Coordinated Management of Meaning
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
Explanation of theory
In the late 1970's, W. Barnett Pearce and Vernon Cronen introduced their theory of Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM). Their primary findings indicated that talk creates the social environment in which we participate. Prior to Pearce and Cronen, the common method of observing communication was through a transmissional view. This taught theorists and scholars to focus on the pieces of conversation while ignoring the overall effect of the interaction. CMM theory examines interactions from a participants point of view, and is able to get a feel for the interaction as a whole through this process. Outside observation does lead to learning about the interaction, but participating in the interaction leads to more in depth study of communication patterns.
CMM theory relies on three basic processes in interactions. A participant consciously or unconsciously experiences coherence, coordination, and mystery. Each step further clarifies and explains how we create social realities when we engage in conversation. The first step, coherence, describes how meaning is achieved in conversation. Each time we ente...

Above all, Coordinated Meaning of Management is a useful theory when examining communication interactions. It focuses its central themes on the ritual of communication and the part it plays in defining our world. Unfortunately, CMM has an abundance of terms to relay the same basic message. Aside from the terminology, CMM provides a different scope to view real life situations, even one as stressful as meeting a boyfriend or girlfriend's parents!

Miscommunication is a struggle that lives within the world everyday. Being able to understand what another person is trying to convey is an essential part of the way humans interact with one another. When a message is not translated correctly from person to person conflict arises and heated battles rage within a relationship; whether it is a mother and daughter, or two quarreling lovers, or strangers upon the street. All humans are created differently, with diverse upbringings, perspectives, and mindsets. Particular forms of communications may mean different things to various people. When talking about the concept of miscommunications, one must also address the concept of communication itself.

CMM is a theory founded by Barnett Pearce and Vernon Cronen who both believe that the process of communication creates our social worlds. Pearce and Cronen, taken from Harre, emphasize that at the heart of CMM are persons-in-conversations who “co-construct their own social realities and are simultaneously shaped by the worlds they create” (Griffin, 2012, p. 70). The theory allows for the deciphering of the processes and patterns within communication. By doing so, steps can be taken to improve communication and understand the benefits and hindrances of certain techniques.
Conversation Analysis (CA) is the study of talk-within-interaction that attempts to describe the orderliness, structure and sequential patterns of interaction in conversation. It is a method of qualitative analysis developed by Harvey Sacks with the aid of Emmanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Using the CA frame of mind to view stories shows us that what we may think to be simplistic relaying of information or entertaining our friends is in fact a highly organised social phenomena that is finely tuned in a way that expresses the teller’s motivation behind the talk. (Hutchby & Wooffitt, 2011). It is suggested that CA relies on three main assumptions; talk is a form of social action, action is structurally organised, talk creates and maintains inter-subjectivity (Atkinson & Heritage, 1984).
The most important reason that the parents would force their children to receive the early education may be enhancing the academic result in the children’s later study, especially in the reading and writing skills (Heckman, 2011). Barnett (2001) states the preschool education scheme is highly associated with the reading and writing aptitudes, which enhances the language proficiency for future ...
Exposing someone to violent video games will train the person for doing violent actions that are shown in violent games. Grossman is a writer of two books on video game violence and thinks that video game is a major cause for violent teen behavior. On 1997 in a Paducah, Kentucky high school shoot out a 14 year boy shot eight people and five where headshots. This was believed to be a effect of the teen playing first person shooter games. The FBI say that trained law enforcement officers only land one out of five shots and this boy had no past experience shooting except for in the game. “Exposing children and adolescents (or "youth") to violent visual media increases the likelihood that they will engage in physical aggression against another person,” said expert Craig A. Anderson. Exposure to violent video games can cause a child to learn the...
Video games are often criticized for their negative, and often violent effects on those who play them. While there is evidence that playing violent video games increases aggressive behavior, findings have been mixed regarding the effects of
At preschool, they become exposed to numbers, letters, and shapes. And, more important, they learn how to socialize -- get along with other children, share, contribute to circle time."
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory states that communicating with others allows us to develop our own social worlds. This means that whenever people are in conversations with others create realities that are based on the things that have been a part of. People have their own thoughts on what the world around them is like. CMM is stated as a practical theory.
Children who participate in preschool education have more advanced skills in areas such as following directions, problem solving, and joining activities which allows kindergarten teachers more time to work directly with children and less time on classroom management
Early childhood education plays a key role in a child’s academic development because he or she learns soft skills, job skills, and develop positive traits. Preschool is not like kindergarten, but instead a stepping-stone that prepares young students for the years of schooling they will have later in life. As more schools began to open families wanted to be able to verify that programs would benefit and protect their children. In response, the National Association for the Education of Young Children was made to help families find the best care for their children, by providing the early childhood educators with training and ensuring the quality of children’s daily experiences. Playing video games has become an increasingly popular hobby in the United States of America. Even though it has become more popular and successful, playing video games also carries a negative stigma with it. Some people associate it with laziness, wasting of time, or nerdy. Some go even further and say that violent video games cause aggression or even violent behaviors. When a major catastrophe like the Virginia Tech shooting or the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School occurs, the media are quick to jump to a cause for it, and they often link the shooter's behavior with a violent video game as a scapegoat (Markey, 2014). In those two cases where the violent video games were blamed for the cause of the shootings, the perpetrator either did not even play the game they blamed,
Recent studies have revealed the benefits and long-term effects of early-childhood education. Between the social interaction, discipline, and the development from an academic setting, there are countless benefits to early childhood education. However, this is not accessible to everyone due to lack of educators, financial resources, or being uninformed of its importance. Preschool should be provided to all families because the preschool age is when majority of brain development occurs. The objective of this paper is to prove that preschool should be accessible to all families because of the developmental benefits, opportunity it provides to children in poverty, and long-term benefits to society.
