Fast forward a few years and I am now 20 working at a big chain restaurant taking on my first job. I was excited and motivated to earn my own money and become a responsible adult without realizing that it comes with many issues. In this case the issue was communication between management and myself. I would voice my concerns such as being understaffed or that my breaks were being violated because of such a high volume of customers coming to eat. I admit that I should have voiced my concerns a better way, but I learned what not to do at my first job. I would be incongruent with my feelings and actions just as my manager would and so we would be unsure of the ambiguity of the statements. My manager would be evaluative on my performances and that would upset me since I would feel as if I was given an impossible expectation. I believe that my managers used a coaching strategy instead of a counseling which would have been the better choice. Counseling would have been the better choice because most of the factors impeding the restaurant performance were emotional factors. Emotional factors is a sign that a counseling approach should be used. I, of course experienced both obstacles of communication which are defensiveness and disconfirmation. It is very important to understand that in everyday communication we are either the speaker or listener and it’s important that we do those jobs as best we can in order to have a healthy communication relationship. This activity was very useful because I got to reflect on my past successes and failures in my communicating strategies and in doing so I can improve and adapt to become a better communicator and listener. I believe that this assignment is very useful because it is real life experiences that may occur again and I can better assess the situation and use the appropriate communicating strategy necessary. The process of communication is brought into existence by a two-way channel, as there's one who listens (the receiver) the opposite talks (the sender). The prerequisite for a healthy communicative relationship starts with the ability to interact in a context of support, valuing, and within barrier limits of impartiality. When horrific crimes occur in large cities, many of them can be chalked up to gang violence or to the larger population of that specific city. But when horrific crimes happen in small cities like Lincoln, Nebraska, people begin to ask questions like who did this and why. In 1958, a nineteen year old man named Charles Starkweather put the entire state of Nebraska and possibly the entire nation in a state of terror. With his murder spree taking only three days, Starkweather had collected a body count of ten bodies, including two teenagers and a young child. Understanding Starkweather’s past and state of mind begins to answer the second question of why.
Nearly every aspect of law enforcement has a court decision that governs criteria. Most court rulings are the result of civil lawsuit towards a police officer and agency. However, currently, there is no law that mandates law enforcement driver training. When it comes to firearms, negligence by officers has resulted in a multitude of court rulings. Popow v. City of Margate, 1979, is a particularly interesting case that outlines failed firearms training by an agency. In this case, an officer chasing a suspect during a foot pursuit fired at the suspect, striking and killing an innocent bystander (Justia.com, 2017). The court ruled that the agency was “grossly negligent” of “failure to train” (Justia.com, 2017). As a result, nearly every agency requires annual firearms training and has written policy concerning the same. I earned a spot on varsity. Being on varsity gave me my first taste of truly competitive tennis. Usually during practices, we would be separated from the other girls not on varsity, and our coach would run special drills with us. Tennis is an energy demanding sport. Matches usually started around 8, although sometimes I had to wake up at 4 because of a long drive, and depending on how many teams were at the tournament, could end late in the evening, one day we didn’t finish until around 9pm. By this time in my tennis career, I knew all the rules of tennis inside and out. I would frequently help the players on the team newer to the sport with scoring, knowing where to stand to serve, and what grips to hold their rackets in. Personal coaching as defined by Biswas – Diener (2009) is a professional relationship in which coaches work with clients to facilitate experiential learning and improve functioning and performance, of in the context of working toward specific goals. Some core assumptions that people have an innate capacity to grow and develop a focus on mutually agreed upon goals, and an understanding that the relationship is relatively equal and collaborative as stated by the author (2009). Some techniques that are in seen during a coaching process include but are not limited to the following list as provided by the author: active listening, the use of powerful questions which are based on broad and open-ended to raise awareness of the client to take stock of their values and resources, cognitive tools are used to reframe negative interpretations, use different types of encouragement tools, and that clients are held accountable (2009). The topics that will be discussed in this paper include what skills do I current have, which skills need to be develop, my comfort level and effectiveness, coaching approaches (including methods and tools), any challenges about coaching and finally how coaching relates to my professional career.
Disputes are almost unavoidable between people when there are disagreements or misunderstandings. In the construction industry, contractual relationships could lead to dispute. To resolve disputes, construction disputes are most likely encouraged to use Alternative Dispute Resolutions such as arbitration, mediation, and mini-trials to resolve their disputes faster and keep the dispute confidential and at lower cost (Ray, 2000). The construction case presented in this paper first resorted to negotiation; however, it could not give the parties a resolution which led to a mini-trial.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
A vital aspect of interpersonal communication is the style in which one listens. While every individual possesses their own preferred method of listening in communication, it can be enlightening to analyze our own strengths and weaknesses so as to maximize effectual communication. One of the main aspects in communicating is listening. An effective listener is one who, not only comprehends how the speaker feels but, also understands what they are stating. Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas.
