Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Mattie is constantly talking about a person having “true grit” throughout the book. Her definition of having true grit isn’t being courageous and she isn’t referring to dirt. Having true grit to Mattie means having a rough side and being fearless. After Mattie’s father was murdered she was determined to avenge her father’s death at any cost. Before Mattie could go out and search for the man who killed her father she needed to attend to some of her father’s business. She needed to talk to man named Stonehill about some ponies that her father had purchased right before he was killed. In this scene of the book Mattie shows her grit because Stonehill didn’t want to buy the ponies back and Mattie showed her persistence and her abrasiveness. Eventually Mattie says that she was going to get her lawyer involved and he offered her two hundred dollars but she didn’t take it. Mattie’s wanted three hundred and fifty for the ponies but she told Stonehill that she would settle for three hundred and twenty-five. Are you fearless, brave, and double tough? You might have what it takes to be “True Grit” but only if you can be compassionate and sensitive at the same time. The Marriam-Webster their definition is mental toughness and courage. In the book True Grit by Charles Portis, Mattie Ross is a four-teen year old girl who sets off to find and kill Tom Chaney for the murder and robbing of her father. She hires a Marshal Rooster Cogburn who agrees to find and kill him for a price of 50 dollars. Before they leave Mattie meets a man named LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger set out on the mission of capturing Tom Chaney for the murder of the Senator and his dog. Mattie Ross doesn’t want his help, she knows that LaBoeuf will try to take him back to Texas and have him hung, but that’s not what she wants she wants him to be responsible for her father’s death and be killed on the spot or hung in her town. Rooster Cogburn is the definition of “True Grit” opposed to Tom Chaney the coward that kills an unarmed man and robs him. He lacks every trait that “Grit” is supposed to be. Mattie Ross is a coin toss of “True Grit” and not having “Grit” sometimes it seems as if she does have it bun then her four-teen year old side shows that she really is just a young girl.
An epitaph is a poem or short story that is dedicated to someone who is deceased. Edgar Lee Masters’ collection of poems located in the book Spoon River Anthology contains over a hundred epitaphs. Each of these poems is named after a person, but only five poems are named after actual people. Masters would take some names from the constitutions and state papers of Illinois and for other names, he would choose a first name from one person and a surname from another. The American western frontier, still arguably existent today, has presented a standard of living and characteristics which, for a time, where all its own. Several authors of various works regarding these characteristics and the obvious border set up along the western and eastern sections have discussed their opinions of the west. In addition to these literary works by renowned authors, one rather convenient cinematic reference has also been influenced by these well-known, well-discussed practices of this American frontier. “True Grit”, a film recently remade in 2010 by the Cohen Brothers, crosses the boundaries of the west allowing all movie-goers to capture one idea of the western world. The movie, along with a few scholarly sources which will also be discussed offer a more ideal glimpse into the past of the western lands. The true nature of the west, both refuted and supported, is characterized well through the author’s dictation as well as the Hollywood interpretation introducing the land’s distinction between savagery vs. civilization, law vs. chaos, and loyalty vs. independence.
Resiliency is one concept that has never been the human races forte. Many things that happen in our current day and age require a great deal of perseverance and resiliency. People often will give in to the problems in their lives and learn to accept them, instead of persevering through them and working out the issues. The fact of the matter is, if you learn to persevere through problems, your life will be a lot more happy and pleasant to live. In Tennessee Williams’ play, “ A Streetcar Named Desire” suggests that you cannot give up on issues; you must be resilient to those issues and persevere to be happy.

In her book, she talks about grit, “a combination of passion and perseverance in the pursuit of a long term goal”. It is not irrational to accept the fact that inner capability does not guarantee success. Undoubtedly natural talent significantly lights one’s path, however, the fuel to the engine of triumph is tolerance, consistency, and hard work.
