This essay will be focusing on the reflection of group work that was completed. “A reflective practice is a dynamic process which requires a cynical approach” Chong (2009). According to Wilding (2008) Reflection is an important skill to require in the area of nursing. The purpose of the group work was to create a PowerPoint and a piktochart for a particular topic, in this case it was focusing on mental illness in adolescents and children. Using Gibbs’ (1988) model of reflection, I will be discussing each step of the model in depth. These steps include; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan. The positive aspects included; that my partner and I were geographically close so we were able to meet up and collect information for the project. I also get along with my partner really well outside of the group work as we are great friends. My contribution in the group was to complete the power point and collecting the data for questions three, four and five. Adding my information into the power point and providing those finds to my partner who was completing the piktochart as we had a limited amount of time. She provided the information for question one and two as well as locating a relevant video. She had sent me the information for her question so that I was able to incorporate it into the power point presentation. However, as well as good aspects there some negative aspects. The only negative aspect was communication. I feel that my communication style may have cause a bit of frustration between my partner and i. I can be confrontational when frustrated which I believe is something I need to fix in order to be less confrontational. My partner didn’t have much influence on me As a result of completing this assessment task as part of a group. I have learnt that I need to slightly alter how I communicate and that I should read people’s emotions a lot more, in particularly when confronting. That how I approach a situation shouldn’t be as confrontational as not everyone has the same style of communication as

My reflection was on a group book club which started with going to meet Dina Told, at her home in a living room. Dina helps teach reading and comprehension to children. The project took off as a summer camp in her yard’s gazebo. When it starts getting cold the group goes inside her house. The group sessions changed every month from house to house of members only. Sometimes the group meets at the library, bookstores, and parks. The observation was performed with the approval of each child’s parent that only asked to change their child’s names upon doing this study.

Groupthink is the psychological phenomenon in which groups working on a task think along the same lines which could have drastic results. It is the result of group polarization where discussions are enhance or exaggerate the initial leanings of the group. Therefore, if a group leans towards risky situation at the beginning of the discussion on average they will move toward an even riskier position. (Marks, 2015). After completing the group task of preparing a presentation on, transferring individual facilitation skills into a group work setting I will critically reflect upon my own participation. I will evaluate my self-awareness while working in the group, as well as those around me. The way that I personally dealt with any issues that arose within the group and how that affected the group dynamics. I will also briefly discuss the roles in which each member of the group took and how role allocation affected, the group dynamics and the working relationships. It is very important to understand that in everyday communication we are either the speaker or listener and it’s important that we do those jobs as best we can in order to have a healthy communication relationship. This activity was very useful because I got to reflect on my past successes and failures in my communicating strategies and in doing so I can improve and adapt to become a better communicator and listener. We do have policies and procedures, which reflect the vision and strategic direction of the team. Social group work is an integral part of the effective functioning of social service agencies and by extension provides practice that becomes invaluable to every social worker (UWI Open Campus, 2014). Social workers, through group work, are able to assist individual members by indenting of the collective strengths of other members in the helping and supporting process of all concerned. This paper will seek to highlight the importance and some advantages and disadvantages of group work, along with group dynamics, with direct focus on the Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI), which is a mental health rehabilitation agency. CUMI partners with the regional psychiatric department, community clinics, mental health officers and other health professionals who provide the foundation for mental health care. This facility is situated in Montego Bay, Jamaica and provides a rehabilitation day centre programme which focuses on the re-structuring of the individuals lives via daily activities inclusive of group work, which is aimed at helping these persons in learning how to cope with managing their mental health challenges (CUMI, n.d).
In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice.
