a degree. College is more of life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers are attending college for job preparation. They talked about how their college could make a leap from being good to being great. The University of Louisiana, Lafayette, is eliminating its philosophy major, while Michigan State University is doing away with American studies and classics, after years of decline in enrollments in those majors (Zernike).
